By Gabrielle.
Something silly and fun. I introduced Maude to Gilmore Girls a few weeks ago and she’s so into it! I used to LOVE watching Gilmore Girls. It was a weekly treat for me. I loved how fast they talked and I got a kick out of seeing how many cultural (or pop cultural) references I could recognize. I recommended the show to Maude last year, but it wasn’t available on any of the online TV sources we use, and we both sort of forgot about it. Then, a couple of months ago, suddenly it was — Netflix made the whole series available all at once. Which has made for some delightful binge watching over the past month. Hah!
I’ve been sitting in on the episodes whenever I have a moment. I love that it still feels fresh and current, and I love that the character Rory is a terrific teenager with ambitious goals and a commitment to good grades. : )
It’s got me thinking about other out-of-production shows my teens might like. Freaks & Geeks for sure. (I didn’t learn about it until it was already over. It’s so good!) But I don’t know what else. I hear people mention shows like Felicity, My So Called Life, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I never got into any of those series, so I’m not sure if they’re good enough to recommend to my kids.
What about you? Have you introduced any out-of-production shows to your kids? Or maybe you’re waiting until they’re older? What are you excited to re-watch with them?
P.S. — If you know Gilmore Girls, no doubt you’ll be curious: Maude is currently Team Jess.

All. the way.
I would definitely wait until Maude’s a bit older. I was the same age as the main character Angela (a freshman in high school) when the show came out, so I really connected with it. If anything, the 90’s fashion is reason enough to check out the show. Oh and did I mention young Jared Leto? *sigh*

November 17, 2014 at 7:36 pmAwesome very real show, but yes, a bit heavy on the teen angst and situations. I adored Claire Danes then and now! LOL about Jordan Catalano :)

I may or may not have all seven seasons on DVD…..

November 17, 2014 at 4:12 pmMy daughter is 2 and I already can’t wait to watch Gilmore Girls with her! I am fast talker, so I really appreciate that about their characters!
My husband and I recently rewatched Freaks & Geeks – such a good show! It was really ahead of its time, we think. My cousin just watched Facts of Life on DVD – she thought it was good, especially for tweens/younger teens. It really handled some topical stuff, and the girls were good friends to each other.
Try Veronica Mars. It can be a little dark for a teen show, but it is smart, funny, interesting, and I love that the main character is an underdog. She also gets along well with her dad.
Design Mom
November 17, 2014 at 7:14 pmI agree. Totally ahead of it’s time.
And good call on Veronica Mars. That’s another show I was introduced to after it was already over, but I really enjoyed it.

November 17, 2014 at 7:14 pmHow could I forget about The Wonder Years?!! Such a good one. I wonder if it’s on Hulu/Netflix. I’ll have to do some searching.

November 17, 2014 at 7:38 pmI was about to suggest it! BEST show ever for family reality, true reality. I recall having my son start watching (maybe 5th grade?) and it took a few episodes before we couldn’t miss a week! He still remembers it and we reminisce together. Life lessons that he was going through I am sure at that age…wonderful!

November 20, 2014 at 10:07 pmI tried The Wonder Years again, and it was a little more mature than I remembered. Maybe it was just the first episode? I’m not ready for my kids to watch it, but my oldest is 10.
Another similar show, which isn’t out of production, is Granite Flats on BYU TV. A friend introduced it to us and my kids love it.

November 17, 2014 at 4:34 pmI loved Gilmore Girls all through high school and was the same age as Rory. But I didn’t like the choices she made in college, basically because I hated Logan. I tries to watch Felicity years ago and also found myself turned off by too many of her decisions that I couldn’t stick with it. I think that one would definitely be too adult for Maude but you should watch some yourself first since you know her best. I am trying to rewatch Gilmore Girls and see if I can make it to and through Logan.
Design Mom
November 17, 2014 at 7:16 pmLogan! That was his name. I had forgotten. Do you watch The Good Wife? The same actor that plays Logan has a significant role. I took me a minute to figure out I was familiar with him from Gilmore Girls!

November 17, 2014 at 5:03 pmThis post brings back many happy memories! About 7 years ago, my then 13 year old daughter was having a tough time figuring our her place in clique-plagued middle school. I decided that she needed something to look forward to each evening (after homework), so I borrowed The Gilmore Girl DVDs from a friend. Snuggled up on the couch together, we watched one episode each night and lost ourselves in the wonderful world of life in Stars Hollow. Like you, I loved that Rory was a kind, thoughtful, motivated young woman, and who doesn’t love Lauren Graham? We watched for an entire school year, and then had to wait until the last season came out on DVD. Now that it’s on Netflix, I feel a January binge coming on!
Design Mom
November 17, 2014 at 7:19 pmYay for Stars Hollow and Gilmore Girls!

