A Few Things & Happy New Year!

December 30, 2011

Hello Friends! How are you? Do you have an exciting event to attend (hopefully involving sequins!) for New Year’s Eve? We are making simple plans with the kids. I’m betting they will include watching movies, eating sweets and banging pots and pans at midnight. : ) While we make a list of party candy, here are a few things I posted on Babble this week:

- Still plenty of time to send out New Year’s Cards. Here are 10 cute ones.
- In love with this lamp. Seriously coveting.
- Such a cool handmade book (let’s all copy!).
- You can put your new holidays toys in these.
- I could look at great family photos all day long.

Happy New Year to each of you! I hope you have a marvelous weekend. No doubt your 2011 will finish up grandly. I’ll meet you back here next week. I miss you already.

kisses,
Gabrielle

P.S. — I love this image Wendy snapped at our house. Doesn’t it make you want to look toward 2012 and imagine what it will bring? So much brightness!

Unto You a Child is Born!

December 29, 2011

We declared this year’s Christmas Eve Nativity our favorite one yet. I’m not sure what it was, but I’ll take it!

The cast: Betty was a tender Mary. Oscar was a serious and sober Joseph. Olive was the bold angel. Maude was the sore-afraid shepherd. Ralph was a noble wiseman bearing gifts. June was too big for the manger so the kids suggested she would be a good sheep, and brought her the little sheepskin rug to wear. But she thought that was crazy hilarious and just wanted to see what was up with the doll in the basket. : )

Ben Blair read from Luke and Matthew and we sang some of our favorite Christmas carols. It was sweet and happy. Afterwards, we finished reading the last few chapters of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, which is also sweet and happy.

I can’t believe Christmas is already over! We’ll be driving home tomorrow and I’m remembering the tree and other decorations waiting for us there. I need to start thinking about putting everything away and finding places for the new toys. Last year I recall feeling rushed to put it all away and start packing up for France, but this year I’m feeling the urge to slow everything down.

How about you? Have you already said goodbye to Christmas? Or are you an after New Year’s kind of girl?

Oscar’s Horses

December 28, 2011

Did I tell you my kids were out of school the entire week before Christmas? We loved having them home and especially loved getting to skip the morning-get-to-school routine. But, since Ben Blair and I were both working last week, the kids had to entertain themselves.

Oscar kept himself busy by making a series of large cut-paper horses. Aren’t they awesome? They are about as big as he is! Each one is different. Each one has powers of some sort and an associated story. If Oscar tells you the story of one of the horses, he will probably need to stop midway through to add something to the drawing that he just thought of.

Do not be fooled. Even though some might look like unicorns, THEY ARE NOT UNICORNS (emphasis added by Oscar).

I am in love with this series of horses and so impressed he took on such an ambitious project. But I’m also feeling lucky about the art studio at La Cressonnière and the fact that our landlords had it stocked for us with stacks of over-sized paper. I find that big paper inspires big ideas.

Have your kids ever surprised or inspired you with a project or idea they came up with?

Waffle Tour 2011

December 28, 2011

Ben Blair has the week off work, so Sunday night, we planned a last-minute roadtrip to Germany. Roadtrip FTW! It’s a long-ish drive, so we decided to break it up with a Waffle Tour through Belgium yesterday.

We started in Bruges with chocolate waffles. Stopped in Brussels for strawberry waffles. And tried Liege waffels in Liege. (Liege waffles are denser and have a sugary coating. Sometimes we’ve found them at Whole Foods, if you’d like to try them yourself.) The drive ended in Cologne, Germany where we woke up this morning. And now, we’re off to explore…

I hope your Winter Break is going swimmingly. Are you traveling? Spending time with cousins? Skiing? Having a laid-back week at home? I’d love to hear!

P.S. — Here are lots more images of Waffle Tour 2011 if you’d like to see:

Joyeux Noel from The Blairs!

Thanks for indulging me while I share more Christmas-y photos from the Blue Lily shoot. I think the family shot would have been perfect for holiday cards this year — if only I had sent some out. Thank goodness there’s always next year. : )

May your days be merry and bright!

kisses,
Gabrielle

A Few Things

December 23, 2011

Hello, Friends! How are you? Are you ready for this weekend? Last weekend, the amazing Wendy of Blue Lily Photography came to our home here in Normandy, and we did the funnest family photo shoot. And today I have pictures to share! I’m so excited!!

