You know what makes me smile? The Missed Connections section of Craigslist. Have you heard of it? Hopeful or hopeless, they’re a vicarious What if? that is endlessly fascinating. Sophie Blackall, a Brooklyn-based illustrator, took these sometimes “romantic, rude, or bizarre digital message-in-a-bottle notes” and turned them into art.
Missed Connections: Love, Lost and Found is a collection of illustrated love stories. In this NPR radio interview about her book, Sophie talks about being contacted by the man who posted: ”We shared a bear suit at an apartment party”— the man she drew in the bear suit above. Isn’t that crazy?
P.S. — If you’ve been on the subway in New York City recently, you may have also seen Blackall’s portrait posters inside the cars.

I love her work. Especially these. Shows how connected we all are. (She’s also the illustrator of the IVY + BEAN chapter book series which I adore!)
I love Ivy + Bean too, Carter. She is so great.
Deeeeelightful. This is such a wonderful idea. What a great book!
I ADORE her subway art. This post reminds me of a song I sing at auditions: The people that you never get to love:

Ah, I thought the illustration looked familiar! I just spent two days admiring the darling and clever subway illustration. Very cool indeed.
Yes. I don’t know why there isn’t more artwork commissioned for the subways since we’re all so desperate for something to stare at to avoid other’s gazes. :)
so cute.

Thank you for sharing!
Absolutely fell in love with Sophie Blackall and couldn’t resist buying a print of her’s on Etsy for my daughter’s room. Thank you for continuing to change the course of my day with the introduction of positive, creative moments through your blog.

That’s hilarious. I’m so curious to know how that date went….
I am so in love with art that starts out with a really clever idea. This is fantastic! Inspiration truly is everywhere