November 17, 2014 at 5:38 pmOoh, huge GG fan here! I had been wanting to watch it again forever and was so excited when I found out it was coming out on Netflix in a couple weeks. I’ve been watching it almost nightly ever since while I work on things. My husband loves it too. I also enjoyed Felicity a lot but she does have a very different outlook on life than I do and so if I would want to watch it with my daughter to talk about the decisions she makes.

November 17, 2014 at 5:43 pmIf something ever beats Gilmore Girls as my favorite show it will be a crazy day. :) I own all 7 seasons on DVD, but I’ve been loving it on Netflix because I can watch it on my iPad – which is the only way I seem to watch any TV anymore. (And I was Team Dean when I watched the first time)
I do also really like the show Once Upon a Time. My kids are 7, 5 and 3 and they like to watch it too. The 4th season is currently playing on ABC and the first 3 are on Netflix. It’s kind of slow sometimes, but the way they take on classic fairy tale characters and twist them into their world is awesome.

November 17, 2014 at 5:57 pmAhh! I love Gilmore Girls! When I went to college, I had a part time job working at Blockbuster Video and my only unavailable day to work was Tuesdays, that way I could watch Gilmore Girls every week. (This was before PVR’s and during the time when VCR’s only recorded the channel you were on)
I loved Veronica Mars, and Sabrina the teenage witch. I don’t even know what Felicity is, i’ll have to look it up!

November 17, 2014 at 6:02 pmGabby. Gabrielle Blair. You must watch MSCL. Like now. Much like F&G, it was cancelled way too soon (first season!) but it is one for the ages. I still remember the article in Sassy magazine titled “Why we’re actually encouraging you to watch TV” with a photo of a very young Claire Danes (Daines?). Of course some shows still resonate decades later because of what it meant to you back then… so it might not be the same for you if you don’t have a connection to it from earlier years. But for me this show was a high school must–it came on during my junior year of HS, and every thursday we’d go to one of my girlfriends house to watch it. Anyway, I think you’d appreciate it, in a very 90’s nostalgia, angst-y teenager sort of way. Watch it first before you recommend to Maude.
And I LOVE GG. One of my all time faves and definitely makes me miss living in NY–it’s my east coast fix.
Design Mom
November 17, 2014 at 7:28 pmOkay. I’m convinced. I’ll watch it! ASAP.

November 17, 2014 at 6:06 pmI am a die-hard Felicity fan! I watched it when I was in college and could totally relate to the show and characters. But it’s definitely more for college age and older.
I’ve never watched Gilmore Girls, and everyone tells me I should. So I think that will be my next binge show.

November 17, 2014 at 7:28 pmDefinitely add Gilmore Girls to your list!

November 17, 2014 at 6:08 pmI know this is showing my age, but I introduced my daughter who was 16 at the time to Dark Shadows. I watched it with my mom when I was a teen. At first she thought it was terrible, but soon she was hooked. We spent the summer watching show after show that we checked out from the library. Several years later we went to a Dark Shadows reunion weekend in California. It was quirkey for sure, but fun mother and daughter bonding!

November 17, 2014 at 6:08 pmYES! I love so much about that show. I realized that when I first started watching it I was 2 years older than Rory and now I’m a few weeks shy of being Lorelai’s age. Sigh.
PS–how about Friday Night Lights? Last I checked it was on Netflix too.
Design Mom
November 17, 2014 at 7:27 pmFriday Night Lights is the BEST! I feel like she might need to be a tad bit older, but I can’t remember. I’ll have to watch a few episodes to remind myself. Good to know you’ve seen it on Netflix.

November 17, 2014 at 6:13 pmFreaks and Geeks is one of my favorite shows ever. The main character Lindsay had the best parents. I loved watching all the scenes they were in. I just watched the GG for the first time on Netflix and loved it as well. Team Jess all the way. Not sure how I would have felt if I had watched it younger, but the Dean character comes off as psychotic after about three dates.

