A Few Things

Hello, Friends! How are you? My sincere thanks for another great week of conversation here on Design Mom. I loved your thoughts on selfies, your passion for dishtowels and aprons, your flower care wisdom, your responses to How To Be Two, and your kind words about Ben Blair. I always love reading what you have to say!

It’s been a big week for our family. We spent Sunday in Ireland, and Monday on the Ferry home. We celebrated Maude’s 14th birthday on Tuesday and Ben’s 40th birthday on Thursday. And today is the last day of school vacation. Which means next Monday is back to normal. And I confess: I can’t wait! I’m looking forward to our usual routine again.

While we make a simple plan for the weekend, here are a few things I’ve been wanting to share with you:

- Making nests for spring.

- Proof of toxic sugar — I’m curious how the FDA will respond.

- Happy and clever ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with your kids — 20 ideas!

- We found our son on the subway. via ABAL.

- Would be a cute little gift.

Oreo Machine. “It was also hard to keep my neck warm.” and  ”I’ve been working on this for .04 years.” So funny! Thanks, Sarah.

- My aunt sent me this article on The Future of Abundance. Such an amazing time to be alive.

Indoor play spaces.

- A new design every day: Step Away From the Screen and Make Something.

- Don’t miss Ralph’s video: Zombie Smash episode one.

I hope you have a marvelous weekend and dream springtime dreams. (It’s supposed to snow here next week, but I’m in denial.) I’ll meet you back here on Monday. I miss you already.

kisses,
Gabrielle

P.S. — I snapped the image at top when I was running errands today. It’s a particularly charming street in our town.

Thank you for posting Peter Mercurio’s NYT article! Their family has such a heartwarming story, and it’s great to see it shared on your blog.

Who was the winner of the HEart and Stone giveaway?

So glad you asked! The winner has been emailed, but in the craziness of the week, I forgot to add the winner to the giveaway post. I just updated it now. Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks for sharing the two brilliant articles on sugar and abundance!
I feel so much more empowered (and may be a titch smarter, too)! You are awesome!

So I read the article on toxic sugar (yikes) and then browsed the link on 20 ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with my kids. It struck me that all but 2 of the ideas involved serving sugary treats. I guess St. Patrick’s Day is a bust without sugar. Just pointing out the conflicting messages here.

And full disclosure, I’m a hypocrite. I read the sugar article while eating ice cream. Do I get any credit back for (half-heartedly) swearing to never eat it again while I was reading?

Oh. I am in the same place. Swearing off sugar — after I finish this bag of gummi bears. Sorry for the mixed messages!

Ben Blair and I have been discussing how we can realistically do less sugar with the kids. We’re considering trying no sugar on most days, but then allowing a sugar day once or twice a month to accomodate birthdays and holidays. It’s tricky to change traditions. I certainly don’t pretend we have any tried and true solutions. : )

Hi Gabrielle!
I hope you have a great weekend. Just wanted to let you know that I can’t see Design Mom on my iPad anymore. I don’t know if it has to do with the new iOS, but now when I look at DM on my iPad it just shows all the pictures basically stacked on top of each other with the text all garbled up. I have no idea if that’s just my experience, but I thought I’d make you aware of it in case it can be fixed or something. BTW, I’m running iOS 6.1.2! Anyway, I’ll just keep looking on my desktop until it works again! :)

Just went and checked our other iPad which is running iOS 6.1.1 and I can see the site fine. Def seems to be an issue with the latest update.

Thanks for letting me know, Maria! I always feel so helpless about this sort of thing. I’ll let my tech team know and see if they can recommend a fix. If it’s happening for you with any other wordpress blogs, I’d love to hear!

I read on iPod touch and it looks great, if that helps at all!

I went to three other wordpress blogs:
http://www.ilovetypography.com
http://www.obeygiant.com
http://www.cutestpaw.com

They all show up normal on my iPad. I sent you a screenshot of what comes up on my ipad. I sent it to gabrielle@designmom.com
Also, I’d just like to reserve the right that I can sometimes be pretty dense about this stuff and this could all be totally my fault!! ??

“A Few Things” is the highlight of my blog reading every week. I can’t tell you how many wonderful products I’ve tried, small companies I now purchase regularly from, and articles I’ve shared with friends and family because you’ve share them with me. LOVE the Post Cartens and ordered some for little spring gifts, which I cannot wait to send!
When my kids were in elementary school, they’d enter their classrooms on St. Patty’s Day to find some naughty leprechauns had upended furniture, haphazardly rearranged the supplies and left a trail of gold coins–chocolate, of course! Such fun!

Gabby – tell Ralph that I await with bated breath for his next instalment of the zombie movie! (not a zombies fan, just love to see the work of young creatives) What a talented young man. And I thought his blackberries short was exquisite . What a sensitive and joyful treatment of an everyday snippet of life – hard to wrap my head around the fact that it was created by a 16 year old!!

Would love to watch Zombie smash, but
“The content owner has not made this video available on mobile”
Which means it won’t play on iPad.

Sorry about that, Brigit! I checked with Ralph and he said that because of the music he used at the end, he is restricted from making the video available on mobile devices. And you’re not the only one who is bothered — he said his friends at school were complaining about it to him. : )

He also said he’ll be sure to pick music that is allowable on mobile devices for future episodes. And for a workaround, he recommended trying the app called YouTube Downloader. He said he uses it to download and youtube videos he likes directly to his ipad, and then he can watch them there.

I hope that helps!
