Rent The Life

By Gabrielle.

Have you ever dreamed of escaping your same old, same old and live like someone else for a while? (You’re not alone! I’ve been living in a farmhouse in France for the past three years!) Well, dreams come true. For a price.

If you could envision yourself as a lighthouse keeper eating all the lobsters in the Bay, the Rose Island Lighthouse might be for you. That would be one fantastic night light for your kids, right? Or if you want to completely unplug, try an Amish Immersion holiday. Craving a return to nature? A teepee and not much else in the way of conveniences — like bathrooms — is what you’ll find in New Hampshire. But for those of you who want a little more swagger in your summer, there’s this. Even P. Diddy would be jealous. (Is that what he’s called these days?)

Which one is tempting you?

  1. If i could live like someone else I would chose to live like you! Escaping to a cottage in the French countryside or maybe a small flat in London. Now that sounds amazing!

  2. I would really love to do a Tuscan farmhouse summer getaway with my family. From what I’ve read, this can be a very family friendly vacation, without all the typical “family” trappings that people tend to think of. I can’t think of anything more relaxing than fresh air, fresh food, and space to run and play. Bonus points for immersing ourselves in another culture.

  3. Wow, small world, I drive by the Rose Island Lighthouse every day. Have not had the pleasure of staying there but the island is beautiful!!!

  4. I would move to San Francisco and live in an old Victorian house. Oh my. How I loved North California when I was there. I live in Berlin now and I LOOVE that city too. But if I would leave everything behind and start new, it would be San Francisco. I met so many incredible happy people there that it seems unreal to me when I remember it. And I was a happy person as soon as I got there.

    1. San Francisco is such a special place! My father grew up in the Bay Area, so my family made many visits to our grandparents homes. It holds a bit of my heart!

  5. We up and moved to Barcelona, Spain last September. Moving abroad had been on our bucket list forever, and we decided after going back and forth for a few months to just do it–just put our stuff in storage and do it. The last ten months has been an extraordinary adventure, especially because we’ve done it together. We’ve hiked to old monasteries, explored Roman ruins, waxed meditative in old cathedrals and cloisters, wandered the halls of museums, tested beaches along the Mediterranean, and learned the gentle art of the two-cheek kiss. No, it’s not easy to cross a bucket-list item that big off your list. (I’m unsure whether some of my mother’s jewelry made it into storage . . .). But this year has taught us that the world is bigger, more varied, more beautiful, and more interesting than we ever imagined. And thanks to you, Gabrielle. The fact that you had done it as a family helped us seal the deal. Your family’s adventure was one of the factors that inspired us to begin ours. Funny how “renting the life” begets more of the same.

We’re heading back this summer, as I believe you are. It’ll be a tough transition, but we’re talking a lot lately with our kids (especially our teens!) about the ways in which it’ll be possible to see the places and spaces of home with new eyes.

    Besitos, one for each cheek.

    1. Becky! I can’t even tell you how happy your comment makes me. I’m so glad to hear about your adventure. Thank you for sharing! And best wishes for a smooth and easy transition back to the U.S.