November 17, 2014 at 6:33 pmMy daughter and I watched GG together all the way through a couple of years ago. Loved it! We still put it on now and then. My kids (older teens) loved Freaks & Geeks and The West Wing. We’re Americans living in Australia so I tell myself that West Wing is their US civics lesson, ha!
Design Mom
November 17, 2014 at 7:24 pmHow fun! I didn’t get the chance to watch The West Wing when it was on, but I get the idea that it wasn’t as scandalous as some of the current D.C. themed series. (Pun intended.)

November 17, 2014 at 6:40 pmMy kids ages 13 and. 17 loved watching Leave it to Beaver, the Dick Van Dyke show, and currently the Brady Bunch. They like current shows too, especially Middle and Modern Family, but those old shows are a special treat.

November 17, 2014 at 7:33 pmMy twenty-something year old daughter turned me onto Buffy the Vampire Slayer about ten years ago. I warned her I am totally not into scary violence, but she said I could handle this.. And I could.. We ended up watching together a lot. I love Buffy for the powerful, honest young woman she is, and for the complexity of the stories and her relationships with various people. Super enjoyable. Highly recommend.

November 17, 2014 at 7:44 pmLove Gilmore Girls! Does anyone else want to live in that cozy, happy little town and perhaps run an inn!? I do! Some of it was too silly (like their babbling back and forth) but I imagine that added charm for many. I can’t quite put my finger on why it’s so special, but perhaps it was the simple, calm “atmosphere” that we see so little of with today’s tv (including goofy cheering in the background). Love the two actresses too. ♥

November 17, 2014 at 7:51 pmI loved Gilmore Girls and just finished binge watching it again. My all time favorites are Parenthood and Malcolm in the Middle. I love it when tv characters are complex- not one dimensional and totally predictable.

November 17, 2014 at 7:52 pmFelicity is great for older high schoolers! I loved watching it with my mom.
I also HIGHLY recommend Friday Night Lights, which is on Netflix, and Parenthood, which is in its last season. Wonderful for teens and adults!

November 17, 2014 at 7:58 pmThe whole family loved Gilmore Girls. I think the kids now in their eerly 20s are re-watching.
When they were little, we all enjoyed Fudge. Two seasons only in the mid 90s, based on Judy Blume’s books.

November 17, 2014 at 8:53 pmI LOVE Gilmore Girls and have watched the entire series multiple times. I’m team Jess too. I also really liked Marty “naked guy” from Yale. I’m not sure if she is too young, but Parenthood is also a good show with strong female characters.

November 17, 2014 at 8:54 pmI’m definitely on Team Jess when it comes to Gilmore Girls, but Team Agos when it comes to the Good Wife! Freaks and Geeks and My So-Called Life are great suggestions; I would say The Adventures of Pete and Pete is more of a kids show but with great themes and even better cameos!
I watched Felicity when it was on the air, but in retrospect, it’s a bit more mature and she was a terrible decision-maker.
Finally, it’s super cheesy but I have to throw in a vote for Degrassi.

November 17, 2014 at 9:17 pmAlias! It ran 5 seasons, and my sisters and I watched it when it aired (we were in high school). My parents were very strict on media, and we watched it as a family. Of course they are adults…but I don’t remember it being bad. We have all the seasons and pass it to each other. Also, Veronica mars. It is GOLDEN! The fans love it so much, it was the fastest earning kick starter ever to make it into a movie (years after it aired). The movie was fun and picked right back up. Fun fandom!

November 17, 2014 at 9:42 pmYes! I was a huge Alias devotee in grad school–

November 17, 2014 at 9:21 pmJust read a few comments- Once upon a time is my currently running favorite. I love the fresh ideas each season…one of the few shows that I can’t guess what’s next! It is written by the writers of lost…which I never saw, but knew was popular. Plus they added all of the Frozen characters to Once this season…I think they were perfectly cast!

November 17, 2014 at 9:24 pmI <3 Gilmore Girls! But I'm Team Logan :D
Funny story, a couple of weeks back I was giving a gift wrapping class. One of the participants was a precocious young girl (about 9 or so) named Rory. Upon meeting her I was like "Oh, like Rory from Gilmore Girls?" She'd never heard of the show but her Mom heard me talking to her and explained that yes she was named after Rory Gilmore. Turns out the mom was pregnant with Rory while the show was running.

November 17, 2014 at 9:32 pmLove!
I went to school with Alexis Bledel (Rory) so I’ve always had a soft spot for her and hoped she would do well.
My daughter is one now, so I fear the show may be terribly outdated by the time she’s old enough to watch. Sigh.

