Hair Relief

I got my hair done last night. It was in sad, sad shape — I hadn't made time to get it done since I moved. But now I've discovered Natalie. She's a hair genius. And I feel totally hot. If you want Natalie to cut your hair, you can find her here.

Also. One of the funnest parts of getting my hair done was talking blogging and social media. Natalie and her friend Ashley just launched a cute new site called Sensibly Styled. The tag line: Sensibly Styled finds all the modest clothing, from all the brands you love, and puts it all in one place.

It was fun to talk strategy and share advice on growing a site. Man. I can pretty much talk social media all. day. long.

Outfit pictured put together by Sensibly Styled.

Watch

Did I tell you what Ben Blair gave me for my birthday? This rad watch.

When the hip girls from Brooklyn would move to my neighborhood in New York, I would study them for the latest in cool. Amy Palmer, who is effortlessly stylish, would wear a
Casio. Or sometimes a calculator watch (remember those?).

Little Jules Giveaway

Oh goody! Today's Giveaway is something for you. And something for your sweetheart. Loot worth $200. A beautiful

Speaking of Father's Day shopping, you might want to use this prize as inspiration for a new tradition: a gift for him that happens to come with a little something for you as well (wink).

Both the locket and the cufflinks are handcrafted from sterling silver and completely customizable. A photo can be added to the locket through a little slot at the top. They are delicate and gorgeous — as are all the pretty offerings at Julian & Co. The cufflinks and locket each retail for $99.00.

Be Kind to Mom Space — by Guest Mom Lara Fishman

Hi Ladies! Happy to be blogging here this week. My first post is all about mom space.

Ideally, all moms would have a “Be Kind to Mom” Space at home — a separate room where husbands and kids aren't allowed. Obviously, not everyone has such a sanctuary, but here are a few tips on how to carve out some Mom space in any home.

Start by locating a spot in the house where you can get a bit of privacy.
For some this might be the bathroom. If that’s the case, invest in some scented candles and Lucite necklace stands. Set aside some space on the counter where you can display all the things that make you feel lovely. Make the time to take a hot bath. One of my favorite tricks: bring in some orchids and steam them in the shower with you. A few small touches and any bathroom can feel like a spa getaway.

If you're lucky enough to have a dressing room, take full advantage of it. I've filled mine with happy things — framed artwork that reminds me of my years in Paris as a student, and drawings by my kids. I love how the cowhide rug feels on my bare feet.

For some moms, your space might be a little reading corner in the living room that you can make cozy and welcoming. Invest in the perfect chair, then pair it with a little vintage table where you can set your tea. Add a great cozy throw and not-too-bright-lighting, and you’ll feel miles away from the craziness of everyday.

And if you really can't find a space to carve out, then create a mobile sanctuary. There are several companies that make great drawers set on casters. Fill the drawers with pretty things and make any small space in the house your own with a mobile mom sanctuary.

How about you? Do you have any special mom space in your home? What would you include in your mom sanctuary if you had one?

The one thing I hope you remember — by Guest Mom Amy Smart

Motherhood is good work — the best kind — but it’s work nonetheless. And sometimes it feels totally overwhelming.

Having a creative outlet is the aspect of my life that has kept me sane. Sounds cliché, but it’s true. It’s therapeutic for me to have some short-term creative projects in the midst of the long-term creative process of raising children.

I have a feeling this may be the first time Dolly Parton has ever been quoted on Design Mom, but it’s always good to break new ground, right? I recently found these lyrics and they spoke to me.

It takes all I’ve got to give what life demands.

You’ll go insane if you give in to it,

Life’s a mill and I’ve been through it,

I’m just grateful I’m creative with my hands.

So here’s the one thing I hope you remember from Amy Smart: Find something you love to do and do it.

Not because you want to get a bunch of new comments on your blog, or because you want to become the next Martha, or because you want to win a blue ribbon at the state fair. But because it feeds some part of you that needs feeding.

Just don’t try to do it all. You’ve really got to narrow your focus. For right now, I’ve narrowed it down to one thing.

And I set up shop in the middle of the family room with the kids buzzing around me. I try to avoid using the computer when they are around because I don’t like the thought of them just looking at the back of my head. But I do sew with them around. (This doesn’t mean there aren’t frequent interruptions and occasional balls thrown at my head or Hot Wheels cars driving across my back). I like them seeing me do something artistic, and I’ve seen the way it affects my kids’ creativity.

In the meantime, I totally enjoy admiring the work of other women. Especially when they do something I don’t do. Don’t feel guilty or compare what you do to what other people do. Enjoy the beauty they create as well.

So, pick your thing. And love it. Whether it’s baking a loaf of bread, or playing the piano, or doing Pilates, or knitting socks, or digging in the dirt. Nourish your soul. Then you can better nourish the little souls that live with you.

Thanks again to Gabby for letting me come hang out this week and to all of you for your encouraging comments. I’d love to hang out with you more in the future, so drop in for a visit!

Giveaway — Business Minded Ladies

Goodness. There's a whole lot happening this month with women and social media. Women everywhere, who started blogging or twittering or podcasting on a whim (like myself) have seen a lot of potential for growth and opportunity in this emerging field. And we're getting together right and left to talk about things and get ideas and share our knowledge.

Sometimes these get togethers are simple meetups over drinks. Other times, the conversations turn into full-blown conferences. Last week, ladies all over the country attended Blissdom. Next week, ladies all over the country will be heading to Houston for Mom 2.0. (I'm one of the speakers and kirtsy is putting it on — so I'm super excited about it.)

Anyway. The point of all this is that I thought it would be great to celebrate the fact that women who didn't consider themselves business-y at all, are getting all entrepreneurial on us. Thanks to social media. So the prizes for the Design Mom Giveaway today are all about these women. Five winners in all!

TWO of you will win Peek email devices. (Cherry red ones, of course. Because it's Valentine's Day this weekend.)

You've probably heard about Peek already. It's brilliant. And it's getting written up like crazy by all the major media — receiving rave reviews right and left. Think of Peek as blackberry-lite. It provides email. Period. In a very less is more sort of way. Perfect for the mom who's running errands all day and wishes she could check her email from time to time. Peek is a great companion to her basic-cell-phone-that-works-just-fine-thank-you-very-much. And it's perfectly easy to use. You can explore the device in depth here.

This is where Peek is extra brilliant. The bells and whistles that a smartphone provide are cool, but you have to pay for them. The phones are expensive and the monthly plans that go with them are astronomical and often, binding for years. But the Peek offers unlimited email and texting for just $19.95 each month. No contracts. Ever. With coverage all over the country. Plus they're super sleek.

Honestly — unless you're a hard core tech person, Peek is all the email gadget you'll ever want or need.

THREE of you will win 1000 business cards, custom printed just for you by AllBusinessCards.com.

The thing to do at these meetups and conferences and Hands on Kirtsy sessions is exchange cards. Something that lists your blog url or twitter handle. So that people can find you after the conference. But I know as well as anybody, that when you're just starting up a business or a blog, and you're not even sure where you're going to go with it, that spending even a few dollars on supplies or marketing materials is painful.

Free business cards will ease your conference expenses in a real way.
And
AllBusinessCards.com will make it easy for you to get them. You can design your card online using their tools. Or upload a file your graphic designer brother made for you. Either way, they'll print and ship them to you pronto.

You've got your Peek. You've got you're business cards. Looks like you're ready to attend a social media conference. Go you! And a big thank you to
Peek and AllBusinessCards.com.

By the way, if you're itching to exchange business cards right this minute and you're in Utah, there's an opportunity tonight. Startup Princess is holding a Twitter-pated event to teach women how to use this fun tool. Plus, my sister-in-law Liz Stanley will be there schooling women on how to make the most of kirtsy. Find out more here.

Guidelines:
-You have until Midnight PST on Sunday, February 15th to enter this giveaway.
-Just make a comment ON THIS POST to enter — any comment. One entry per person, please.

Bike Tags

Favorite find of the week. (It's only Monday, so maybe it's presumptuous to assume this is the favorite thing I'll find all week. But I'm going to to risk it anyway.) Bike Tags at Heros and Criminals.

Bike tags? What are bike tags? Well. Let me just grab text directly from the product description:

Ever see a sweet bike on the street and wish there was a way to tell that person how much you love their bike? Well I do, so I made these tags, perfect for hanging on the handle bars of all my favorite bikes in town. Just carry a few in your pocket everywhere you go so you'll always be ready to leave a note to share some bike love.

