Olive Us: Episode 13: Pottery Lesson

By Gabrielle.

The latest Olive Us episode features a pottery lesson from Master Potter, Joe Bennion in his studio at Horseshoe Mountain Pottery.

Friends, I have to tell you what a treat it was to make this episode. Joe is simply a delight and we couldn’t believe how lucky we were to get to spend an afternoon with him.

I didn’t have my big camera with me that day, but I took about a million photos with my phone. The pottery is so beautiful! While we were in his shop, we picked out a pie plate to take home as a souvenir. I wish I could get to his shop right now! His pottery would be wonderful as holiday gifts.

If you’d like to see the kids’ finished pottery, Joe posted a photo of the fired pieces on his blog. We can’t wait to visit again next summer to pick up our pottery and spend more time in Joe’s shop.

P.S. — Joe’s wife makes the salve I’m so crazy about. Also, be sure to subscribe to the Olive Us Newsletter so you don’t miss out on any of the Olive Us fun!

  1. Pottery is my favorite! I need to get back into doing it. That was one of my favorite Valentine’s Day dates… my husband surprised me with a pottery lesson. :)

  2. Oscar. (shhhh, you’re my favorite). In one breath, pride for his little, baby sister. In the next, “mine was pretty much the best. The tallest and the best.” So hilarious and heartfelt.

  3. I have a few pieces by Joe Bennion! They are absolutely beautiful. My parents are huge fans and have dozens. Lucky kiddos who got to work with a master!

  4. I could smell and feel that marvelous stuff and I love the pottery! You all cleaned up so well afterwards. I know “Joe,, the potter” loved having you visit.

  5. What a fun episode! Can I just say that your children are absolutely adorable – the shot of each of them putting on their aprons-loved it!

  6. What an amazing experience for your kids to get to have a lesson from such a talented potter!! They are all so sweet, but I have to admit Betty totally stole my heart with her excitement in this one :).

  8. Wow! I *think* I took a pottery class from Joe Bennion many years ago at BYU. I think it was 1990? Is that possible? I LOVED that class. On the very first day, Bennion told us that we would pretty much spend the entire semester working on the wheel. It was wonderful.

  9. Pretty much the best … hilarious Oscar !
    Amaaazing … with Betty’s adorable voice !
    June’ s apron :))
    I love them all…

Special PS for Maud : Tu es très belle avec ce chignon ! :)

  10. One of my favorite memories is taking our yearly summer trip to Spring City to visit Joe. My mom had some work connection with going, we went to see his artwork!

We love Horseshoe Mt. Pottery, too. Every time any of the family come to Utah to visit, we make a trip to Spring City for pottery. Thanks for sharing your great video.
