If you’ve been a Sesame Street fan from the very beginning, you might get a special kick out of this picture of the original cast, taken all the way back in 1969. Even more fascinating is this clip of the first fifteen minutes of the first episode:

Do you feel nostalgic towards your favorite childhood cartoons or tv shows? Whenever I hear the music from Today’s Special or The Point, I’m overwhelmed with memories. I know my mom thinks of her mom every time she hears the I Love Lucy theme song and one of my sisters still watches and loves Little House on the Prairie. Do you or your kids have a favorite children’s show now?

  1. Wow, what a wave of nostalgia I just felt! In fact, each of those shows you mentioned gave me a pause and evoked a particular feeling. So crazy how TV shows have the power to do that. I actually watched the whole Sesame Street clip- such a great show to have grown up with :)

    Thanks for this post!

  2. Love Sesame Street — I have so many great memories of it! I know I will have to share episodes of it with Little Miss when she gets a little bit older. Being Canadian, I also love a show called The Polka Dot Door and of course, Mr. Rogers.
I recently started downloading music that I used to listen to as a child as well, for Little Miss. It’s great to share these moments with her!!

  3. I never really watched Sesame Street as a kid, and my kids haven’t either. I know I watched Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood and PeeWee’s Playhouse. I feel the most nostalgia for shows I used to watch with my younger sister… Hey Arnold, The Angry Beavers, and Wishbone.

My girls love Max & Ruby and ask to watch it all. day. long.

  4. Oh my Mom is still so obsessed with Little House on the Prairie, and secretly, I am as well. Nothing makes me nostalgic like seeing hand drawn cartoons from Nick that I used to watch as a kid, and nothing makes me feel old (even though I’m only 23…..) like babysitting kids and see how awful most of the kids shows are today!

    1. I love that, Emily! I stumbled onto a Little House on the Prairie marathon on vacation last week, and even though it was beachy and beautiful outside, I had to curl up and enjoy it.

  5. My girls love Little House on the Prairie and the Waltons, but their absolute favorite is The Donny and Marie show. We have a four episode DVD and they ask to watch it all the time! I have lots of memories being a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll with my sister. Now my girls are creating their own variety show memories…just wish there was more like this on t.v. (and that I could find more Donny and Marie episodes)

When I was three my mom sat me down and said there was a new kids’ show on t.v. I actually remember watching it on our black and white t.v. It made a huge impression on me. I remember watching it every day while eating an apple (to keep the doctor away). When my family would visit friends in Chicago I was convinced I was on Sesame Street- the neighborhoods looked just like it. Big memories for me.

  7. Did you know that there is a selection of classic episodes available on Netflix? I was searching for Sesame Street for my little girl and chose the classic version. It was so much fun! Guest stars like a young Bill Cosby, Lena Horne and Johnny Cash. Definitely worth checking out.

  8. Love it! So funny, my hubby and I often reminisce about Sesame Street and other childhood favs – we don’t let our daughter watch it at all though, it’s just changed too much!

      1. I agree, as well. The good programming of Sesame Street changed abruptly in the winter between 2001/2002. It used to captivate my toddler and sometimes I would watch with her and we would both laugh and laugh. But after 9/11 the producers wrote on the website that kids need something new to help them deal with difficult issues and the show got pretty dark. I am glad to see so many others loved classic Sesame Street!