Ummm. Okay. I'm in. I'll do it! I'll leave notes on bikes. Sign me up. I love it. It's my favorite thing ever.

Everyone Is Beautiful

Random House sent an advance reader's copy of Katherine Center's new book, Everyone is Beautiful. I was excited to receive it and I absolutely plowed through it.

At the beginning of the book, the main character is at the park with her three very young children, including a baby — a months-old baby. Another mother walks up and tries to start a friendly conversation by asking, "When are you due?" Our not-pregnant heroine is shocked and mortified. She knows she's not back to pre-baby weight. But she doesn't even want to imagine that she looks pregnant. She can't bare to tell the truth and just makes up a date.

From that point on you know you'd want her for a bff.

Know who else I want for a bff? Katherine Center. Katherine was a Guest Mom here awhile back and she was lovely. Plus. On my first trip to Houston, she brought me an unexpected gift. A beautiful glass cup with metallic markings. (I keep it on my bathroom counter and use it every day.) Katherine is that sort of really thoughtful person. Plus. She's smart. I'm hoping to gain some of her smartness when I hear her speak at the Mom 2.0 Summit. (Are you coming? It's going to be fantastic.)

Everyone Is Beautiful goes on sale February 17th. You can pre-order a copy here.

What to Pack for Mexico

Did I mention I'm going to Mexico on Saturday (hooray!)? Packing is on my mind. Here's a wishlist:

-Pretty Peacock Havaianas from Piperlime.
-Something interesting to read and discuss, like Outliers by Malcom Gladwell.
-Sunglasses at Forever 21. Cheap, so I won't be sad when I lose them
.
-Polka-dot Twist Tank from J Crew. Thankfully it comes with a removable halter strap, because friends, I am not well-enough endowed to hold a suit like that up.
-An Embroidered Peasant Dress to wear over my swimsuit. I've seen these in etsy shops and ebay but haven't placed an order yet — hopefully I can pick one up on location.
-And an Artist's Tote from Anthropologie to carry the lot.

Advice Please

I've been looking for a new heavy coat and found this beautiful red one at TJ Maxx the other day. I'm loving the shape, loving the details, and loving that it was a bargain for an overcoat at $60. Plus, it's from Esprit which made me happy — I don't think I've worn anything from the Esprit line since junior high. : )

Only problem, it's a size too big (and they didn't have a smaller size). Other only problem, will I like it less after Christmas when I've had my fill of red?

Do I keep it? Or return it? Feeling so indecisive...

Random Giveaway — Orla Kiely Handbag, plus $150 Gift Certificate from All About Cute

I'm feeling pretty celebratory — for all sorts of reasons — so how about a super-cool Giveaway? Actually. How about a super-cool Double Giveaway! There's a new shop out there called All About Cute (great name!). And they want to give you something.

First off, they want to give you a Boulevard Laminated Shoulder Bag. And it's fantastic. See?:

Lots to love about this prize. It's a handbag — can't have enough of those. It's covered in lollipop trees — which makes it match my celebratory mood. And it's designed by Orla Kiely, and crafted from her signature laminated cotton-canvas — so I can't help but covet it. Probably the best part about this bag is that you can win it for free! And make all your friends jealous.

But there's more. Say you don't particularly need the handbag (maybe because you're an Orla Kiely fan and have two of these bags in your possession already). Then you should know, there's also an additional prize. For an additional winner. It's a $150 gift certificate to All About Cute. With which you can buy whatever you'd like. Sew What? — by Guest Mom Mrs. Dub

So I'm the third girl in my family, with a little brother finishing it off. My mother is a quilter. And no, not the kind of quilts your mom made with all your soccer jerseys. My mom is a quilt artist, as is evidenced by her "stash" seen here. (Though I can assure that is only a small sampling of her fabric. The quantity of material in that woman's possession is illegal in 23 states.)

My other two sisters are excellent seamstresses. One sewed my wedding invitations, the other sews her own winter coats. I, on the other hand, am just learning how to thread a bobbin.

I've frequently pestered my mom as to why I was never taught to sew, since it's clearly in our blood. She claims she tried, and I wasn't interested. Probably true, as I very involved with boy-chasing as a youth, but it's a huge regret of mine, because sewing is, like, the best thing EVER.

The point of this rambling is that when I finally learn to sew I am going to immediately make this beautiful headband by giantdwarf — after first sewing some curtains and some pillow covers and adorning every last sweater I own with a bird. Then, I'm going to make it, and I'm going to wear it every day, even to the grocery store. And then I'll go home and die because I'll be 95 by the time I figure out that stupid bobbin.

Hosting for Dummies — by Guest Mom Mrs. Dub

Like many in the DM Club, I have a compulsion to throw parties. I would actually prefer to be a guest at a cool gathering, but so would everyone else, so I play party martyr a few times a year. My biggest weakness is baby showers. I could meet you in the check-out line, and I would offer to host your shower. (That actually happened.)

Thankfully, my bestie and her sis run Gourmet Girls. Everything I know I've learned (= stolen) from them and their long line of culinary-minded kin.

Thus, if I had to give one tip for throwing a big bash it would be to copy someone else. It's always easier in my opinion, and you know it's worked before. (Unlike Mr. Dub's proposed grilled cheese party: BYOC. Get it?)

Here are a few other tips I've learned from them and from my own hosting gigs, though this might be a big "duh" for some of you seasoned party peeps. However, if you ever read this blog and feel a tad insecure like me, here you go:

* Lots of food, little table - While your table will be crowded, an overflowing smorgasbord looks more impressive than a spartan spread, even if it's the same amount of food. If you are going for a modern look, you can still benefit from a smaller space; just organize food into tight rows.

* Plate up - Use tiered trays and cake stands to add height and interest to your spread. Easy.

* Personalized dishware = homemade - I'm all about convenience foods, especially with the gourmet variety now available at warehouse and grocery stores. The key is to plate them on something equally beautiful. Do not serve it out of a plastic container, or I will fight you.

* Pick your battles - Do NOT convince yourself you are going to try 10 new recipes for the big event. First, you'll freak out the night before and edit the list down, wasting a ton of groceries, and then Mr. Dub will give you that look. Second, you don't have the time or energy. Just pick a few "wow" items from your repertoire and supplement the rest with pre-made items and easy dishes.

* Ten percent rule - I totally stole this from the Gourmet Girls, who always plan for 10 percent more food than they think they need. (Understanding that typically one-third of your guest list won't show.) You'll probably go home with leftovers, but better than than seeing your guests stop by Taco Bell on the way out.

* Let it go - When it's time to party, party! You do want to be on top of refills, but don't be a slave to the kitchen. You did the work; you deserve to enjoy it. It's not worth it if you are counting the minutes until everyone leaves. (Unless it's your awkward friend who always talks about her ex-boyfriend -- from tenth grade. That's understandable.)

Baby Zee — by Guest Mom Laura Warner

As I mentioned in my intro, I prematurely delivered a daughter in February, who passed away momentarily due to a chromosome abnormality. Her death was not a surprise. A couple months into my pregnancy I began to experience extreme pain, bleeding and nausea. Early ultrasounds suggested the baby was fine. At my 17-week appointment, however, an ultrasound showed cystic masses in my placenta and swelling on the baby's brain. An amniocentesis confirmed our worst fears: I was suffering from a partial molar pregnancy, caused by a (very) bad egg. As a result, Baby Zee had an extra set of chromosomes and would pass away during pregnancy or soon after birth.

It was devastating, of course, but in a way it was very peaceful. It was a beautiful experience to know that I had been chosen to carry a unique soul. My only mission as her mother would be to give her a body, share my love and send her home. I was honored, and I was distraught.

Our doctors offered termination due to increased health risks, but that didn't feel right for us. Waiting for her die in utero was unbearable, but sending her away wasn't any better. After much prayer and contemplation, we decided to carry her as long as she would let me. Within minutes of that decision, I was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with preeclampsia. I would have to be induced to save my life, even though I was only 19 weeks along.

The doctors recommended a surgical removal, but Baby Zee asked for a traditional chance at life. They induced me in the early morning hours on February 4. Within hours, I began to hemorrhage severely. Ultimately, I received an emergency C-section and blood transfusion. My life was spared, as was Zee's. While I lay under anesthesia, Zee slipped away after taking a few shallow breaths. She lived.

