Jewelry Jars

I’ve been putting leftover yogurt jars to good use as jewelry organizers. Technically, these are not yogurt jars, they’re pot de creme jars instead — and they work especially well for this task because they have wide mouths and very low profiles.

Having my jewelry separated like this is so helpful to me! I keep all the little jars on a shelf in my bedroom and when I reach for a necklace or earrings, nothing is ever tangled or difficult to spot.

Since the jars are out in the open, I wanted to pretty them up a bit. So I lined them with origami paper. Perhaps fabric would work even better.

Start with scissors, a pencil, pretty paper and a jar or cup. The jar needs to have a rim that’s the same size as the bottom of the jewelry jar.

Trace a circle around the jar.

Cut it out.

Once your circle is cut out, simply put it in the bottom of the jar. The weight of the jewelry will keep it in place. Easy peasy.

That’s so simple it’s hardly even a DIY! : )

If you don’t have access to pot de creme jars, I bet the smallest canning jars would work just as well.

  1. You are very fortunate to have such pretty yogurt jars and not the plastic tubs every brand comes in back here in America. Of course, you prettied them up even more when you repurposed them. Lovely.

  2. I love this idea! Esp with the origami paper. Love, love, love! Trader Joe’s used to carry a European line of yogurts that came in glass jars; they were so great and I used to collect them, but alas! They are no longer available :( ~Melissa

  3. I love simple clear jars, maybe that’s why I have so many. I usually place small bunches of flowers in them and nestle them into a grouping . I now have some new plans for them. Chomping at the bit with my origami paper.

  4. Hmm. This looks pretty, but I don’t think I’d do it. Too busy, and probably harder to find things than when there is just a clear or single color bottom. Then again, I wear such tiny jewelry. :-)

  5. What a lovely idea beautifully done. It might take a few minutes to do but you’d save all that back in time spend untangling necklaces. Love it!

  6. Great idea!! I actually use the spice of life jars that I got from my mom when they moved to North Carolina. I have 3 different size jars, perfect for separating my bracelets from my necklaces & pins.

  7. Super cute. I use accordion mug racks – stretch them to fit the space you have, nail in place, and hang all your necklaces, bracelets, and headbands.

  8. All right, now – how do you keep June out of them? In my “Mommy Futurevision” I see a kid with a bunch of jewelry on the floor and a smashed earring. Of course, I have little boys too…..

  9. This is a brilliant idea. Keeps chains from getting tangled and one earring from losing the other one! I love it. We only have plastic, throw-away yogurt jars here. Got to come up with a plan! :)

  10. Love the idea of using them for hair ties. (You know, instead of the doorknob of the bathroom like I do. Drives my hubby nuts.) Just wish they were so easily appropriated around here. Also – you say they’re pots de creme jars? Is that the same as the fabulously rich pudding type desert that I love at one of our restaurants here? Or a fancy name for something we already know (like sour cream)? Either way – jealous. : )

  11. Very cute! Inspired by your idea to do something cute with them, I kept a set of 4 from when we were in Paris. This is a great idea!

I think I’m going to use my few to portion out some of the Swiss cocoa we brought back, and somehow incorporate the little french linen napkins I got on sale at BHV :).

The bottom left…what are those? They look like stitch markers! Are you a knitter and not telling us..or maybe I missed it! I keep all my stitch markers in one, usb keys in another..they are great for organizing desks too!

  13. So I got really motivated this past summer and made myself a wooden jewelry organizer that hangs on the wall. I have been gobsmacked about what to do with the little rings and earrings that can’t hang on the pegs. This idea is absolutely brilliant and the little jars I have been saving fit perfectly on the bottom. Thanks for the fab idea.
