Olive Us Launch! Episode 1: Gardening

It’s here! Olive Us has officially launched. Tiger in a Jar — the amazing video crew who put this together — has been working round the clock to finish up the edits. And I’m crazy excited about how it turned out! I hope you are too. : ) I can’t wait to hear what you think of it.

Things you can do to join in the fun:

– Watch our pilot episode. It’s called Garden Day. It was made with love!

– Check out the new Olive Us website. You can find out more about the show there, including FAQs and bios of the kids. There’s even a video of Ben Blair talking about the aims of the series.

Subscribe to Olive Us! We’ll be sharing new videos every week and we don’t want you to miss out.

– Tell your friends. We’d love help getting the word out about Olive Us. If you like what you see, feel free to share the videos on Facebook or your own blog or wherever you like to share things.

We hope you enjoy the first episode. A huge thanks to Pottery Barn Kids for being the sponsor — they’ve been so fun to work with, and their faith in the idea made the series a possibility.

P.S. — Oscar made up the song at the end on the video. Hah!

Source List

I worked hard on the props and styling for each shot. From glimpses of the series on Instagram and the teaser videos, I’ve already been getting questions about some of the objects and clothes in the videos. So I’ll plan on including a source list for every episode. Here’s the first one! Since Pottery Barn Kids is the awesome sponsor for this episode, we sourced as much as we could from them. Anything not on the list, is from our personal collection or belongs to the homeowners here at La Cressonnière.

Gardening Props & Equipment

Tiny wheelbarrow, gardening gloves, kid-size potting table, flower seed tins, birdhouse, red lantern, chalkboard plant labels, butterfly nets — all from Pottery Barn Kids.

Twine, red hand rake, kid size rake & shovel, and pale blue watering can are from Intermarché.

Wardrobe

June’s gingham dress is from Kayce Hughes.

Betty’s gingham skirt, Betty’s red sweater, and Oscar’s red polo are from Olive Juice Kids.

Betty’s boots, Oscar’s plaid button down, Maude’s red stripe hoodie and Olive’s navy print hoodie are from Polarn O. Pyret.

Ralph’s green jacket and June’s chambray jacket are from Zara Kids.

June’s heart print hoodie is from HEMA.

Red and yellow wellies by Hunter.

  1. Eeek, Gabrielle!
So cute and awesome. Your kids are seriously a breath of fresh air. Their inquisitive, intelligent, and kind natures, totally unique personalities, the lovely way the are with each other, plus last but not least, their beautiful faces! Too much.
Congrats to all of you! Can’t wait to watch each episode as you make them! xx

  2. What a lovely family! I am a mother of 4 and found this inspiring. My 6 year old is all into flowers and gardening. Now I can’t wait to get them all involved together. Thank you so much for sharing!

  3. Very cool! Congrats. Nice production value: professional while still feeling loose and impromptu. Look forward to another episode. I just became aware of your site, as a new stay-at-home dad who’s also a designer. You have some great stuff on here. Btw, my wife is a high school French teacher and is EXTREMELY jealous of your house in the French countryside.

  4. I have to discipline myself to not spend the day with repeated watchings!
LOVE everything about it! Thanks millions! Love y’all!!

  5. What a wonderful project! Your children did a great job, and I really like the series’ goal of highlighting positive relationships between siblings. I’m still waiting for your post on developing time-management skills. :-)

  6. We loved the video! My 3 year old enjoyed watching it and seeing your children. She wanted to know their names and ages and all about them. I’m looking forward to watching more with her. Thanks for doing this project. It is wonderful to see siblings getting along and living peacefully together. I’m sure you all have your days but you can see they genuinely love each other. I want to instill the same relationships for my kiddos. Thanks, Gabrielle, Ben, and team! Keep ’em coming!

  7. What a lovely episode! It’s amazing how much work can go into what becomes minutes of video. I recognize the kids from Jordan’s Instagram photos in Paris, kind of cool!

  8. This is so amazing. My grand daughters are ages 8 and 10. My daughter in law has been planting gardens with them since they were 2 and 4. Wish I could share some of the pictures of vegetables they have grown over the years. I thought it was a great idea then and I still do. This is great.