The weeks that followed were bittersweet. I was empowered by my birth experience and thrilled to have pictures and mementos of my tiny little girl. At only six ounces, she fit in the palm of my hand, but all her miniature parts were perfect.

Since then, I've had many hard days. I feel sad others can't understand the loss of an unborn child. I feel sad that I don't have a 4-month-old baby to nurture at home. I feel frustrated that the pregnancy has caused ongoing health problems that keep me from trying again. But mostly I feel joy that I got to be her mother.

While most people have been understanding, some are so uncomfortable that I have to comfort them so they don't feel awkward. I don't mind doing it, but I know other people in my situation who are too fragile to bear that added burden. As a result, I'd like to share a few tips for someone who is mourning, especially the loss of an infant or unborn child:

1) Don't judge – Every situation is different. Don't speculate on what might have caused the death. Don't hypothesize why it happened to that particular person. Don't criticize them for how they decided to handle their medical care, funerals, etc. And never, ever critique their grief, even if you think they are overreacting. The only way to get better is to get all the hurting out. For some people, this takes a lifetime.

2) Don't minimize their loss – Don't tell them it was meant to be. Don't tell them to appreciate what they have. Don't tell them they are strong enough to handle it. Just listen. You don't have to make it better, because no words will change what happened. Just be supportive, sympathetic and available.

3) Don't avoid the subject – In the two weeks between diagnosis and delivery, my every thought was consumed by Zee; yet, many people who knew our situation didn't bring it up. I'm sure they thought I didn't want to talk about it, but they were wrong. I did, and I still do. Talking about Zee validates her existence. I love every opportunity I get to share her special life.

4)
Do show your love – Call, visit, mail a card, send a gift. Showing you care about our pain makes it hurt less. One of the best cards I received simply said, "I don't know what you are going through, but I do know this: you have always seemed like a happy person, so it hurts me to know you are suffering."

5) Do read about it – Knowing about their situation will help you understand them better. In my case, a partial molar pregnancy put me at risk to develop placental cancer. I had to get weekly blood draws to ensure I wasn't growing malignant masses. Most people assumed I was better, but close friends continued to check on my health.

Enough lecturing! How about some pretty things? Following Zee's birth, I received a tremendous amount of cards and packages. One friend sent me candy, magazines and some cozy pajamas. (Perfect.) Another friend sent me a gorgeous gold necklace from Anthropologie adorned with the word "February" and a small amethyst. My sister made me a stamped necklace with both my daughters' names and a birth announcement for our memory box.

Here are some other bereavement gifts ideas:

1) A box - Most hospitals provide a free box for mementos, but it's usually flimsy. A special box, like these padded leather ones by Inside Avenue, is a great way to hold all the pictures, kind notes and memories of their little one. Our memory box for Zee is pictured at the top of this post.

2) A blanket - If you know someone who is expecting infant loss, a small blanket like this mini lovey from Yatoil's Esty shop is a perfect gift. They can use the blanket to hold the baby after birth, then save it as a keepsake or include it in the burial services.

3) A necklace - Most mourning moms want a daily reminder of their child, especially in the weeks following their passing. A delicate necklace like the J'taime necklace by Urban Outfitters is a great way to keep their memory close. Plus, it's just a chic accessory.

4) A letter - A written letter is great, but so is a letter hanging for their home, like these from Anthropologie. Buy the first initial of the baby's name as a subtle memorial. (We have a Z hanging in our house.)

5) (Not pictured) A hug.

Random Giveaway — Lisa Leonard Jewelry

A great Giveaway today. Three beautiful necklaces for three beautiful winners. From everyone's favorite stamped jewelry shop, Lisa Leonard Designs. You know the drill — get those comments in asap and you could be one of the lucky three.

This pretty little bird-y creation is the necklace up for grabs. It's called the Sweet Simple Bird Necklace and it really is adorable. A sterling silver disc, one and 1/4 inches across, is hand-stamped with a little birdie sitting on a branch. A cream freshwater pearl makes a perfect accent. Strung on 18" sterling ball chain. And remember — three of these lovelies will go to three lucky winners.

The following aren't up for grabs in this Giveaway, but how can I visit Lisa Leonard's site without sharing some of my other favorites from her collection:

All of Lisa's designs are quite wonderful, but I think the spoons may be my very favorite. So simple and elegant. Very chic. Growing up, my mom kept a drawer full of tiny keepsakes from when we were babies, along with other little heirlooms. As children, we loved getting a peek inside that drawer. I think it would be a wonderful tradition to have a spoon made for each child. You could frame the spoon in a handsome little shadow box — along with a photo of the baby eating their first solid food using the very same utensil.
A spoon would make a wonderful gift for that mom who seems to have everything she needs.

Happy commenting. Thank you Lisa Leonard Designs!

Isabella Oliver

Yesterday I went to a breakfast preview of Isabella Oliver's Spring 2009 line at the Soho House. It made me want to be pregnant again. For reals. I didn't discover Isabella Oliver until a few weeks after Betty was born, so I never got the chance to wear the line. But I think the clothes are lovely — all about ruching and wrapping — my two favorite maternity looks.

The Spring line isn't online yet (luckily there are lots of cozy, fall/winter items like the ones pictured above), but watch for it in the next few months.

Sketchbook: Never Leave Home Without It — By Guest Mom Cathe Holden

As a graphic designer I have sketched and thumbnailed thousands of ideas over the years relating to client projects. Since becoming a parent I find my sketchbooks now overflowing with birthday cake and invitation designs, sketches of my children, ideas for unique products that are sure to make me millions (...lots of those), lists, quotes & scripture that hold special meaning, and many other things that pop into my head on a daily basis. Occasionally I will revisit past sketchbooks to find myself in different chapters of parenthood.

The turning point page is the one with tiny sketches of all the office furniture from my downtown design firm. This page takes me back 13 years ago when I made the decision to leave a corporate life and become a work-at-home mom. It’s a sketch of office furniture that I had in my office with my husband’s handwriting in the measurements. He helped me figure out what would fit in my new home-office in the garage, and what had to go. A bittersweet time then, but a blessing many times over.

I have a preference for large spiral-bound sketchbooks, found at most craft and art supply stores, for business and home. Moleskine blank journals are a favorite for keeping in my purse and car to log my thoughts on the go. Sketchbooks are my form of journaling life, one doodle at a time.

Random Giveaway — Back to School with Kayce Hughes

Another Giveaway today. A really good one. Winner's choice. Something for Mom. Something for child. Beautiful. And just in time for the upcoming change of seasons. For Back to School. Sound good? It is good. Very good. And it's sponsored by the independent clothing line Kayce Hughes.

Here's the dealio. Leave a comment to enter. Any comment. And one lucky winner will be randomly chosen to win two things: any item of children's clothing from Kayce Hughes. And. Any item of women's clothing from Kayce Hughes. Perfect. Something to freshen up your wardrobe and something fun for your child as well. And you get to choose what those items should be.

The Kayce Hughes line is perfectly proportioned, finely constructed, and completely wearable. And you can count on it's wearability. Because Kayce behind Kayce Hughes is a mother of 7. For reals. She absolutely know what it means to get dressed in the morning as a mother. I've met her (at the recent children's club show) and she is beautiful and gracious and, as we can see from her clothing line, very talented.

So start dreaming about what you'll pick out for yourself. Possibly the super adaptable Wrap Skirt, available in 4 colors. Or the crisp white Ruffled Top in swiss dot, that you'll want to wear every single day.

And what you'll pick for your child. Maybe the Daisy Dress in palm green (such a wonderful silhouette!). Or the cozy red Pea Coat lined with fleece.

Have fun browsing their site — pondering over the classic lines, the beautiful fabrics, the quality — and daydreaming a bit about how cute you'll look in your new clothes. Thank you Kayce Hughes!

What to Wear

15-year-old Camille. She is more fashionable as a high school student than I will ever be.

Is this a new phenomenon? I've seen two different links on kirtsy, where two different women (actually, one is 15, does that count as a woman?) take a photo of their outfits each day and showcase them on their blogs.

One is called What I Wore Today, written by a woman named Kasmira in Cincinnati, and the other is written by Camille in Suburbia writing at Childhood Flames.

