The preschool my daughter went to last year had a bookshelf in the porch full of books with a note saying “Bring a book, Take a book”. Great for mums who were going home for a peaceful cup of tea before it was time to do the school run again!

It’s coming closer to that dream of a booksharinglivingroom-cafe where you can read a book, drink some hot cocoa and dunk a donut and..now that I read my own thaughts: there would have to be a corner, where lovely people would read books to my kids, so I could enjoy the lecture… …but as for today I love your wonderful free library!

I would love to have people be able to go from one library to another, choosing the perfect book. You’re so lucky to live so close to one of the founders!

He’s a smart, funny, generous man and the libraries reflect not only his great ideas but also his great heart. We have so many little libraries in Madison and they’re always full of books, with people standing around chatting, peering in to see what’s there or even reading on the sidewalk. It’s just so wonderful!

There’s another movement where you leave books at bus stops, and you can label them and follow them to see where they go. I’m a fan of books everywhere. Both anonymous books and hello-meet-your-neighbor books.

They get the whole school involved (or maybe it’s just one class? that might make more sense) with the designing, building. and book collecting.

It does match our house, but mostly because we sided the house ourselves, so we had siding left over. Truthfully, if I had done it all by myself, it would’ve been a wooden box that wasn’t quite square, painted with pink and purple flowers to cover up the poor construction. I’m lucky to live with a bunch of very handy people. I can, however, bake the cookies to give out to Little Free Library patrons. (And recommend books! It’s so satisfying to match up random strangers with a book I know they’ll like!)

It’s SO WORTH IT. Mostly I just go stand out there, hand over heart, sighing contentedly (um, I just realized this behavior might be scaring potential patrons away…).