Ben Blair and I found a little vintage car to rent for the shoot, put everybody in their Christmas finery and set out on a country road near our home. Then, Wendy worked her magic. And I LOVE how the pictures turned out!! I’ve included 10 of my favorites here. While I grin and grin at that cute car (and those cute kids!), here are a few things I’ve been wanting to share with you:

- Christmas isn’t Christmas without a reading of Six to Eight Black Men.
- Love this Kirtsy slideshow. Am I the last to know about glass straws?
- Gingerbread trees.
- My picks for frame-worthy calendars.
- Hot pink.
- This talk blew my mind.
- Thank you, Disney!
- Instead of bows.

I also write for Babble. Here are this week’s posts:
- Ready for New Year’s? Here are 25 sparkly pieces to inspire your party outfit.
- What’s the cleverest holiday card you received this year?
- Made of 100% wool with interchangeable clothes. So cute.
- Decoration that will make you want to party!
- A gorgeous new online magazine all about entertaining.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and Merry Christmas! I’ll mostly be off next week but will definitely check in with a post or two. I’ll meet you back here soon. I miss you already!

kisses,
Gabrielle

P.S. — Don’t stress, it’s all staged, I promise! We didn’t really drive around town with the kids on the car. : ) See the photos in bigger sizes here.

Design Mom Asks

December 23, 2011

In the spirit of this holiday season, when gifts are on our minds with every e-mail alert, frantic countdown, panicked to-do list, and last-minute letters to Santa, I thought it would be sweet to press pause for a moment and reflect. So I asked a few lovelies to finish the following sentence: The most wonderful gift I’ve ever received has to be…

Kimberly of Mimi Charmante: …my most recent trip to Paris with my husband. We went to celebrate my birthday in November, and he went all out this time — from business class tickets to the most incredible hotel room that we have ever stayed in. When we threw open our windows each morning (Even though it was November, I simply had to do it. I mean, we were in Paris!), we were greeted with the most beautiful slate rooftops and the belle of the ball, La Tour Eiffel. It was absolutely divine. Spending time with my best friend in my favorite city to celebrate another wonderful year really was such a gift, and one that I shall treasure thanks to the copious amount of photos I took as well as the memories we made.

Megan of Pink O’Clock: …a fresh start. Last year, after a challenging 2010, I lost my full-time job on the last day of December. And while initially I was scared out of my mind and wasn’t sure what on earth I was going to do next, once the shock wore off, I realized how unhappy I’d been in my former position and what a gift it was to be able to step away from that toxicity, get back to myself, and figure out what it was I really wanted to do. Somehow there’s always something positive to be gained from loss, isn’t there?

That loss was the gift that keeps on giving, too. To fill its void, I worked hard to find a job that I love and am passionate about. I’ve met new friends, and I’ve reconnected with old ones. I learned that the only way to get anything you want is to ask for it. I’ve sustained a feeling of forward momentum throughout most of this year. And it’s been amazing. So thanks, Universe, for the best gift I’ve ever gotten, and for reinforcing the old adage that you work in mysterious ways.

Stephanie of Adventures in Babywearing: …after an incredibly difficult year of my son’s illness and treatment, my husband and mom gave me the entire Willow Tree nativity collection that I had been wanting for a long time. It was before Christmas, so it was absolutely unexpected and such a surprise. And their reason was to acknowledge all that I’d been through and what I’d done to get my son better. It meant so much. He’s all better now, thankfully, many years later!

Anne-Maree of The House That A-M Built: …my education. My Mum had three children to educate on her own. She couldn’t afford to send us to private school, so she encouraged us to interview for a selective state school. The school gave us a wonderful education and entry into university…for all three of us. To be able to live at home and be loved, nurtured, and supported while studying at university for five years has to be one of the greatest gifts I have received in my life – besides my two beautiful boys, but that’s a given. And I am passing that gift down to them.

Estelle of Under a Pink Moon: …the gift of patience. When I was eight years old, I noticed a tiny box, wrapped in shiny purple paper resting on a branch of our tree, days before Christmas. I spent a great deal of time examining that box, imagining what treasure could be inside. I found a way to carefully open each corner of wrap and slide the box out so as not to disturb any of the precise folds. Inside was a delicate gold-colored ornament — a birdcage with five tiny birds and a single bell hanging by a red string.

The moment I opened that box and caught a glimpse at its precious contents, my heart broke. I had stolen my own chance for childlike delight on Christmas morning and betrayed my mother’s trust. My mom had been giving me a special ornament every Christmas since I was a baby with the idea that someday I would have my own tree, my own family, and my own box full of heirlooms. Money was usually pretty scarce and holidays were rarely lavish, but there was always an ornament for my collection.