Both have very different styles — and neither one shares my style exactly, but it's not about that. I just love the whole idea. Real outfits on real people. The clothes they decide to put on each day. So fascinating. It's especially appreciated by me because although they both love fashion, it's not as if they have unlimited clothes budgets — they work with what they have. A good reminder.

Are there more of these daily outfit blogs out there? I could get obsessed.

M Lab

With the exception of perfume, I don't think I've ever owned any bath or beauty product that would qualify as expensive. So when M Lab offered to send me samples of their $185-a-container body lotion, I was like, Heck Yes. Because I was totally curious to see if there's a difference in quality compared to the stuff I normally use.

I finished using up the samples this morning. And the lotion really was fabulous. It went on like velvet. It smelled clean and not-perfumey. And my skin felt great. I can only assume the rest of their products are as lovely.

If I ever become a person that can drop $185 on lotion, I can't wait to pick some up.

I Heart My New Bag

During our trip out west, my brother-in-law Dell, gave me this amazing carry-all — fashioned from coffee bean sacks and picked up on his recent trip to Guatemala. The interior and handles are lined with satin to prevent the very chic burlap from shedding on the contents. I adore this bag.

Dell: Cierra asked me to pick one up for her on my last trip. So I brought home two just in case.

Me: Just so you know, if Cierra requests anything else, I want one too.

Thank you to Dell. And thank you to Cierra (my stylish niece).

5-Minute Make-Up — by Guest Mom Jane Maynard

I like looking nice, doing makeup, hair, all that girly stuff. But I usually have just enough time to throw my hair into a ponytail and run out the door. Needless to say I have mastered the art of 5-minute makeup. And I love the products I use, so here you go!

Step 1: Conceal
The biggest reason I put any makeup on in the first place is to cover up red spots/blemishes and make myself look less tired. There are a few products I use for this “conceal” step that do just that.

1. Concealer. Bare Escentuals Bisque Multi-tasker (you’ll use a different color than bisque if your skin is darker than mine) with the Bare Escentuals Concealer Brush. I apply the multi-tasker directly to my trouble spots and then blend out with the brush. Using a brush is key with concealer. It’s worth the extra investment.

2. Loose Powder or Bronzer. I use a light bronzer. Just a little bit all over to blend the rest of my face in with the spots I’ve concealed (I apply a little more to the temple/top of my cheek bone area). My favorite bronzer is from Stila. If you don’t want any sparkle, just get a loose powder 2 shades darker than your skin. If you don’t want to bronze, just use a loose powder matched to your skin tone.

3. Cream concealer on eyes. This is my FAVORITE makeup trick. I always apply a cream concealer or foundation (whatever I happen to have on hand) to my eyelids. It covers up all those little veins, makes you look more awake, and helps eye shadow go on smoothly and stay put. When I apply, I spread a little to under my eyes as well.

Step 2: Cheeks & Eyes

1. The Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick is the best thing ever. I use the the Bronze Shimmer brick for my cheeks and eyes. Just brush a bit on my cheeks (right on the apples and brush straight back towards the tops of your ears). On my eyes, I use the darkest shade in my crease, the lightest shade right under my brow, and the shade closest to the lightest shade on the lid. Here’s a picture of my well-loved Shimmer Brick to give you an idea of what I’m talking about.

Normally I stop here, but if I want to look even more awake, I will throw on some mascara. But I HATE mascara, so that hardly ever happens. When I do wear it, my favorite is the Everything Mascara by Bobbi Brown.

Oh, and I do curl my eyelashes. Make sure you start curling at the base of the lash, and then curl it about three times, moving up the lash. If you just curl once near the base, you’ll get a funny lash crease.

Step 3: Lips

I almost always skip step 3. But my favorite quick lip trick is the Shimmer Stick from Origins. It doubles as a pencil & lipstick, doesn’t feel to heavy on and looks great. Lucky Penny is my favorite color.

Please feel free to share your favorite makeup trick or product!

10 Minutes a Day — by Guest Mom Jane Maynard

A few months ago, I had a wonderful opportunity to attend a private book signing with Maria Shriver thanks to Silicon Valley Moms Blog. Maria spoke with us about her new book Just Who Will You Be? and then signed our books and spoke with us each individually. You can read more about my experience here, but I will quickly say that it was AWESOME. I seriously came home giddy that night…just ask Nate.

One of the biggest things that hit me from the book and that evening with Maria Shriver was this: Take 10 minutes each day for yourself, alone. Do anything you want in those 10 minutes, but make sure you take them. I love this sage advice and it is something I try to remember each day.

It’s easier for some of us to take this daily 10 minutes than others, whether due to time contraints or personality traits. Regardless, EVERYONE should make an effort to do this, especially you busy moms out there. Maria told us that one morning recently her 10 minutes was just sitting on her closet floor alone. See, it really can be anytime anywhere!

Here are a few things I do to find alone time during the day:

- Lunch. I eat my lunch alone every day. Sometimes that means I eat super early or super late, depending on nap schedules. But if I don’t have lunch alone, by the time Nate comes home at night I am fit to be tied. Seriously.

- I just planted my first garden. It’s a simple perennial flower garden with a blueberry bush. Nothing fancy. I thought I would hate having to tend to my garden each day, but I’ve found it to be a relaxing time. More often than not, Cate is helping me, and those times are fun. But when I am alone watering it is a great time for pondering and relaxing.

- Take a bath. Okay, friends, you have to go buy this bath pillow. I found it at Cost Plus World Market recently and used it for the first time last week. I thought I might never get out of the tub. It ROCKS, in a calm and relaxing way of course.

- Other favorites of mine: give myself a facial, read books, read my magazines that go untouched month after month.

Promise me you’ll take Maria’s advice to heart. Refueling your inner self is key. Not only will you be able to give more to the people and activities you love, but you’ll simply be happier.
Let’s end with having you all share your techniques or favorite ways to spend 10 minutes alone each day.

Random Giveaway — Tretorn Shoes for the Family

It's the 4th of July tomorrow. Which is wonderful. I LOVE July 4th! And I think we should celebrate our freedom with some new shoes. Because being able to walk around — when you want, where you want, in whatever shoes you want — is a lovely way to model independence. So how about new shoes for the whole family? A pair for Dad. A pair for Mom. And a pair for your child. All sponsored by Tretorn!

That's right. The winner will receive 3 pairs of shoes from Tretorn. And the winner gets to pick which pairs and which sizes. And it's going to be kind of a big job choosing those 3 pairs of shoes. Because Tretorn carries all sorts of really good-looking options. Check out the men's shoes. And the women's line. And the adorable children's sneakers and boots.

Why is Tretorn feeling so generous and All-American? Well. It's because in addition to the 4th of July, they are also celebrating the opening of their new shop in SoHo — yay Tretorn! It's located on 150 Spring Street, and I for one am dying to pay it a visit. If only so I can see this lovely pair of boots in person.

Thank you Tretorn!

Target Dresses

Three versatile dresses at Target that caught my eye. The flattering, knit dress by Mossimo, $20. The super-sweet smocked, cap-sleeve dress by Mossimo, $23. And the classic Andrea wrap dress by Isaac Mizrahi, $45.

Cute right? Although I don't think my cleavage could sustain the one on the left — I'd have to wear it with another layer.

ASk Design Mom Week: Headbands

Ask Design Mom Question:
Hi Gabrielle! I have a question for you. We will be going camping soon with some friends and while I don't mind being outdoors and getting down and dirty, I'd like something cute to hold my too-short-for-a-ponytail hair back, especially since I don't plan on bringing a hair dryer on a camping trip! Do you know of any cute hair scarves or cloth headbands?
— Thanks! Katerina

Design Mom Answer:
First of all, your camping trip sounds like the perfect summer adventure. I'm sure you'll have a great time! My preferred camping head gear is a classic red bandana. Good-looking. Easy to spot if I'm hiking with others. Absorbent for mopping up perspiration on a hot day. And it can work as a sling in a pinch. But if you're looking for something beyond a bandana, here are two suggestions.

I recently received an email about a just-launched hair product called Knot Heads that promises to work with all hair lengths in all sorts of interesting ways. You can check it out (including demo videos) here. And. I've heard rave reviews about Pinkbench head bands. Adjustable to fit your head with a vow to "stay on and not hurt". Sounds good to me!

How do you handle "camp hair" Design Mom Readers?

Beautiful pieces — with clear architectural inspiration. I especially loved the bracelets. (I am all about bracelets these days.)

