I was surfing last Friday and came across these eye-catching creations by sculptor Mike Libby of Insect Lab. The insects come from all over the world, and the cogs / gears / wheels come from antique watches.
They look like something from a book — antique and sci-fi at the same time. I can’t stop looking at them and thought I’d share. : ) What do you think of them? Creepy or cool?
P.S. — I’m working on another update about our kids and the French schools. Hopefully I’ll publish it later today.

I think you just blew my mind.
These are awesome Gabrielle!
The first time I ever saw anything like this was when I met my friend’s wife (both from New Zealand) who has been doing this kind of thing for years. She modifies bigger animals though. You can see her work at

I’m with Pamela above, this blew my mind. Fantastic.
They are beautiful!
These remind me of a substitute teacher I had in 5th-6th grade. We all called her the “bug lady” because she had a pet bug that had a tiny little jewelery chain glued to it and a pin at the other end of the chain – so she wore her bug pinned to her chest, with the chain acting as a little leash. It was hard to concentrate in class because we were all watching to see if the bug would move and prove to us that it was real and still alive – and it was! I think it’s still one of the craziest things I’ve seen.
Caitlin, this is definitely the craziest story I’ve heard in a while. I had to read your post twice to make sure I understood correctly. Crazy! :)
These insects are something straight out of a steampunk book/movie. So cool!
It’s that ridiculous?! We always hoped for her as our substitute because it was just so fun to see something so bizarre . . .
Okay that’s sad for the bug! :(
My daughter and I just finished reading Cabinet of Wonders by Marie Rutkoski together. These bugs remind me of the creations the main character’s father makes out of metal, It was a great book.
LOVE these! I can’t wait to share these with my buggy boys! We have lots of bug lovers, young and old….these are beautiful.
Reminds me of the mechanical bird(?) in the original (and best) “Clash of the Titans!” Too cool:)
Definitely cool.
Whoa! Those are the only kind of bugs I like! Awesome! -Emily