  9. What fun! My nearly-three-year-old LOVES it. He keeps asking to watch the kids with the rakes and the gloves and the boots. Until I showed it to him and saw his reaction, I had no idea how perfect this concept was. Great job!

  10. Loved it! I can’t wait to show it to my kids, especially my 5-yr old who is just learning about plants in school. Can’t wait for the next one!

  11. This is just ridiculously charming. I love it so much. Olive stole the show for me when she said you have to give the seed some love. Can’t wait for the next episode.

  12. You are such an inspiration! I’m already subscribed to future episodes of Olive Us. My 10-month old actually sat on my lap and watched the whole video. He heard happy voices and had to see what was up! :) He and I will be gardening with his Nana next week, so the video has gotten me psyched to start.

  13. What a wonderful first episode! Congratulations, Gabrielle–it’s beautiful and inspiring and heart-warming all at the same time. Ben Blair’s introductory video was great, too–it really has me thinking about sibling relationships and family collaborations. For the first time in my life (seriously), it actually made me think: “hmmm, may be we could have more than three children.” Of course, only if we could move the whole family to France, too;). Ha! I can’t wait to see the next episode.

  14. I loved it and cannot wait to show my kids… and then i guess we’re going to have to plant a little garden ourselves. Beautiful film, styling, music… and a charming cast! Looking forward to the next installment!

  15. I’m hooked!! What a beautiful project! Makes me long for the days when our six children were all under our roof! Not that we don’t ADORE our 8 grandchildren !
So little of today’s media portrays beautiful normal family life …Hooray for you and THANKS for sharing!

  16. Amazing and I love the video!!!! Love seeing the children all working together and having fun doing what they think is a chore. Also love seeing the good old fashioned way of relationship building among them through working together. Awesome!!!!!

    Lee Ann

  17. Absolutely and utterly charming.
I’m inspired by your goals to look at sibling relationships. It is a value of ours, but we’ve not been particularly successful. We will keep trying though.

  18. Oh gee, I have not been online much this week so I COMPLETELY missed all the wonderful tweets and buzz about this. It is soooooooo wonderful Miss Gabby!!!! All of your children are so lovely. As someone who had one younger brother, who I always got along with really well, I LOVE seeing happy siblings. Brava!!! Also, sweet Olive is amazing….what a cool project for her.

I can’t wait to see more. But mostly it makes me wish I lived next door so we could share a cup of coffee while all the kids ran around outside.
    : )

  19. Pure delight! Thank you to everyone involved with this production, especially the children, for adding smiles and laughter to my day. Great work!

  20. I’ve been a fan for at least five years and have recommended this site many times but… the video was just ok. Like a home movie for a grandparent to watch. If that is what you are aiming for great but it really isn’t interesting or able to keep my attention. Are you just trying for product placement?

  21. @Mary Kay, I guess you are entitled to your opinion, but I’m happy to see from all of the other reader comments that you might be alone in this (kinda mean) sentiment!

It’s plain to see that this project is about so much more than “product placement” – it has clearly brought much fun to all of the family members involved, and much joy to all of the friends and even strangers who have watched it! Definitely not just for grandparents to enjoy!

TOTALLY interesting and kept my attention! Am going to watch it again now! :)

  22. Sad that I couldn’t watch this on my tablet; it kept freezing up. The ads kept flashing, so I am not sure what happened.

  23. Ah, I LOVE this! It’s so inspiring. And so honest. And makes me hope for all the best things for my family. I can’t wait to watch it again with my girls.

  24. brilliantly creative and what a treasure! for your family and viewers. I love how it captures the essence of childhood- working and having fun together which everyone could use more of as a family! love it. x

  25. “big pokey ouchie weeds”… LOL… living on a farm with blackberries I can testify to that! By the way, I know this is an older post, but I found it while looking for blog articles on gardening to link up to mine about keeping the core safe and strong while working in the garden. I live on 7 acres with goats, chickens, and lots of berry bushes including blues and razzes. Gardening is always an adventure around here, and weeding is for sure a workout. My apple watch is even convinced it’s cardio, so I count it :P
