If I had to guess, I’d estimate that most Design Mom Readers have some form of life insurance. It’s a pretty easy guess, because a common life event that triggers a need to purchase life insurance is having a baby.

No surprise, right?

For those of you who are already parents, do you remember leaving your baby for the first time? Maybe for a date with your spouse? And having that sudden realization that if anything happens to the two of you while you’re out — a car wreck, or some freak accident at the movie theater — your child will suddenly be an orphan? It’s terrifying. I still remember the waves of fear from our first outing all these years later.

If your spouse is the lone breadwinner, you might feel that anxiety daily. You send them off to work and think, “If something happens to them, how will we survive?” It can be totally overwhelming.

I don’t know about you, but for me, as soon as we bought life insurance for the first time — back when there was just little baby Ralph — 99% of those fears instantly disappeared.

I’m not exaggerating at all. Putting a life insurance policy in place truly brought calm to my head and my heart. It means I could say to myself, “Well, the worst case scenario has been accounted for.” It allowed me to check something pretty major off my emotional and mental responsibility list, and it gave me reassurance that I’m doing a decent job at this parenting gig.

So yes, we have life insurance.

Well, sort of.

I mean we have the policy I mentioned above, the one we first got 19 years ago. A policy that has not been updated at all since then and that I only vaguely know the details of. Over the years we’ve sometimes had additional life insurance through our employers, but since we’ve mostly been self-employed, it hasn’t been consistent at all. I should also note, that with employer-provided life insurance, you’re usually underinsured (with only 1 to 2 times your salary) and you lose usually the coverage when you leave your job.

I KNOW I need to purchase more coverage. I don’t need any lectures on this, I promise. It has been on my to- do list for ages, because we’ve added 5 more children and have a larger income now, which means we’re in need of more coverage to help financially protect our family.

If you have children, you probably need life insurance. And, if you’re like us, and bought a policy years and years ago and have had more kids or your financial situation has changed at all, then it’s important to revisit your coverage needs. And I’m not talking about coverage for just one spouse. Both parents should have coverage — even if you don’t technically earn a salary.

But buying a policy is such a pain in the neck! I have put it off, and then put it off again. And then put it off one more time. Until we’ve gone way beyond the point of ridiculous. I’m talking years.

Well, it turns out the CEO of Haven Life can relate. A few years ago, he and his wife had just had their first child, and needed life insurance coverage. He went to buy a policy and found the process to be totally antiquated. The whole ordeal included several weeks to get a decision on coverage, with lots of paperwork and back and forth conversations over phone, email and even fax.

He knew he could figure out a way to do it better, so he created Haven Life — a convenient, efficient, modern and affordable way to buy quality life insurance online. They put the focus on prioritizing both your loved ones and your time, the two things we all care about most. With Haven Life, you can apply online for a policy in minutes and, if approved, start coverage immediately.

Turns out his idea was a good one. Haven Life is only two years old but has expanded quickly. They’re now in every state except Montana and California — and I’ve been told they’re coming soon.

Getting insured by a young startup might sound risky because who knows if they’ll be around in 30 years? Well, Haven Life is backed and wholly owned by MassMutual, a Fortune 100 company with over 160 years experience and a long history of financial strength.

Go spend a few minutes on their site and you’ll see how quick and easy (dare I say fun?) the whole thing is. You can use their life insurance calculator to get an idea of how much coverage you might need, get an instant life insurance quote, compare your quote to other top rated insurers, use their helpful live chat option to ask questions, submit your application online (it only takes a few minutes),find out the decision immediately, and, if approved, start coverage today. As you can see, they’ve pretty much proactively addressed any possible excuse you might have had to procrastinate.

Haven Life offers up to $1,000,000 in affordable, easy-to-understand term life coverage for adults up to the age of 65. And if you’re under 45, it can be especially easy to apply, because last fall, they introduced the InstantTerm process — it allows some qualified, healthy applicants (between the ages of 18-45) to purchase up to $1 million in fully underwritten term life insurance without the need for a medical exam (and without having to pay more for the convenience.)

And the rates are really competitive. For example, I used my old New York zip code to do some exploring on the site (I needed to use NY, because they’re not quite available in CA yet). I got an instant free quote and to get a $1 million policy for 20 years at just $60.17 per month.

Even though I wasn’t able to apply yet, I can already tell that Haven Life has gone to great lengths to make sure the customer feels they are in control at every step of the way. The process makes perfect sense, the jargon is kept to a minimum and nothing is scary or intimidating. You’ll feel more relaxed and confident, knowing that your coverage is affordable and reliable. You’ll feel proud and responsible that you took steps to take care of your family.

The team at Haven Life is dedicated to improving their product regularly, and already, they’re changing the perception of life insurance — their communications are genuine and understandable, their products focus on affordability and efficiency, and their customer service is lovely. Plus, they won’t upsell you because. there’s nothing to upsell.

Sometimes, when a company reaches out to work with Design Mom, it feels like such a gift. This is one of those times. The need to get an updated life insurance policy has been weighing on me heavily for a long time. Then I learned about Haven Life, got that instant quote, realized how easy they make things, and felt the heavy burden lifting immediately. I now have an easy way to check “buying more life insurance” off my to-do list. Once they’re in California, of course.

If you’re feeling the uneasiness too, know that you’re not alone. I think it weighs on parents everywhere. Definitely check out Haven Life, and find how much coverage you can get, and how low of a monthly payment you can get it for. I’m telling you, it’s a game changer. Spend a few minutes now, and you may find yourself applying for coverage over your next lunch break. Can’t you just feel the relief already?

And if you’re up for sharing, I’d love to hear your own experiences with life insurance. Has anyone else put off buying it for way too long (like me)? And when are you most grateful you have a policy in place? As for me, I think about our coverage every time Ben Blair boards a plane.

P.S. — I was thinking about photos for this post, and the first thing that came to mind was my kids (of course!). They’re the whole reason having life insurance is so important to me. I remembered this photo shoot we did last year in our backyard, and realized I’d never shared the photos. Such a fun shoot! The photographer was Kristen Loken.
