Hello, Friends. How are you? How was your week? Anything exciting going on? We’re having a typical the-end-of-the-school-year-is-near weekend. Oscar has a campout with his scout troop. Olive has a school art show and Mormon Prom. Stuff like that.
For next weekend, I’m thinking about taking a private garden tour. Is anything like that offered where you live? Our Garden Conservancy hosts Open Days Garden Tours — the next one is May 11th — where you can visit a handful of private gardens (and kids 12 and under are free!).
I heard about these tours from my friend Keeyla Meadows. Keelya is a landscape designer and ceramic artist and she teaches classes on how to be fearless with color. Her house is one of the tour spots! I got to visit her garden/studio in early spring (snapshot above) and it was already stunning — I imagine it’s completely bursting with color now. Have you ever taken a private garden tour?
Ready for links? Here are a few things I’ve wanted to share:
– Super sweet. You can visit this forum when you need a mom but don’t have access to a supportive one.
-Holy crap it’s dangerous to be a woman. 75% of women with a history of intimate partner violence have had at least one (TBI) Traumatic Brain Injury. Annually about 1,600,000 women sustain repetitive TBIs (due to violent partners). In comparison, the annual number of TBIs for the military is 18,000, and for the NFL is 281. “If brain injury is the ‘invisible illness’ of our time, then within this invisible injury, women have been the invisible patients.”
-The world’s largest medical drone delivery service has been launched in Ghana, allowing suppliers to be delivered to some of the country’s most isolated places. That’s seems like progress, right? Is there a hidden catch?
–Multiply your time by asking four questions about the stuff on your to-do list.
-What if Instagram had been around during the Holocaust? The true story of a 13-year-old girl murdered in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz has been brought to life on Insta-Stories. (WP)
-This is hard news. Sexual assaults in the military have risen by 38% in two years.
-Need a spell or a hex? These Romanian witches offer online services.
-Woah. Seasonal allergies exist because urban environments planted exclusively male, often cloned, plants for the last 70 yrs since they’re “litter-free” — trading the biome’s female seed pods for excess allergenic pollen. Clearly patriarchy, in all its forms, brings problems.
-Hah! How I Stopped Getting Unwanted Attention From Men.
-A dedicated clean-up team sent to Mount Everest has collected three tons of garbage in its first two weeks, in an ambitious plan to clean the world’s highest rubbish dump.
–Alexa, cook dinner. : )
-Wait. What? There’s like a raisin mafia? (NYT) For real? I know raisins get a bad rap, and it’s true I don’t like them in cookies. But I love adding them to a bowl of Crispix, and I’m a fan of cinnamon raisin bread too. Oh, and when we lived in France, I adored pain aux raisins. Do you have strong raisin opinions?
I hope you have the BEST weekend. I’ll meet you back here on Monday. I miss you already.
