New Column: Author Interviews!

September 12, 2011

As part of the ongoing 5th Anniversary celebrations, I’m super excited to introduce a new column today. Since children’s books have always played such a big role here at Design Mom, once a month, I’ll be featuring an interview with an excellent children’s book author. The very first one is coming up shortly. I think [...]

A Few Things

September 9, 2011

Hello, Friends! Did you have an interesting week? Not sure if it’s back-to-school season or what, but recently, I’ve read and watched a dozen things that have my brain doing backbends. I love it! It’s made for great conversations with Ben Blair and it may or may not have influenced this list of a few [...]

Luxembourg Gardens

September 9, 2011

It feels like we haven’t visited Paris in ages. On our last trip (it was in July), we spent the afternoon at Luxembourg Gardens with Jordan and Paul. We ate ice cream on the great lawn and road the go-karts in the shade. From what I understand, the go-kart area is an independent venture [...]

Always In Style

September 9, 2011

image by Joielala Photographie I love how all the women look in this photo shoot. It’s not about the specific styling, but it is all about the style. Not one of them tugging on an uncomfortable dress, the jewelry looks collected and totally non-contrived, and the video is adorable. Moreover, everyone looks like she’s been [...]

The Burning House

September 8, 2011

Image of Yongki Hermawan’s belongings. If your house was burning, what would you take with you? I think about this all the time, don’t you? Once I’ve grabbed everyone I love, there are really only a few things left that matter. Which is exactly the idea behind The Burning House. Have you seen this site [...]

Vintage School Baby Shower

September 8, 2011

My dear friend in Colorado is having a baby this month. Oh how I wish I was there to throw her a baby shower! But you can bet that hasn’t stopped me from imagining what sort of party I’d throw. : ) I think this classic school theme is perfect for a September Baby Shower, [...]

Baum Kuchen

September 7, 2011

I keep visiting Baum Kuchen to admire all the grown-up school supplies. I guess technically they’re office supplies, but in September, school supplies sounds better. Maybe someday, when my kids no longer have school supply lists, I’ll make packages of sophisticated folders, pens and paperclips for friends instead. I especially love the brass collection. Work Life Balance: Part 2

September 7, 2011

Poster by Anthony Burrel. Spotted on Joy Ever After. Hello, Friends! Are you ready for part two of the Work Life Balance Series? I have five more thoughts to share with you — some are more “work” related. Others focus more on “life. Plus, I’ve included some really great quotes from Design Mom Readers. Once [...]

The Longboard Girls

September 7, 2011

If I’m ever feeling a little flat-footed and uninspired, I just watch the Longboard Girls. The word rad was definitely invented for them. The mom in me loves that they wear helmets, but there’s also a wilder side to me that envies their speed. And by the time the Decemberists make it to “And it’s [...]

Book of the Week: We Need a Horse

September 6, 2011

McSweeney’s has just introduced a new imprint of children’s books and We Need a Horse is the first title I’ve taken a look at. It’s possible that I’m biased — at this point I assume I’ll love anything McSweeney’s publishes. But truly, I think this is a wonderful book. The story is about a horse [...]

Wild Blackberries

September 6, 2011

The country road we live on is lined with wild blackberries that started ripening near the end of August. There are so many! Every few days, we fill a basket, then eat them by the bowlful with cream and a touch of honey. When I was growing up in St. George, sometimes we’d find wild [...]

Happy Labor Day!

September 5, 2011

Hooray for bar-be-ques and backyard parties! I hope you’re enjoying a wonderful day off from all your labors. And eating food cooked on a grill. I found these photos on Martha Stewart’s Labor Day ideas page. They made me happy and homesick at the same time. Please eat a slice of watermelon for me today. [...]

A Few Things

September 2, 2011

Hello Friends! Are you ready for Labor Day Weekend? Any fun plans? Big BBQs? A last-minute summer hurrah? My brother Jared and lovely Liz are coming to Normandy tomorrow. We can’t wait to see them! We are going to tour around the countryside. Or hang out at La Cressonnière. Or both. Maybe we’ll make another [...]

What to Wear to Kindergarten – Euro Edition

September 2, 2011

It’s Betty Blair’s turn! (Fun fact: Betty is our only child with no middle name.) If Betty was in the US, she would be attending Kindergarten. Here, she’ll be attending the final year of Maternelle. For some reason that I can no longer remember, I hadn’t shopped for Betty in ages. Everything she owned [...]

What to Wear to First Grade – Euro Edition

September 2, 2011

Are you completely sick of What to Wear posts yet? So many kids! I hope you’ll indulge me while I finish the series. It’s Oscar’s turn now, and I think I’ll post Betty’s today too, so it’s all wrapped up this week. Thank you truly for your kind comments. The kids LOVE reading what you [...]

School Supplies in France

September 2, 2011

School supplies are a big deal here. The lists are long. And they’re detailed. Instead of listing something like “notebook”, they’ll specify dimensions, interior details, and color. Shopping for our school supplies took about twice as long as the back-to-school clothes shopping. I think we made 10 trips to 6 different stores before we gathered everything. [...]

What to Wear to 4th/5th Grade – Euro Edition

September 1, 2011

Olive’s Turn! Olive Jean Blair is delightful. She adores color and we did our best to work it in amongst the navy and grey and neutrals. As you might guess, Olive’s wardrobe is peppered with hand-me-downs from Maude — but we always make sure to work in a few new things that are especially [...]

Pocket Hearts

September 1, 2011

It’s the first day of school. I’m so nervous for everyone! I hope they have a wonderful day and come home excited for the new year. I saw these felt pocket hearts and think they’re adorable. You slip them in your kids pockets when you send them off, so they can carry a tangible bit [...]
