Remember the Girls’ Bedroom? Notice anything new? I’ll give you a hint: look at the windows. We added Roman Shades from Barn & Willow — and they turned out so beautifully!
If you haven’t heard of Barn & Willow, it’s probably because they are a start-up company that’s pretty new on the scene — I only heard about them for the first time about a year ago.
The company was created with the idea that there should be a much simpler way to buy high-quality, custom curtains and shades that don’t cost a fortune. In fact their tagline is: Custom made window coverings, made easy.
If that is their goal, then I say mission accomplished! I ordered Roman Shades. They offer four styles: Flat, Cascade, Relaxed, and Pleated — I went with Pleated. And they are not joking about making things easy.
If you’re interested in window coverings, the first thing they’ll do is send a book of swatches.
Barn & Willow has an exclusive selection of fabrics. They pride themselves on choosing only the finest options from the finest mills. They keep the options limited to just the very best — so you won’t get overwhelmed with a whole bunch of sub-par selections.
When the swatches arrived in the mail, I narrowed it down to these three grey offerings, and ultimately went with FOG (the one on the left). It complements the deep charcoal color on the back wall so well, and it’s made of 100% organic cotton. I love the color and the texture.
We also chose a lining. Barn & Willow offers a blackout lining option, and a privacy lining option. We went with privacy — the kids are used to light filtering in each morning and we didn’t want to eliminate that.
After you decide your fabric and style (do you want drapes or roman shades?), the next step is using their Easy Measurement Finder. And you can go as full-on exact as you’d like. Which means, if you have an older house, or older windows, and each window now measures slightly different as they’ve aged (raising my hand!), you can get shades that fit exactly right.
On the window pictured above, we needed 3 separate shades. These were the measurements I ordered:
34.13″W x 34.63″L
54.38″W x 34.88″L
34.25″W x 34.38″L
See what I mean by exact?
When they arrived, they were carefully packaged, carefully labeled, and the fit of the blinds in each window was perfection. Like butter I tell you.
Plus, guess how long it took? Ten days. That’s it. Their policy is 10-day delivery from the day you place your order. That’s super fast for such specific custom orders! Especially when you consider the average delivery time in this industry is three weeks plus.
If you’re feeling stuck, and not sure what to order, Barn & Willow also offers one-on-one help from their design experts. Should you install above the window? Within the frame? What’s the appropriate length for drapes? Which shade style would look best in your home? Looking for the best girls bedroom ideas for your family?
Those kinds of questions can be intimidating! Especially when you’re talking about a custom order that you really want to get right. So it’s wonderful to be able to reach out to their experts directly and get the answers you need.
Don’t laugh but this is the only room in the house that has window coverings. Our house is in such an unusual and private spot, that we mostly don’t need them. But the Girls’ Bedroom is near our front walkway, and lately we’ve had deliveries that come right to our front door, and right past their bedroom windows. So we decided it was definitely time for window coverings. : )
We really didn’t want to have to change things up too much in the space because it functions so beautifully as it is. Happily, we were able to find a perfect option through Barn & Willow without having to redesign or reconfigure the room.
I’m so pleased with how these Barn & Willow shades turned out! I think they add a wonderful new element to the space and hope these girls bedroom ideas will inspire you.
Your turn. How have you handled window coverings at your house? Did your home have window coverings already installed when you moved in? Or did you have to order them? Do you favor drapes or shades or blinds or shutters or something else entirely? If you could go without window coverings, would you want to? For you, is the priority with your window coverings privacy? Or light control? Or style? Or maybe all three equally? I don’t know if we’ve ever talked much about window coverings and I’d love to hear your thoughts.
