A Few Things

Hello, Friends! How are you? Have you had a good week? I’m still trying to be patient with myself — and I’ve read and re-read your kind, wise words here and here many times. Thank you!

I’ve especially been trying to save up some energy because we have some big days coming up. Olive Blair turns 12 on Sunday! And Ralph Blair turns 16 on Monday! Plus, the First Day of School for 4 of the kids is on Monday as well. That’s a lot of exciting stuff!

I can’t wait to tell you about how we’re celebrating — I’ll report next week. And you can certainly get a peek on Instagram as well. In the meantime, here are a few things I’ve wanted to share:

- Wonderland captures by a very patient (and probably very chilly!) photographer.

- We just chatted about this last week! And now I find this goldmine.

- There are a few thoughts in this letter that made me weep.

- This interior designer has a gift for mixing patterns, doesn’t she?

- Who knew there were so many ways to use crayons?

- My latest posts on CaféMom: A teeny tiny nursery in tight quarters, and a soft and soothing nursery in fresh pastels.

- I would eat anything this color, I think.

- Greatest Keyboard Shortcut Ever.

- So stunning, but I’m not sure I could wear this. For a few reasons.

- A model workout. (I’m the worst at working out, but the idea of do-anywhere workouts are super appealing to me.)

- Jora’s family is spending seven months in Italy. I love seeing her daily peeks here.

- I’m not sure why ball gown skirts make me happy, but they do. Or is it that floral madness happening?

- And 15 S’mores-Inspired Recipes to tempt you as summer ends.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. I’ll meet you back here on Monday. I miss you already.

kisses,
Gabrielle

P.S. — We’re seeing the first signs of fall this week. I’m really looking forward to discovering what autumn in Oakland is like!

I just noticed the yearly first sign of Fall. The squirrels in Minnesota start to go mental. They start running around like maniacs with stuff in their mouths. I mean they run everywhere. Up, down, along fences. Up and down trees. In and out of yards and alleys. And poor them, across streets. We need little squirrel funeral homes. Many of the little fellas don’t make it out of Fall alive. On account of their wackadoodleness. So, it is inevitable. Fall is coming. It is my favorite time…but in Minnesota it is all-too-short.

Oh, Gabrielle. This did me in: “The very best thing about your life is a short stage in someone else’s story. And it is enough.” Our oldest just received his first college recruitment/info letter in the mail, and change is looming on our horizon. Thank you for sharing this…I have quite a few friends who are going through this now, or will be in the next year or two, and will appreciate Gerson’s thoughts.

Oh my goodness how in the world do you have a child turning 16?! You are far too young!!! I am so glad that you are taking care of yourself! I think that as Mother’s we learn to just keep going even when we be slowing down! I have learned that saying no is a good thing and rest is the best medicine! My kiddies are constantly telling me that slow and steady wins the race. Such a cliché, but so true! -xo-

I used to love in northern California and I LOVE autumn there! It is gorgeous, but rainy. The good kind of hard rain that cleans everything in its path. The kind where you can sit and read a book or fall asleep to.

I love do-anywhere workouts! Saying that, I just came back from walking/jogging at the local track for the first time. So glad I realized I have a close, off-road option.
Hope your weekend is lovely, Gabrielle :) You are in my thoughts and your openness with your readers is one of the things I’ve been grateful for lately.

Gabrielle, I do hope you are feeling better. It’s great that you communicate your feelings and are going easy on yourself.

Just over one year ago, we arrived in our new home. I was so excited, but was greeted with an unexpected case of malaise. Things turned around for me, but I wrote a post about that initial feeing. Perhaps some of the comments here will be helpful?

Thanks so much for the article on kids leaving home Gabrielle. It was profound and absolutely eloquent! I plan to share it as well.

Glad to hear you are being patient with yourself. Life has a way of helping us move forward and keep going. Keep appreciating all the love that is around you. This reminds me of a quote: “Sometimes we need a sign that we’re on the right track and that everything will be okay.” I’m sure there are plenty of signs around you. Happy Birthday to your kids – I’m sure they will remember these birthdays as their first ones in Oakland! Take care – love reading your posts and following instagram!

I love the ball gown skirts too! And yes, the floral pattern in black is so beautiful – old, yet new and new and so very fresh!!! Like a good pair of jeans which can be dressed up or down, I often think a long skirt can be as well. Lovely ♥

Thank you so much for the mention, Gabby. I am just getting caught up on blog reading! I truly hope you are feeling better soon. The best advice someone once gave me is “you WILL feel better”….you have so many people rooting for you. xxx