This Giveaway features one of the favorite items we discuss around here: pretty paper. With your name on it. The winner will receive $200 worth of paper goods. From the hip shop Paper & Ink Studio.

The prize includes 75 Flat Notecards — personalized with your name — and accompanied by 75 hand-lined envelopes. Size: A2 (5.5"x4.25"). Printed on velvet texture 80 pound cardstock, with rounded corners. Strawberry envelopes hand-lined with a pretty pink floral pattern. Oh my. Hand-lined envelopes always make me swoon.

Additionally, the winner will receive 100 Call Me Cards — personalized with her name and info. Available in lots of good-looking designs. And won't you feel all special when someone asks for your email address and you whip out one of these?

What is it about pretty paper anyway? I'm sure it has something to do with how good a heavy, elegant, paper stock feels in your hand after an afternoon of email and internet. You just can't beat a hand-written note or a pretty little calling card. Mary Carstens, the designer behind Paper & Ink Studio, sure knows how to keep paper simple and chic and really elegant.

Thank you Paper & Ink!

Mothers Day 2008 Giveaway #14 — Necklace and Earrings from Darleen Meier

[ Congratulations to Amira who said, "how very nice!" You're the big winner of this Giveaway! Please send me an email at the address listed on my blog and I'll put you in touch with the sponsor. ]

It's Friday. The last day of Mothers Day Giveaway Week at Design Mom. I've got four Giveaways to post! The first being jewelry. Really pretty jewelry from Darleen Meier. I'm going to show you three different combinations of necklace and earrings. You'll want to study them well. Because the winner gets to pick her favorite combo!!

First up: Edith. The earrings are clusters of semi-precious stones which hang above sterling silver rings. The necklace is a coin-shaped pearl that hangs from a cubic zircon. Isn't that pearl just stunning?

Next, let me introduce you to: Regan. The earrings are made out of brushed vermeil, moss aquamarine and rough pearl stone. The necklace is made with a free-forming brushed vermeil, gold-filled chain and a cluster of semi-precious stones. How funky cool is the big gold shape on the necklace? Love it!

Third, take a look at: Kayla.
earrings are made with twisted gold-filled wire that are coiled in the form of a flower. Apatite briolette. Charm necklace has a gold-filled round disc, leaflet, natural zircon briolette and pearl. Those earrings are too delicate to be real. So pretty.

Isn't this a great Giveaway? I love when there's a choice. I start imagining which one I'd pick. What I'd wear it with. How it would sparkle on my neck line. And I love Darleen Meier's style. I think it's fabulous that she names her designs after family and friends. I'll bet I would like "Edith" in real life — because I sure like the jewelry that was named after her.

When you visit her site, don't miss her baby jewelry. Really beautiful stuff. My favorite is the little, tiny, Lexie bracelet.

Thank you Darleen Meier!

Mothers Day 2008 Giveaway #13 — Three Bags from Aster + Sage

[ Congratulations to Becky who said, "LOVE LOVE LOVE them! Since gone are the diaper bag days, what a way to spice up my own "haul-around"! I hope I win, then I don't have to add to my mom's day would-love list!" You're the big winner of this Giveaway! Please send me an email at the address listed on my blog and I'll put you in touch with the sponsor. ]

And now it's Thursday night. Which means I should probably be watching 30 Rock. Which is currently the funniest show on television. But I promised to get up one more Giveaway today. And I couldn't get it posted until right this minute, because there was a fancy pantsy dance recital for my Olive this evening. For the record, dance recitals always beat out Giveaways.

But this Giveaway is totally worth the wait. And even though I'm posting it so late, you'll still get a full 24-hours to enter. For the record, you will so want to enter this Giveaway. Because there are three fantastic items up for grabs from one of my very favorite accessory lines Aster + Sage! Here's all the yummy details:

One lucky lady will receive the Charlotte tote bag — in any of the 3 great colors. It's giant and canvas and totally stylish. Perfect for holding the contents of your entire household as you head out the door this summer. You should also know that the Charlotte stands upright so it's easy to fill and wipes clean in a jiffy. For the record, Linda Yesline, the mother who designs the Aster + Sage line, uses it ALL the time.

Plus, the winner will also take home the super cool Carolyn makeup bag. Available in six up-to-date color combinations and sized exactly right. For the record, if you're not using a good-looking make-up bag, it might be time to upgrade. A great bag makes the whole make-up experience much more enjoyable.

And. Just to top things off and make this an extra-awesome Giveaway, the winner will receive the Angie phone/ipod case as well! It has an outer pocket, a cute dog-leash style strap, and it's large enough to fit a blackberry. For the record, it's so cute that you'll look for excuses to pull your phone/ipod out of your bag — just to show off your Angie case.

If you've been reading my blog for awhile, you probably already know I'm a big fan of Aster + Sage. I love the style behind the line. I love the philosophy. I loved meeting Linda at the Gift Show and seeing her darling baby. For the record, Aster + Sage rocks!!

Thank you Aster + Sage!

10) christel who said, "Great magazine. My coworker would also love this. Thanks"

You're the big winners of this Giveaway! Please send me an email at the address listed on my blog and I'll put you in touch with the sponsor. ]

Is it just me or do we have some recurring themes going on this week? Jewelry. Clothing. Stationery. And magazine subscriptions! Awesome. Magazines are like getting a new gift every time the latest issue shows up in your mailbox. Lucky for you — this Giveaway will have ten (yes ten!) winners. Ten happy women will receive a year-long subscription to Eliza magazine.

What's Eliza Magazine? Well. It's your new favorite fashion tabloid. That's what. Best part? The stunning photography. Second best part? Eliza Magazine promises to never title an article: "the sexual secrets to make him want you." Or anything even remotely close to that. (Hooray!)

But you will find great articles on Fashion, Beauty, Health, Entertainment and Lifestyle. And no covers that you'll need to hide from your children. My particular favorite, is their series on the history of the great fashion houses — they've covered four so far, including Gucci and Chanel. Fabulous.

I love the description on their about page: "ELIZA magazine brings you "Fashion without Fiction." We are realistic about everyday women's price points, showcasing pieces that are worth the big price tags and discovering deals at your local department stores that are just as hip. We are realistic about women's bodies: we don't retouch bodies, and we mix real women and professional models. We are realistic about women's interests, featuring fashion and beauty information, current issues, and real life problem solving, all while keeping perspective on what's really important in life." Sounds just right to me.

If you don't win, no stress. You can pick up your own quarterly subscription here.

Thank you to Eliza Magazine.

Mothers Day 2008 Giveaway #9 — Pendant Necklace from SuperHero Designs

[ Congratulations to Mindful Mamma who said, "Wearing one of her necklaces would make me feel like a superhero for sure!" You're the big winner of this Giveaway! Please send me an email at the address listed on my blog and I'll put you in touch with the sponsor. ]

It's lucky Giveaway #9. And it involves a Superhero. And jewelry. So really, you should probably start commenting before you even know exactly what it is. Because, come on, what more do you need to know? Oh alright. I'm going to tell you more. Because it's good stuff. And you'll love the details. The prize for Giveaway #9 is a pendant Necklace from SuperHero Designs!!

Mostly likely, you are already a fan of the
gorgeous SuperHero line of beaded necklaces designed by Andrea Scher. You may have noticed them when they were featured earlier here and here. Or, if you've attended BlogHer you've likely seen several — they are totally the hot item at BlogHer. Or again, if your name is Ben Blair, you may recognize them because hopefully you've been browsing the SuperHero site this week. (I've never made a Mother's Day request before, but I would really like a SuperHero necklace this year. I'm just saying.)

But there's something new going down at SuperHero Designs. It's not only about the beads anymore. There is now a pendant option. For the first time ever. And it's beautiful. And lovely. And so of course I was giddy to showcase the new pendant here and feature it as a Giveaway prize. Look what you could win:

Gorgeous right? Made of matte finish sterling silver with a bulls eye on the front and the word "superhero" engraved on the back. Andrea calls it "a little treasure for the wearer, like a whisper in her ear. Whenever she feels she needs a boost she can turn it over and read her little love note." Ummm. What else is there to say?

Thank you to SuperHero Designs!

