In the mood for some book recommendations? Here are four summer picture books that would complement your summer in a lovely way.

First up, National Parks of the U.S.A., by Kate Siber, with illustrations by Chris Turnham.

This is such a great book! It’s large format and filled with fun details and trivia. It will make you want to hit the road and start exploring. It also gave me further reasons to be grateful we’ve preserved these amazing spaces, and makes me want to keep them as pristine and beautiful as possible.

Next, Cycle City, by Alison Farrell.

I love books like this! Big spreads, filled with tons of details, and prompts to find particular items or instances. The basic story here is little Etta the Elephant going to her Aunt Ellen’s house, and exploring bicycle-filled Cycle City as she goes.

Have you ever been to Amsterdam? There are more bikes there than I have ever seen in one place! This happy book had me reminiscing about the bike culture there.

The third of my summer picture books recommendations is Everything You Need for a Treehouse, by Carter Higgins, with illustrations by Emily Hughes.

You’ll love this one, I’m sure of it. Are you or your kiddos dreaming about a treehouse? Well as long as it’s still in the dream stage, what’s the harm in dreaming up something as amazing and magical and fantastic as possible?

The words are poetic, and the images will beckon memories of reading Swiss Family Robinson.

I wrote about Wee Society’s Me Journal a couple of years ago. It’s one of those terrific interactive journals for young children, filled with simple prompts, where you can check off a box, or draw a picture, or write your first sentence.

And now, Wee Society has expanded their journal options with a travel collection called Go! My Adventure Journal.

The collection comes in three different jacket colors — red, yellow, and blue. So you can use a different one for each vacation you take. They’re filled with creative and simple thought-starters so your kids can capture cool things they spot, new things they try, and people they meet. There are also adventure badges, stickers, pockets to keep photos or ephemera, and postcards.

How is your summer reading going? Any summer picture books you’ve picked up? Or checked out at your library?

  1. Cycle CIty reminds me of a Richard Scarrey book. All the details are sure to incite conversations about what’s happening in the picture spreads. LOVE your bookmark reviews.

      1. Just returned ‘Everything You Need For A Treehouse’ to my local library. I’m a kid at heart & love that book! Still fun to dream about living in a treehouse at the young age of 63.🌳

  2. Is it wrong to want all of these for myself? Beautiful picture books make me so happy. I could see the treehouse book really inspiring my kiddo to get outside and build something, and the adventure journal is perfect to bring on vacation. Thanks for the recommendations! Going to fill my cart with books now…

    1. I LOVE the treehouse one. Fun fact: the author — Carter Higgins — used to write children’s book reviews for Design Mom when I had a team of contributors. So rad!

  3. I always love checking out your book recommendations. A truly good picture book should be just as fun for the parent reading it as it is for the child. Thank again for sharing these!!

  4. Ordered the National Parks book as soon as I saw it…it has already arrived and is absolutely beautiful. Mu husband and I are currently converting a school bus into a tiny home, and looking to take off on a cross country adventure with our two children. This book will be a great resource for the trip! Thanks for the recommendation!

  5. I sent the National Parks book to my mom on your recommendation as a surprise “just because” gift. She loves it! Great recommendation!

  6. Love these books! Especially Carter’s “Everything You Need For a Treehouse”. I always loved reading Carter’s posts when she was a contributor here awhile back.
