Happy Independence Day!

Any big plans for the day? I hope you get to introduce the silly fireworks of our childhood — snakes and sparklers and smoke bombs — to your kids. I hope you get to drink lemonade, and eat pasta salad, and corn-on-the-cob, and something cooked on a grill. I hope you get to see a parade and wear red-white-and-blue and wave an American flag.

I’m sending you patriotic thoughts and love for your community and country. Here’s one of my favorite verses from one of my favorite patriotic hymns, America the Beautiful:

Oh, beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law.