Mothers Day 2008 Giveaway #8 — Skirt and Two Tops from Cool Jane Imports

[ Congratulations to Isabel who said, "Oh my goodness, these are pretty. The colors are so vibrant!" You're the big winner of this Giveaway! Please send me an email at the address listed on my blog and I'll put you in touch with the sponsor. ]

Day number three! Yay for Giveaways! Quick note: Last night, I listed winners of Monday's Giveaways at the top of each Giveaway post. Feel free to scroll down to see if you won. I'll list Tuesday's winners tonight. And so forth. And so on.

And now. On to Giveaway #8. How about some more clothes? Because new clothes do wonders for how you feel walking out of the house — or walking around the house. Put your thinking caps on for this one. When you win, you'll get to pick the skirt of your choice, plus two tops of your choice, from Cool Jane Imports!!

I love these versatile 4 season skirts. Lightweight enough to take you through the spring and summer. Heavy enough to pair with tights or sweaters through the fall and winter. Festive enough to wear at a New Year's Party. Or you could dress it down with flip flops and wear it to the pool. Plus the color choices always make me smile. And you get to pick whichever color you like!

And don't forget the tops. You get to pick two. They're flattering, feminine and beautiful. They look great with the featured skirts (obviously) but would also be good looking with jeans and heels or a fluttery, a-line number. Both the tops and skirts are made from a Southeast Asian raw silk blend. The blend turns traditional raw silk (which is luxurious, but tears and wrinkles easily, is difficult to care for, and is expensive) into a still gorgeous, but stronger, easier-to-work-with material that's also affordable.

These are the kind of smart pieces that keep a wardrobe interesting. They're authentic — you can't pick them up at the Gap — and they're very flexible. You'll be surprised how often you want to pull them on.

Thank you to Cool Jane Imports!

Mothers Day 2008 Giveaway #7 — Necklace by Jacqueline Sanchez

[ Congratulations to Wesley's Mom who said, "This would be perfect compensation for all of the legos I have stepped on in the last 15 years!!" You're the big winner of this Giveaway! Please send me an email at the address listed on my blog and I'll put you in touch with the sponsor. ]

More jewelry for Giveaway #7! Because really, I can't get enough. It's like there's a jewelry renaissance going on out there and I'm determined to take part. You can take part as well. Just leave a comment on this post and you could win this gorgeous and completely playful necklace from Jacqueline Sanchez.

The necklace features a sterling silver pendant with plastic building piece and a 3pt diamond. Hung from a rubber cord. Retail price $250.00. Extra fun: you get to pick the color. Red, green, turquoise, white, navy. Or any other color that Ms. Sanchez has available.

Is there another piece of jewelry that calls out Motherhood as clearly? Lego pieces have been a staple of my every day life for the last decade. They symbolize all sorts of things for me. The daily pick-up-and-put-away that happens in any house with children. The time spent playing together, making something, taking something apart. The creativity and imagination that are part and parcel of being a child — it's amazing what children create with these little squares of plastic.

I love the idea of wearing a lego piece — all grown up with a diamond of course — as a celebration of Motherhood. With the same thinking, last year, I gave Ben Blair a pair of red lego cufflinks from Jaqueline's Young at Heart Collection. He loves them. They're good looking, and draw just the right amount of attention. Her lego designs are available as rings and bracelets too.

Thank you to Jacqueline Sanchez!

I've got an extra good Giveaway to start off with today. Extra good because there are five winners. Have you heard of Seeing the Everyday? Go ahead and get familiar with this fine publication, because five of you will be winning subscriptions. Yay!

What you need to know:
Seeing the Everyday is gorgeous. It's a newly launched magazine filled with beautiful writing and beautiful photography. And it's whole purpose is to bring needed attention to the importance of parenting. Seeing the Everyday aims to cover the "in-between" moments of parenthood. The non-events that actually make up the bulk of the act of parenting. To shed light on how important these small moments are.

If you're looking for a Mothers Day gift that keeps on giving, try a subscription to Seeing the Everyday. You'll get four inspiring issues, once each quarter — each issue completely ad free. (I'm not kidding. There are no ads. None.) And you'll come away from reading each one with new energy and resolve to be a better parent and to appreciate the small moments.

Send an email to your husband right now with the subscription info. He'll feel like a hero every time an issue arrives and you shower him with thanks for this most thoughtful gift.

Thank you to Seeing the Everyday.

[ Congratulations to Shauna who said, "Gorgeous, inside and out!" You're the big winner of this Giveaway! Please send me an email at the address listed on my blog and I'll put you in touch with the sponsor. ]

Fantastic! Giveaway number #3 is a hot one. You are going to love it. Because it's an entire basket full of goodies. And who doesn't love a basket full of goodies? Nobody. In fact, I'm quite sure that it's the propensity of people to love baskets full of treasure that inspired Lisa to start her lovely company, Nest Gift Baskets.

The winner of this Giveaway #3 will have to make a choice. Does she prefer the Gardener's Eden basket? A gathering basket filled with treats like a “Trake” gardening tool, tea towel, bug spray, gardener’s soap with brush, Fox Gloves, and seed packets.

Or would she rather receive the Do Not Disturb basket? A darling chicken wire container brimming with La Lavande bath gel, lotion, soap & salts, candle — even a Do Not Disturb sign.

How will she ever choose between the two?

Both baskets are gorgeous of course. And either would be happily received by pretty much any woman I know. Happily, they are reflective of all the quality and creative gift baskets available at Nest. Definitely take a peek at their inspired offerings and find the perfect basket for your own mom.

Thanks to Nest Gift Baskets.

Random Giveaway — Put Some Spring in Your Step

Aren't you itching for a Giveaway? I totally am. Spring Fever or something. So let's do it. How about a set of three pretties for Mom and a set of three pretties for baby? A little something to put some spring in your step. Because in my neck of the woods, the blossoms are on the trees and it's time to celebrate the fact that Spring has Sprung. Take a look at what one lucky winner will receive:

The Fleur Collection from My Sunset Road. retail value: $175.00
Earrings. Necklace. Ring. Gorgeous. What's the saying — April showers bring May flowers? Well it looks like the flowers arrived a bit early this year in the form of these gorgeous pieces. Don't they feel just perfect for Spring? My Sunset Road, and Courtney, the artist behind the jewelry, has such a fantastic aesthetic. The line is modern. But it feels totally handcrafted and organic. I love checking the site from time to time just to see what's new — so inspiring!

A new baby gift set from Toby & Rei. retail value: $90.00
This luscious eco-minded gift set includes a baby blanket, a onesie and a matching hat. For the blankets (made from a super-soft bamboo knit), choose from five gorgeous colors — natural, celery, pebble gray, chocolate and modern orange. For the onesie and hat, choose from four different cute graphics — robot, elephant, modern flowers and shark . I'm such a fan of Toby and Rei. Their knits blankets are the thickest and coziest I've seen. I sent my sister Jordan some of their lovely goods when Mr. Moses was born.

Now isn't this Giveaway just the perfect way to end the work week? A treat for you and a treat for baby. No baby? Then a treat for you and treat for your dear expectant friend's baby. Have fun commenting. And if you've got weather that's as good as the weather here in New York, I hope you get the chance to get out this weekend and enjoy it!

More Swimsuits

Still swimsuit hunting. I've been all about the tankinis for the last few summers, but I'm feeling the one piece this year. I am in love with this ruffle-y one by Juicy Couture. It's pricey and would be a complete splurge for me, but isn't it gorgeous? I prefer it in blue, but am including the pink shot so you can see what the back looks like. This is the best modern take on a retro swimsuit I've seen. And all that ruching has to be so slimming.

I've tried on this custom one from Lands' End and it is beautiful. Very well-made (and good detailing) with fantastic fabric that keeps my tummy in check. And I love the greek-maze-like pattern — less boring than basic black, but doesn't draw too much attention. Possibly more low-cut than I want, but I'm so flat chested it hardly matters — there's nothing to see.

I'll let you know what else I find.

Haulina Pumps

Am I allowed to fall in love with shoes from the Jessica Simpson line? Because the Haulina Pump is fully tempting me. I love that the polka-dots are cut out — it makes them feel so summery. Nice work Ms. Simpson. (Note: they're on sale so size options are dwindling.)

Plus-Size Maternity Wear: What's Out There? — by Guest Mom Lindsey Rose Johnson

(image via Flickr)

As a plus-size pregnant mom, I've had my share of troubles finding flattering, cute maternity clothes. Do they exist?
Well, yes and no. I don't think clothing manufacturers are all the way there yet. I can't even count the hours I've spent looking. You've got everything from stores like Gap and Old Navy to independent companies selling tent dresses. I want to see other major clothing manufacturers make cute, stylish clothes for us bigger gals.

