Oh, this book. I know it’s not ok to rip pages out of books, but these illustrations are just so gorgeous and frameworthy! Actually, I think that’s the most wonderful part of a picture book – they are like tiny art museums you can hold in your hands.
Ten Birds by Cybele Young is a counting tale wrapped in a fable. Those ten lovely birds have to find a way to cross a river. One by one, they design ways to cross, leaving their friends behind. The one they call “Magnificent” swoops on a ramshackle kite. The one they call “Outstanding” catapults her way across.
The storytelling in Ten Birds is beautifully layered and so satisfying for all readers – little ones and big ones alike. Will they all cross successfully? What about the last of them, the one they call “Needs Improvement?”
