Is it Better to Walk or Run in the Rain?

Is it better to walk or run in the rain?

Just like Alice, I’m wildly curious. A simple question or cooking conundrum or news report can send me deep into that rabbit hole of endless facts and fallacy — the internet. Just the other day, it was raining cats and dogs. The kind of rain that fills the streets up in seconds and sends poor cyclists and pedestrians for cover. My son and I were watching these wet passerbys from our living room window and I wondered, Is it better to walk or run in the rain? Is there a better choice when trying to stay as dry as possible?

And the internet answered with this wonderful discovery: Minute Physics videos on Youtube. Short bursts of educational and enthusiastic answers to basic science-related questions. Like, the down-low on parallel universes, Is there poop on the moon?, Why it’s dark at night, and the difference between immovable objects and unstoppable forces.

I also found the answer on my rain conundrum. If you’re trying to get somewhere, run as fast as you can. : )

Oh, I’m actually glad that my work blocks YouTube. I have a feeling I could lose my whole morning on a site like that!
Is there poop on the moon is my new favorite question. Ever.

So funny, right? I never, never would have thought to ask that question.

Mythbusters covered this in their expedition in Chicago last summer at the The Museum of Science and Industry. You could really run through a rain machine and test it out for yourself. The kids loved it! I think it is a traveling expedition and is in Portland now.

It’s also tackled by the Mythbusting boys on episode No. 4

Ha! I love it when I’m right. :) I remember having this debate with a friend in college–I’ll have to send him this link! So fun!

I am always wearing flip-flops, and so when I get caught in the rain, I walk…because otherwise its dangerous.
however, if I can, I’m happy to lace up my running shoes and go for a run in the rain. nothing better than that!

I love to run in the rain, too, Amy. I have some very happy memories of running in the rain with my high school cross country girls and in college with my best friend and sister. It’s the best.

but that’s a very scientific look at it. and I was using my own ‘amy logic’ in my don’t run in flip flops rule