What's true is that every woman whether Size 0 or Size 24, wants to look and feel beautiful, especially during those long 9 months of pregnancy.

For me, I've found that I like simple, classic pieces that I can use casually or when I need to dress up. I have especially loved buying skirts with a drawstring waist. I have two linen skirts I have worn through all my pregnancies that are comfortable and allow for growth. (And bonus — they've lasted through many washes.)

I really like this maternity shirt from Old Navy, available up to XXL. Clean lines, but room for a belly. And not too low-cut, a problem I see all the time in plus-size maternity wear.

I've been able to get away with not buying tent dresses by buying a size or two larger than my pre-pregnancy size. I find I can usually wear those clothes for nine months and a little while afterwards. Some plus-sized clothing manufacturers make their pants with elastic waist bands — that comes in handy.

This shirt from Liz Claiborne, though not maternity, would work for awhile to give an expanding tummy extra room, while still being stylish. And I think it's darling. (It also comes in dark gray.)

Another option is the
BellaBand, which I'm sure every pregnant woman knows about. I'm getting ready to order a few for myself now that I'm starting to enter the bigger belly stage. BellaBands range in size from 0 to 24+.

Other sources for plus-size pregnant moms:

-Gap and Old Navy (also check out the plus-size section) offer maternity clothes up to size 20.
-Ann Taylor Loft Maternity just added more sizes and has darling clothes up to size 18/XXL. -Plusmommaternity.com: Plus size maternity tops. Sizes XL - 6X.

Patterned Swim Wear

So many pretty patterns and colors in the swimwear at Athleta. And everything cut kind of sporty and athletic — lots of T-backs and bottoms with decent coverage. In another life, I plan to be someone who enjoys sports.

Is it time to think swimwear already? I'm on the hunt. I'll share my best finds as I find them. . .

Seeing the Everyday

There's a newly launched magazine that has completely hit a soft spot for me. Seeing the Everyday.

First of all, it's gorgeous. (And you know I have kind of an obnoxious why-bother? attitude about anything poorly designed.) The photography is excellent. The layouts are well thought out. The paper has a lovely feel. It's a pleasure to hold and read.

Second, the concept is unlike anything I've seen out there on the magazine racks. And it is needed. And at the end of the day, really important. Seeing the Everyday aims to cover the "in-between" moments of parenthood. The non-events that actually make up the bulk of the act of parenting. To shed light on how important these small moments are.

I found the stories and articles authentic and compelling — and loved them for being affirming and positive without being patronizing. I was wiping the tears right and left as I read cover to cover (I'm not kidding when I say it hit a soft spot with me). If it celebrates parenthood and families I can typically be counted as a fan. I'm fully aware that parenting is the most important and meaningful thing most of us will do in our lifetime. It is always good for me to be reminded that the birthday parties and big events aren't any more important than the down days — and probably much less important.

Lastly, Seeing the Everyday is ad free. As in sans ads. As in there aren't any advertisements. No really. (And of course, this is partly why it's so gorgeous.) Consider how lovely that is. Every page is content. Every page is beautiful. How to get one? Via internet of course. Sign up for your subscription here. If you check it out, I'd love to hear what you think.

Glamorous Girl Accessories

Pretty hair adornments at Glamorous Girl's Etsy shop. Betty's bangs are in her face and I am constantly acquiring barrettes and hair pins as I attempt to let them grow. There are so many cute options — I can't help but find things for me as well : ). Too fun.

Charmed

How delightful are these lovely pieces from Etsy shop Charmed — and very reasonably priced as well. My good Mother-in-law, Julia, sent some great photos of Ben as a child — they're kind of aged and yellowed. They'd be perfect for this kind of thing.

Random Giveaway — Bun in the Oven

There are many, many pregnant women out there. Having babies is clearly all the rage. And why shouldn't it be? Learning to be a good mom is very likely the best thing that will ever happen to you. But. Except for a very, very, very few (and lucky) women, pregnancy is difficult. And fat. And nauseating. And bladder squeezing. And far too emotional.

So. To help us keep focused on how amazingly wonderful pregnancy actually is, how about a Giveaway Prize Package full of stuff that's just for Moms — expectant Moms. No baby booties. No rattles. Just cool pregnant stuff for Moms-to-be. So if you're pregnant. Or you know someone who is pregnant. Get your comments in now for the delicious Bun in the Oven Giveaway! Here's what one lucky winner will receive:

Nine Time Three Kit. retail value: $360.00
Back in December I discovered Nine Times Three (or Neunmaldrei in German) and fell in love with the concept: a maternity wardrobe consisting of only 3 pieces. Three pieces that are so well designed and so well made that you'll wear them all nine months. A skirt. A pant. A top. The photography on the site is gorgeous and the story behind the line is brilliant — the designer has been pregnant 5 times and knows exactly what works. In fact, during her last pregnancy, she wore only the Neunmaldrei Kit just to make sure it was perfect. And it was.

Happy Baby, Healthy Mom Pregnancy Journal. retail value $18.95
Such a cute book! Spiral bound inside a hard cover with an elastic closure. You are growing a whole human being inside that belly of yours. Of course you want to use the best building materials possible.
This journal will help you create a week-to-week plan for staying healthy during pregnancy and the postpartum months. It includes tips about healthy eating for two, keeping fit, and relieving discomfort. Best of all, it also provides prompts and writing space for capturing your thoughts as your belly grows. Journaling has been proved to be a huge stress reliever — just what you need during this life-changing time.

25 Shower Invitations or 50 Personalized
Note cards from the Hicks Paper Collection.
retail value $79.00
I recently posted about the lovely work in the Hicks line. Designed by Sarah Hicks Malone (of Martha Stewart fame). Gorgeous illustrations. Casual, yet refined designs. The winner will get to pick either 25 invitations or 50 personalized notecards. That means, when your dear, dear friend wants to throw you a shower you can graciously say: yes. thank you. and here's where to order the complimentary invitations. Not having a baby shower? You'll still likely to be showered with gifts and luckily, you'll have darling personalized notecards on which to write your thank you notes.

Three Blush Undershirts. retail value: $45.00
I say "undershirts" but technically, they're topless undershirts. I don't know if you've ever tried these, but they will stretch your maternity wardrobe like nothing else. In great colors. Cute patterns. The winner gets to picks her favorite three. Here are tips on how to wear the tops from their site: During pregnancy, you can keep the wardrobe you already have and use the topless undershirt to help cover your belly as your shirts start to ride up. If you are at the stage where you are unbuttoning the top of your pants, use the undershirt single layered or doubled over to help hold them up and hide your exposure! This way you can wear the jeans you already have before having to wear maternity ones. If you are planning to nurse, continue to wear the undershirt so you can lift your shirt without exposing your tummy and back.

Don't all the goodies (over $500 worth!) get you more excited to be pregnant? As if pregnancy wasn't exciting enough as it is. And one more thing, if you hate the term "bun in the oven" my apologies. It's lunchtime as I write this and I'm craving a cinnamon roll.

Thank you to the amazing pregnancy supporting sponsors!

Finding Time and Energy — by Sister Megan

I recently had baby number two — just last November, and I am having to relearn how to manage life. The thing I am having the hardest time figuring out is how to fit in exercise. I have been a runner for most of my life and enjoy being out and about so I'm determined to find a good solution.

With my first baby I figured out that I could workout at home while he napped. That was wonderful! I got some good workout videos and dropped the weight pretty quickly. Now that I am ready to workout again I am trying to figure out what works best with two little ones. Here are some things that I have come up with.
1) Join a gym.
I have a pass to the YMCA. They have a wonderful day care and it is now included in our membership. It is a great way to get back into shape. I love the classes.

But for me, there are a few drawbacks:
-I have to get 3 people ready and out the door at a certain time if I want to make one of the group classes. Which is hard to do if you had a restless night. -If the kids are sick, no go. Our membership ate a hole in our pocket for the month of February because we were all sick. I felt like it was money wasted. -I have to stay on site because I have kids in the day care. Which means running on a treadmill. Which is the worst for me — I'll run for 5 minutes and want to be done.
2. Get a double jogging stroller.
I have used a single jogger with my first and enjoyed being outside in the fresh air. Plus in Southern California you can pretty much go out year round (except February, when it rains all the time). This option is a lot easier to fit into your schedule, no place to drive, you just get out and go. I always try to end at a park so that the kids can have some time to play while I stretch out. Plus the kids enjoy being outside. If you like company when you run, you can find mom clubs that workout together.