Since then, I have never felt the urge to shake a package, peak in a closet, or even open a shopping bag tucked away by my husband. Indeed, I learned that lesson the hard way. Each year, I make a point of carefully unwrapping that birdcage and finding a special spot on the tree for it to hang. It remains one of my most cherished gifts, both the ornament and the life lesson. Patience will always have its own reward.

—-

These answers warm my heart, and I’m grateful to each of the gifted ladies who shared her story. And now it’s your turn. Will you finish the sentence, please? The most wonderful gift I’ve ever received has to be…

I can’t wait to hear your answers!

Hee Haw and Merry Christmas!

December 22, 2011

All I want to do between now and Christmas morning is watch holiday movies. (It’s not really an option, but it’s fun to daydream about!) Ben Blair and I were chatting about what movies we’d like to watch, and we realized our kids have never seen It’s a Wonderful Life. Surely, that’s some sort of December crime. We have promised ourselves we’ll watch it this week. I think the older 3 will quite enjoy it.

What’s on your holiday movie must-watch list?

P.S. — A list of our favorite Christmas movies.

Last Minute Gifts

December 22, 2011

Okay, Friends. Christmas is in a couple of days. Any gift-buying from here on out is officially last-minute. But no stress, because last-minute can be awesome!

Some of the funnest, most thoughtful gifts to gift, whether it’s last minute, or I have all the time in the world, are experiences. Tickets to a show, a trip, that sort of thing. You can schedule the experience for any future date, and quickly wrap up a note with a description for the gift. Jordan did an excellent post on this topic with 10 really cool ideas, and it reminded me, I’ve been meaning to tell you about the cooking class I took last summer from Susan Loomis. A cooking class (or any good class) would make an amazing gift!

Ben Blair and I took the class with my brother Josh and his wife Erin, while they were on a trip to France. Susan’s house is about an hour outside of Paris in an old convent, right across the street from a Cathedral. The setting was stunning and the food was fantastic!

The ingredients were farm fresh and we had Susan all to ourselves so we could get individual instruction and ask a million questions. At one point, Susan took us out into her garden to cut fresh herbs to use in the meal. So cool!

We took a million photos because the whole thing was just so delightful. Here’s a little slideshow. Click Prev/Next if you’d like to see.

My brother Salem gave us a gift this year that I think falls under “experience”, but didn’t require us to leave our house. He bought us a gift certificate to Kiva, which we used to make a micro-loan to a hard-working borrower. Kiva is new-to-me, but I’m so impressed! My kids got to look through all the loan applicants and pick someone they really wanted to help. They ended up choosing a mother with grown children in Samoa.  Coolest part: when she pays her loan back, we can re-loan the funds to another Kiva entreprenuer. It’s like a perpetual gift!

How about you? Have you ever given or received an “experience” before? A class? A trip? A session with a world class coach? I’d love to hear your ideas!

P.S. — For those of you who have seen the House Hunters International episode, Susan’s house is the second one we looked at — the old convent with lots of stairs and gourmet kitchen. Susan ended up deciding not to sell it — so you can still take classes there!

Commando Santa

December 21, 2011

For the past 13 Christmases, a firefighter dressed as Santa Claus has repelled off the Belize Bridge to deliver gifts to children living below in some of the poorest neighborhoods of Guatemala City. Heart-warming and heroic is a lovely combination, isn’t it?

Forget for a moment that Santa’s belly and beard look less than authentic, and imagine instead the joy this wonderful tradition must bring to those kids. It makes me feel lucky and a little misty all at once.

There are so many stories like this one that spark chain-reactions of kindness. You’ve heard of the Layaway Santas paying off others’ layaway accounts, right? I’m sure there’s more goodness out there, too. I believe in it! Tell me: What’s your favorite Good Samaritan story?

P.S. — Another sweet December story.

Happy Hanukkah!

December 20, 2011

Did you know Hanukkah begins this evening? I know very little about Jewish holidays and customs, but I always wish I knew more — my father’s side of the family is Jewish and it would make sense to infuse our home life with more knowledge about this part of our heritage. Plus, I wouldn’t say [...]

Living With Kids: Jamie Diersing

December 20, 2011

The weather is pretty cold in Ohio during these winter months, but there’s lovely warmth glowing from inside the Diersing home. Just look. It’s in the paint colors, scattered around randomly among the collections, and boldly hanging on the walls. This is a family who makes things and makes them beautifully, but I think what [...]