November 18, 2014 at 12:53 amI love love love Gilmore Girls, I (binge) watch the whole 7 seasons every year or so!
I love Emily and Richard! I can’t wait for my daughter to be 13 or so to start watching with me, but she’ll have to be able to read the subtitles (we’re French)really fast, as Lorelei and Rory talk like machine guns!
Right now, to get used to watching shows in English with subtitles, we’re watching

November 18, 2014 at 3:42 amYou know what, Gabrielle, I’ve noticed lots of people mentioning rewatching Gilmore Girls on FB lately (seems a popular mat-leave binge watch) and I have never really shared the love for the show — when it came out I was Rory’s age and found her annoying – I was like, nooo wayyyyyy, that awkward studious girl would not be so perfect pretty and would not have all those clever cultural references, pshhhhh. I really didn’t like how I felt that they all talked exactly the same. But when you mentioned the show, I was curious to see what I would think of it now, so I just watched the first episode, and of course now I am 30 – roughly Lorelei’s age, and interestingly I enjoy the show much more relating to her, rather than Rory. I think I may just watch a few more while I slog away at the laundry!

November 18, 2014 at 4:13 amI loved Jess too! Such a misunderstood youth. I miss this show immensely. Buffy is also an incredible show. If you are okay with them viewing sex outside of marriage (it emphasizes the first time being with someone you love and trust), it’s quite an intelligent show with some amazing themes and lessons. I discovered it in university after we discussed the groundbreaking nature of the character of Buffy for women in TV.
Jasna
November 18, 2014 at 5:11 amMy So Called Life is an absolute must for teenagers! Angela Chase is such an amazing character, I was in awe of her. And she’s a really good role model with real problems and concerns. I loved the show so much 20 (ouch!) years ago that I still watch it sometimes. As soon as you find out that Maude has a crush on someone, it’s time for My So Called Life! :-)
Sasha
November 18, 2014 at 6:55 amOne more mention on Bunheads. It came out about 2 years ago, but only for one season on ABC Family. It was written by the same creator of Gilmore Girls. Same sassy writing, lots of the same lovable actors and more strong females (albeit with plenty of character flaws!).

November 18, 2014 at 7:59 amI’m not sure how, but I’ve NEVER watched Gilmore Girls. It is absolutely on my list though and I plan on having it on in the background when I’m doing any non-writing work.
I definitely agree with Freaks and Geeks, My So-Called Life and Felicity and can’t believe no one has thrown Dawson’s Creek into the equation. Angsty, yes, but I loved every last drop of that show.

November 18, 2014 at 8:00 amTeam Jess! I absolutely loved watching Gilmore Girls–just like you, I looked forward to it as a weekly treat. I also didn’t find out about Freaks and Geeks until it was over. My boyfriend (now husband) introduced it to me on DVD and that was some seriously fun binge-watching too.
My So Called Life was definitely a high school must-watch for me. Oddly enough, I most often watched it with my dad, who absolutely fell in love with the show. So much so that I actually bought him the boxed set later on as a silly, ‘remember when’-type gift. I went through a number of hair dying phases in high school, and always went some shade of red. Whenever I’d show up with new red hair my dad would tease me by calling me Angela.

November 18, 2014 at 8:49 amMy so called life, definetely! It’s all avaiable on youtube!

November 18, 2014 at 9:00 amThe other shows are great, but I do especially encourage you to watch My So Called Life. My parents were pretty strict (especially about watching TV) and I was allowed to watch the pilot episode when it came out. I was in 8th grade and the characters and content struck such a nerve with me that I actually asked my parents to watch it with me! I really felt they would understand my adolescent struggles so much better by watching the show because it was so well depicted ;)
There are some heavy themes, and it is ripe with 90’s flavor but so so good.

November 18, 2014 at 12:18 pmAhhh Gilmore Girls. I’ve been binge watching it on Netflix too! It’s one of those shows that my husband says “no thanks” to, but then I catch him lurking in the shadows, secretly watching over my shoulder with a goofy grin.

November 18, 2014 at 2:36 pmWhy has no one mentioned Dave, Lane’s boyfriend? I loved him!
I agree with Sabrina the TeenagedWitch, and would add Two of a Kind (it’s the Olsen twins while they were still cute and wholesome). I introduced the girl I babysit to those two shows and she loved them. Felicity is much too old int its content, I would say!
Thanks for starting this conversation!