Drawbacks:

-It is more work jogging with a jogger — but also more of a workout because it's like pushing weights the whole time. -They can also be quite expensive.
3. Go with a friend
It is always easier to get out and do exercise if you have someone to go with. Plus it's not as lonely. You could work out something where you go out while your friend watches the kids then she can go out when you come back. Or just go together early in the morning while your husband is home and the kids are sleeping.

Drawbacks:
You have to work with two peoples schedules and figure out what works best.

4. Workout videos at home
Like I said this is what I did with my first. I'm not sure how to make it work with two — but it's easy to do, easy to follow, you can do it in your own home, and cost is minimal.

Drawbacks:
-You have to do it while the kids are sleeping, otherwise they might get in the way. (My 3 year old likes to lift my weights and play with them.)
-Also, if you do it everyday for 3 months you could get burnt out of the same video and need to get more to stay motivated.

Wish me luck as I figure out my routine — and I'd love to hear what works for you!

Mommy Makeup

Another Gift Show find. Mommy Makeup is new on the scene and promises to cut your making-up-your-face time in half. You can buy each item individually, or in two kits:
Pretty-n-Polished or Clean-n-Casual.

Debra Rubin-Roberts is an award-winning makeup artist and founder of the new line. After she had her baby she was craving a simpler makeup routine and developed a series of cosmetics that cut her usual 13 different products down to six — all in containers that are quick and easy to use. Everything is multi-purpose and there are no little caps to screw on and off. Smart.

I want to try their Any Where Creme.

Apron Strings — by Guest Mom Kyran

I don't ever remember my mom wearing an apron. It was the seventies, the era of Free to Be, You and Me. Apron wearing was probably as good for your feminist cred as girdle-wearing.

In Grade Eight, I had to sew an apron for Home Economics. All of us used the same boxy, unisex pattern. It was practical as protective coverings go, but it sure wasn't pretty.

A few years ago, I came across a box of vintage aprons
at an estate sale. They were the extreme opposite of the one I'd made in junior high. Two of them were made of nylon net! I can't imagine actually cooking in them; you might catch fire.

But they are oh, SO pretty. I strung one across my
kitchen window as a kind of swag. On occasion, I'll wear one to greet guests when we entertain, as an ironic wink-wink-nudge-nudge to the fact that I am only playing house, after all, when I am dressed up like Suzy Homemaker.

I am not the only woman of my generation to be
rediscovering the apron.

Naturally, Etsy seems to be the motherlode:

This red gingham one incorporates a stitching technique called "chicken scratch," giving it a vintage farmgirl cachet:

I bought a smock-style apron like
the "Flirty Everyday Housewife" by Momo's Retro Fashions for a girlfriend at an estate sale recently, and almost kept it for myself. This style is not only exceedingly pretty, it actually looks practical.

Wearing your heart on your sleeve is so yesterday.
Don't you want to wear it on your handmade apron by CeceMarie for Valentine's?

The reason an apron was my (and most people's) first
sewing project is because they are super easy to sew. Tie One On, by Amy Karol, author of "Bend the Rules Sewing", is a terrific online source of inspiration and how-to.

Finally, here's a
sexy, see-through vintage number, from vintage emporium Ruby Lane. This one is sold, but a search on "aprons" any day of the week ought to yield a few treasures. Find one that suits you and release your inner Donna Reed! You can always appease your inner Betty Friedan by going braless, or even—what the heck, it's Valentine's Day — topless.

Of course, let's not get carried away. I recently posted a few gems from a vintage Hints From Heloise booklet that should help you regain perspective, should you find yourself nostalgic for a simpler, daintier time.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2082/2185757390_c0ae181696.jpg

And since we're tallking about aprons, naturally, if
you like it, you should Sk*rt it!

Matryoshka Dolls — by Guest Mom Kyran

When I was a little girl, a friend had a set of Russian wooden nesting dolls on her mantel. I loved to get them down and pop each of them inside the next biggest one, all the way up to the Mama Matryoshka, and then open them all up again in reverse order, all the way down to the little solid baby Matryoshka.

I hadn't thought about them in years, until I saw a
friend's photograph of a set in a storefront in New York city over Christmas. I immediately went searching for some. Nestingdolls.net has a wide variety of handpainted Matryoshkas, such as this traditional set, which is like the one I remember.

They would be adorable in a little girl's room or as a bohemian decorative accent elsewhere. Bits and Pieces has a wide assortment of dolls, from traditional to whimsical. Beyond the traditional rosy cheeked peasant design, there are some new interpretations of wooden nesting dolls, like these nesting animals, which my three year-old son would would go crazy over (I would inquire about the paint used on all these dolls before giving them to small children to handle):

Etsy has dozens of variations on the Matryoshka motif, from this gorgeous printed t-shirt

to
this boho-chic necklace

to
this exquisite skirt.

Matryoshka dolls are traditionally a symbol of
motherhood and fertility, making them perfect for baby shower gifts, or close friends who are TTC (trying to concieve). And for the ultimate Matryoska fan-girl, I stumbled on a navel ring with Matryoska charm.

Warning: if you do get pregnant, take that ring out
before your innie turns into an outie. Things that stretch during pregnancy do not necessarily snap back into place afterward. Trust me.

Baubles — by Guest Mom Leslie

It turns out that I happen to love jewelry. I wear simple signature pieces every day: small diamond studs, my wedding set, and a simple solitaire necklace. Sometimes I'll change it up if I'm feeling that my outfit needs an uplift. Since I've been blogging at A Room Somewhere, I've been surprised at how often beautiful jewelry catches my eye, and how much of it has ended up in my mailbox! Design Mom features lovely jewelry artisans often on her blog, people like Lisa Leonard. Lisa's personalized jewelry always resonates with me. I could own every single one of her pieces and not be a bit sad about it. I have a piece she made for me and I get compliments every time I put it on.

One of my favorite shops to browse is run by the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD). Their students, both current and former, create really unusual but completely wearable pieces,
like this Portrait Necklace, designed by Allyson Ross.

I love the assymetrical circles of silver she placed on the side of this antique porcelain button. ShopSCAD not only features jewelry, but clothing, artwork, and decorative home items as well.

And here's a collection of gorgeous pieces from some of my favorite online sources for fabulous, unusual, elegant jewelry. Pick out something pretty for yourself!

How to Knot a Tie

Seeing that photo of my mom has me thinking about different necktie knots. I found this very helpful website giving illustrated directions on 4 variations. Have you ever worn neckties? I loved to wear them in high school and college — it always felt mildly rebellious — but haven't attempted to put one on for years.

Minus Bags

I know well the guilt of walking out of the store with my grocery cart full of plastic bags — when the shopper right before me did the responsible thing and brought their own reusable bags. I tell you. I can not seem to get the habit to stick. But I'm going to try harder.

Maybe the beautiful options from Minus Bags, by Brooklyn-based designer MB Mullan, will keep me on the path of green-i-ness. A great hostess gift idea. I especially like the 3 peas.

Holiday Giveaway #6 — Two Necklaces from Julian & Co.

Oh Goody! More Jewelry to give away. And this time, it's something for Mom and something for Dad. Today is your chance to win two gorgeous necklaces from Julian & Co.

The Grande Baby Coin and the Piccolo Baby Coin.

These necklaces are both beautiful and well crafted. I'm drawn to their simplicity. The Piccolo Baby Coin is solid silver (.999) and is 5/8" in diameter. You get to send in a photo of your darling bébé, and an artist will make a simple line drawing from the photo, and inscribe the image on the front of the coin. You also get to include two lines of text on the back.
The Piccolo Baby Coin hangs on a sterling silver cable chain. It retails for $79.

The Grande Baby Coin is also solid silver (.999) and is a larger 3/4" in diameter. It can also be inscribed with an image of your baby on the front and two lines of text on the back.
The Grande Baby Coin hangs on a sterling silver ball chain. It retails for $89.

Is Daddy the photographer in your family? Pick one of his favorite shots and have it inscribed on the coin. What a happy surprise for him on Christmas morning. Is he not a jewelry kind of guy? Then more bling for you, you lucky girl.

Thank you Julian & Co.!
