Love the Place You Live: A Hike in the Woods

Fall has come in so gently and beautifully over the past few weeks, and the fantastic weather has really made us want to get outside and soak it up. So for this month’s Love The Place You Live exploration, we decided to seek out a hike through the local forest. Our town is actually very near a National Forest, and we drive through it all the time — but we’ve never stopped to hike!

We parked near a village called La Lande de Goult and started up a path through the woods to the top of a hill. (Maybe it’s a small mountain. Living near the Rockies makes you biased. : )

At the top, the path opened up on a clearing with a small church in the middle. There were views for miles!

The ferns were on their way out for the season and covered the ground in a brown blanket.

Pockets of intensely green moss peeked through fallen leaves.

It felt good to be outside.

Today it has been pouring rain, and I imagine we’ll be see a lot of wet days over the next month, so I was doubly happy we’d made the effort to fit in a hike.

Friends, I hope Love The Place You Live is helping you get out there and explore your communities. I LOVE reading the reports about your adventures. It’s so fun to see the column grow! Time Razor came on as a sponsor this month and they’re a perfect fit. Their free app has a database of millions of cool local events across the U.S. — some happening right near you!

The next Love the Place You Live post will be Monday, October 15th. I encourage you to do something local between now and then, because I’d love to read your writeup! I’ll try to remind everyone a few days before.

  1. “leaves of three let them be.” I am not absolutely sure, however I think that you have a nice picture of Poison Ivy. Just a hint to hikers, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with poisonous plants and vermin…..
    Happy Hiking

  2. LOVE that you’re wearing boots and a cute jacket…I have to live vicariously, as it’s still crazy hot here in Southern California. Moss? Ferns? What are those? ;-)

    1. You’re so sweet, Miranda! I feel like least photogenic person in the world most of the time, so when a decent photo happens to pop up, you can bet I post it asap. : )

The woods where we hiked look like they’re straight out of a fairy tale. Hansel and Gretel or maybe Little Red Riding Hood. ; )

  3. I love this feature on your blog, and I have always enjoyed reading other people’s links, this is the first time I have added one of my own. Thanks for reminding me to….well, stop and smell the roses in a way.

    1. I’ve never had luck growing moss — especially in the Western U.S. where it’s so, so dry. But I daydream about a walkway of stones with moss growing in between. Makes me happy just thinking about it.
