France

Since both Ben Blair and I can work from anywhere, we are dreaming of living abroad for a year (and even making some tentative plans!). Ben Blair has been looking into housing and found this Master’s House. It’s located in a small French village, 2 hours from Paris and 2 miles from the beach. It sits on 4 landscaped acres and shockingly, it’s in our budget. In fact, it’s less than the rent we paid in New York. A dining room for 30, 8 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 6 fireplaces. Oh. And a tennis court. More space than we need. Maybe you will come to visit us and help fill it up. : )

I’m sure it will be taken between now and when we’re actually ready to move, but it’s fun to think about.

What do you think? Would you like living abroad with your family? If you could work from anywhere, where would you pick?

  1. Bonjour! We’ve been in Brussels for the past 3 months…love it! Diego (2 1/2) is already in school! I’m just happy we can provide him this experience.

  2. Gabby, move to France!!! That would be so cool, and something that you would never regret! You should do it now before Ralph gets into High school. Anything you miss from the United States I would totally mail to you. See, you’re set! :)

  3. Go for it, Blairs. A year abroad is the best gift you can give your kids and yourself to open up your world view! Evan and I did it when our oldest was 1. We lived in Italy for 6 months and loved every minute. It has really shaped our lives in so many ways. Unfortunately, we were unable stay longer but the experience we did share has had lasting profound effects! FYI: We leased a brand new Renault car for a great price including insurance. If you want more info, let me know. Cheers!

  4. I am just seeing this and am so happy for you! My husband and I are doing our first trip along these lines because we too can both work from anywhere. Ours is only for a month tho. So cool to see you doing it with kids and for a whole year! I am interested to hear how you do it all. Myhusband said “the Four Work Week” has all kinds of tips for doing this safe and well. I’m looking forward to using your site as a good resource too! Yea!

  5. Just discovered your site (how can that be?!) and I’m going to dive into your experiences in planning this trip. My family is planning to spend a year abroad within the next five years — I’m an early planner — with about six months in Italy. Just beginning to look into logistics but it’s already very exciting! All the best to you …

  6. I love that you have made this happen… I know by now you’re already in France, but I had to add where my family is trying to move to for a while… SPAIN. We LOVE Spain. And we’re going to make it work. Thank you the inspiration!

  7. I just began reading your blog and have become consumed by it….the thought of living abroad is one I carry with me every day since we moved back from Mexico 5 years ago. I have a young son and would like to grow my brood abroad. I’ve been a foreigner for almost half of my life and its an experience that only enriches the lives of children and strengthens the bond of a marriage and family. Go you!

  8. Eternally seductive – France and French properties are just so enchanting aren’t they!” I lived in France for a year and part of that time my abode was a 6 man frame tent – still – it did nothing to dent my love of the country – in fact it enhanced it as I was so close to nature.

Thank you for such an evocative photograph – what dreama (and maybe) reality are made of!
