Ready for some fall What to Wear to School photos? Can you believe I’ve been posting this series every school year since 2006? If you’ve been reading Design Mom for awhile, you’ve basically seen my kids grow up right before your eyes!
Come see what Olive (10th grade) and Oscar (7th grade) are wearing to school this year.
Middle School Outfits
Fall Middle School Outfit #1
Olive is wearing a vintage jumpsuit — a 16th birthday gift from her sister Maude (Maude found it at one of the many vintage clothing stores near the Berkeley campus). It’s probably the coolest thing in Olive’s closet. Fits her perfectly and she loves it. Olive picked up the sandals at Forever 21.
Oscar is wearing jeans, striped tee, and polka-dot button down — all from H&M Kids. Socks from H&M too. His shoes are black Converse.
Fall Middle School Outfit #2
Olive is wearing a Wendy’s t-shirt from Uniqlo (on clearance now!), black pants from Zara, checkerboard Vans, and a rad visor (no idea where it’s from). Black bandana from Amazon.
Oscar is wearing a striped tee from H&M, yellow shorts and denim jacket from Gapkids.
Fall Middle School Outfit #3
Olive is wearing a red cashmere turtleneck that used to belong to her Great-Grandma Rudi (my grandmother), vintage white Levis from a second hand store, and black boots (from Nordstrom Rack I think — they’re older and I can’t remember).
Oscar is wearing red jeans from Zara Kids, blue tee and sweater with wide stripes from H&M.
Fall Middle School Outfit #4
Olive is wearing a black shirt dress from Lou & Grey and red gogo boots from Amazon. The wool black beret was purchased back when we lived in Colorado — we gave all the kids black berets when we told them we were moving to France. : )
Oscar is wearing a band tee (The Who) from AllPosters.com, plus green jeans and a blue hoodie from Primary. (Do you know Primary? It’s relatively new, and focuses on high quality basics for kids in solid colors. Tees, jeans, hoodies, cardigans. It’s become one of my go to sources!) Black Vans on his feet.
And that’s it for Olive and Oscar! Next up: Betty and June in What to wear to 6th Grade and 2nd Grade.
Thoughts on these middle school outfits? Favorite pieces? Clothing sources I should know about? Where are your teens shopping these days? Do they go shopping with you or on their own? I’d love to hear!
We did back to school dates this year and I went out one-on-one with each child. We picked out a first day of school outfit, any other wardrobe essentials (like socks and underwear), and then stopped for fro yo or chocolates or whatever treat they were craving. Definitely one of our favorite traditions! And as the kids get into the teenage years, and do a lot of independent shopping, it’s one of the only times we end up shopping together. : )
P.S. — More what to wear to school posts. It’s fun to see how the trends (and the kids!) change over the years.
I love that Olive is into the retro look without looking weird or creepy. I feel like I looked like a hobo when I wrote retro in 10th grade!
Olive has such good fashion instincts. And now that she has a job, and can do more of her own shopping, she’s really having fun experimenting with different styles.
I live in the Bay Area too, curious which vintage shop the jumpsuit is from? It’s amazing!
You have a pretty awesome life, but I don’t think I’ve ever coveted anything about your life more than that jumpsuit. GIMMIE!! It’s amazeballs and looks fantastic on you Olive! I can’t believe how big your kids are getting and they both have great style.
Hahaha! I can’t wait to show this comment to Olive.
My daughter (8th grade) got a few pairs of floral leggings the day b4 school started for 3.50 each and they are adorable! Cheap plain j crew t shirts too (she still fits in kid sizes). My 10th grade son is suddenly into patagonia t shirts. Lots of gap slim khakis … I’ve got skinny kids!
Thanks for the heads up! I noticed Old Navy running a super sale on leggings a couple of weeks ago. I hope you got them for a bargain price. : )
The leggings were from old navy!
Oh my goodness that jumpsuit is amazing!
I would shop at Crossroads with a teen. I love them because they offer a pretty diverse selection of clothes but still curated. When I was in high school I wore grunge-era flannels, denim, doc martens and t-shirts and shopped mostly vintage.
Love that. Vintage shopping is so great for teens!
Sorry this is off topic, but where are the wooden lego storage bins that are in the background of the photos from?? They are super cute and are exactly what we need. Thanks!
Aren’t they great? We found them at Target. They come in two sizes. Ours are the larger ones.
I should warn you, they are much more lightweight than they look. So I’m a little worried about how long they’ll last. But we’ve used them for several months now and so far so good.
Love that jumpsuit. It looks amazing on Olive! What a great birthday gift.
Right? Maude picked it out and thought it would fit, but wasn’t sure. And hooray! It fits perfectly.
Oh, love both of these two- and once again, each of your kids’ styles is showing through!
The jumpsuit looks fantastic- a bit retro and a bit highend fashion (I beleive Kate Spade had released something similar this summer but I like Olive’s better), but my favorite look from here here is red and white outfit. I love that she’s into vintage- and that she’s taking some fashion experiements and pulling them off like with the go-go boots.
Olive has fantastic style!
Your kids are very cool cats ;) I love the trendy tees and classic Chucks.
That being said, I can’t get into the whole “jumpsuit” thing… Maybe it’s because I’m only 1 year removed from snapping onesies onto babies…. I dunno.
Also, I’ve never been cool, so maybe that’s my problem! :D

OMG that jumpsuit is FAB! Olive looks amazing in it! Love all her choices. Very cool.
We ordered several things from Primary last fall and it was an awful experience. Three weeks to ship and then most went back because they were way too short or flimsy. Fall colored chinos arrived in a thin summer weight. Size 12 pants for my 10yo were ankle length. The return took six weeks after receipt to process! Unacceptable.
