Hi Friends! This is a little announcement to let you know Design Mom is hiring. I’m seeking an in-office assistant.

This is a part-time entry-level position. 20 hours per week — in office from 9:00 to 1:00, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, a particular day might need extra hours, so if you can stay longer sometimes, that’s great.

The job will include processing and responding to a ton of email — like incoming product pitches and event invitations and sponsorship inquiries. So applicants need strong communication skills and should be clear writers. The job will include running errands — generally work-related, but sometimes personal (because work life and personal life for bloggers often overlap). The job will include assisting on photo shoots, discussing the editorial calendar, and doing research (like figuring out what the rental van options are for 10+ people planning a two-week roadtrip…). The job could include attending blog-related events and possibly traveling for those events.

I’m seeking someone who is a creative problem solver, who has a knack for getting things all the way done. Someone who is energetic, who is excited about blogging and social media. I’m looking for someone who is positive and kind and fun to spend time with.

Interested? Are you a good fit for the job? Living in the East Bay? Available during the posted hours? Looking for entry-level work? Then I want to hear from you! Send me an email. Write a short intro letting me know a bit about yourself, and include links to any of your websites, blogs or social media accounts. At that point, I’ll contact candidates with further instructions.

Want to know more about the job? I’ve included some Q&A when you click through.

Q. Is this job paid? Are there benefits?

A. Yes, this job is paid. I offer competitive going rates for entry level work. But the job does not include insurance or retirement benefits.

Q. Do I need to be social media expert?

No, but you need to be familiar with, and a user of, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Part of the job may be keeping up with articles about social media trends and techniques.

Q. Would you consider a virtual assistant?

A. Not at this time. I’ve tried it and found that I’m someone who really needs an in-office assistant for certain tasks. I’m looking for someone who probably lives in the East Bay and can get to the office easily.

Q. Does this job have the potential to become full-time?

It’s possible. I don’t know yet. We’ll have to see what responsibilities the assistant excels at. But please note, that even at full-time, it would still be an entry level job.

Q. Will I be able to write blog posts for Design Mom or be a contributor?

A. No. I will continue being the author of blog posts. The job does not include writing blog posts or contributing to the blog. If you’re looking for that sort of work, this isn’t the right position.

Q. When does the job start?

A. I need someone right away, so as soon as I find the right person, the job begins.

Q. Do I need design skills for this job?

A. Not technically, though if you happen to be a graphic designer and know your way around Photoshop, that’s a huge bonus. And if you have good taste and an excellent eye, that’s a double bonus. Skills like that, in addition to the skills outlined in the job description, could definitely lead to more opportunities at Design Mom.

Q. Do I need to be a Design Mom reader?

A. Ideally, yes. If you’re not a reader, I would suggest digging into the archives. : )

Last time I put out a help wanted call, I really messed things up. First, I was in a dark place, and did a crummy job communicating with applicants. And second, the job description I wrote was no good — the applicants were universally over-qualified. Hah! This time, I want to be clear this is a very entry-level position. : )

The thing is, the perfect person for the job may not even see this notice — the candidate might be a recent college graduate who has moved back home with Dad and Mom and is not quite sure what to do next. But I’m hoping that someone reading might pass the word along to an interested party.

Thanks in advance! And if you have any other questions, just let me know.