November 18, 2014 at 5:08 pmAnother vote for Felicity (team Ben all the way) and My So Called Life (we’ve all had a “Jordan Catalano”.) Remember “Party of Five?” I loved it in the 90s. Charlie, Bailey, Julia, Claudia and Owen! I even named my son after the Griffin character – don’t tell my husband.

November 18, 2014 at 6:41 pmI was never into the Gilmore Girls. My thing has always been the cult TV shows: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Doctor Who, Merlin, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, etc. Buffy is pretty campy, but it’s a great show if you’re into the monsters and ghouls type thing. All of Joss Whedon’s shows have great female characters as well. Buffy is not a family show though; I would only recommend it for someone 13 or older, as there are some sexual situations and adult themes in the show.

November 19, 2014 at 6:06 amGoodness, what a blast from the past. I loved “my so-calledlife” and “Felicity” (till it got weird)! Would love to see both again!

November 19, 2014 at 3:16 pmMy daughter, who is 14 has started watching Gilmore Girls too. We just started season 3. Love the witty banter and that Rory is smart, sassy and good. Felicity was really good in the beginning then……. not so much.

November 19, 2014 at 9:17 pmI too have been rewatching Gilmore Girls thanks to Netflix. It is interesting to watch it now as a 30 year old mom. I find myself a lot more drawn to the Lorelai-Emily storyline. So sad. And I always wondered why there are never discussions over Lorelai’s guys? Although I like Luke, I always loved Max! They had him too early and too good in the show to keep him, but oh what a guy. So much better than Jason and even Christopher. Anyone else Team Max? Ha!

November 20, 2014 at 5:55 amMy 12 year old twin daughters and I watched the entire run of the Gilmore Girls a couple summers ago (somehow I had missed it on the first go-around) and it still ranks as our top, go-to comfort watch for too many reasons to list. We started on The Wonder Years this fall – so it’s middle school, not HS, but it’s as real and spot on as it was when I watched it growing up. The issues are small but very much the stuff kids still worry and revel in. And it generates a lot of conversation about their own lives, which is an added bonus. Thanks to Netflix for making all 6 seasons available online!

November 20, 2014 at 2:19 pmI watched a all the seasons of Gilmore Girls while pregnant with my first daughter. I think she came out singing the theme song. Another show that was fun was Daria.

November 20, 2014 at 2:21 pmOh, and I can’t wait to introduce my kids to Parks and Recreation. And they already love shows like the Andy Griffith Show and The Walton’s and I Love Lucy.

November 20, 2014 at 6:28 pmI’m just getting into Gilmore Girls for the very first time too via Netflix. I think I’m team Jess too… just starting to get into that drama, but I like him more so far. ;)
I can’t wait for the weekend so I can power through a bunch of episodes.

November 20, 2014 at 10:11 pmI’m currently rewatching GG on Netflix and loving it all over again. My 3 year old daughter dances to the theme song every time!
I loved the Cosby Show and its spinoff A Different World as a kid. But with the 15 women accusing Bill Cosby of sexual assault, I will not be rewatching the series with my kids.
My So-Called Life was a brilliant show that should never have been canceled so early. I’ll definitely push my kids to watch that one.

November 20, 2014 at 10:12 pmMy tween niece obsessed over Merlin (the 2009-2012 version on Netflix). She kept trying to get my and my husband into it. It didn’t take, but I keep thinking that if I watched without my hubby, I might like it. I know she and her mom watched together each week and it was sacred time.

December 12, 2014 at 12:47 pmThis is a delayed response, but I’m just catching up on your blog…
I grew up watching Star Trek: Voyager–strange for a little girl, but apparently my mom had read a parenting magazine article that said something about how if you’re going to let your little girl watch a TV show, THAT was the series to let her watch because it featured a strong, confident, totally boss female captain (in stark contrast to the Kirks and Picards of seasons past).
I’d recommend Buffy for similar reasons, although the later seasons have some extremely racy story lines–definitely better for an older teen. And even as an older (LDS) teen I didn’t always feel comfortable watching certain episodes.
I discovered and loved Felicity in high school, but looking at it from an adult point of view I’m not sure it sends the right message, especially for a younger viewer. Felicity essentially drops everything to pursue a boy across the country to NYC. And they’re in college, so there are of course some adult themes. However, I loved it because like Felicity, I too moved from California to NYC for college–but in pursuit of an Ivy League education, not a boy!
My belated two cents!
