Ralph’s Screenplay Contest – Vote Now!

August 24, 2011

Exciting news!! Some of you may remember the rad screenplay contest Ralph launched in April. He received so many fun scripts from kids of all ages, and had a wonderful time reading through them and picking 5 to turn into movies. Part of Ralph’s challenge: he had no budget for these and could only use props he already had at home. Ralph’s work is done, and now it’s your turn to join in the fun. The final 5 videos are below. We hope you’ll watch them and vote for your favorite. The lucky winner will receive a $100 Amazon gift card! The winner will be announced here next Wednesday.

Ralph spent the better part of his summer vacation shooting and editing these movies. He says, “This was my first time working with someone else’s screenplays. It was harder than I thought, but it was also nice to experiment with different genres — I had scripts from young kids, kids my age, even parents — and I was able to film content I would never have thought of myself. I’d like to thank everybody who sent in a screenplay and I hope you enjoy the videos!”

1) Ninjello – Screenplay by Devin and Connor Mcrate.

2) Newman: Agent Unidentified – Screenplay by Hannah Lea, Monica Smith and Faith Fyles.

3) Fire Twins – Screenplay by Jake.

4) Talent Quest – Screenplay by Darby Smith.

5) Mary Rainbow – Screenplay by Barbara Weaver (age 5).

P.S. — Ralph also wants to acknowledge two Runner’s Up: Madelin Richins and Aubrey Maygar. Find more of Ralph’s videos on his YouTube channel.

UPDATE: Darby Smith, screenplay writer of Talent Quest, is the lucky winner! His prize will be emailed to him. Thanks for playing!

So fun to watch….reminds me of what my children use to do during the summer. All my children are grown and have children of their own now….we still watch the videos from time to time.
So nice to see children being creative.
Thanks this made my day.
Happy Day

How awesome! Great job Ralph, you are lucky to have so many siblings to cast in your films, haha! Not to mention the most beautiful backdrop ever…FRANCE. Well done sir!

These are great mini movies! Excellent job Ralph and with no budget? I am truly amazed at your talent! The Blair children all make great actors and actresses for yor movies! My vote goes to the fire twins-I love how you played all the characters!! I can’t wait to see more of your movies!

4 HeatherS August 24, 2011 at 10:24 am

My vote is for #4 Talent Quest! My daughter Darby is going to be insanely happy when she gets home from school today! Thanks Ralph for making such a great movie(s). I have had fun watching them all.

She gets home 2 hours earlier than normal today….heat wave here in Illinois!

These were so fun! Great job, Ralph. I laughed out loud at Newman Agent Identified–great acting by all. You are so lucky to have so many actors right at your fingertips :) I am going to pass these along to help you get more votes, too. Again, congrats!

So exciting to see that my husband and son are among the finalists – what a great group – Ralph is very talented!

My vote is for #4!

8 Everton Terrace August 24, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Oh these are GREAT!! I love that he did this and his siblings seem so willing so participate. Such childhood fun and imagination are inspiring. I had to vote for Newman because for starters, the acting was pretty darn good! They were so cute I couldn’t keep the grin off my face and the inserts – when it said “romantic montage” I started laughing and the montage was so cute then the “one day later”, well now I’m in stitches, the graphic violence warning just put it over the edge for me. Clever, witty and so well done. Just loved it :)

9 Esther August 24, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Congrats Ralph — all really great films! (@ Gabrielle & Ben — your kids are all so beautiful!!)

10 Design Mom August 28, 2011 at 3:22 am

12 Genevieve Gibson August 24, 2011 at 2:04 pm

We are totally impressed and entertained here in Colorado! Great job, Ralph! My 5 year old son loves the Fire Twins, my 3 year old girl loves Talent Quest, and I thought Newman was the best! Ralph, you totally inspired my son. Immediately after watching, he was coming up with a storyline where someone flies through the air and lands on a lucky star in Orion’s belt. :)

13 Ricki August 24, 2011 at 4:09 pm

These were all so great! My son’s favorite was Fire Twins. In fact, as soon as I finish writing this comment we’re going to watch it again (and then probably again and again after that)!

14 Janan W August 24, 2011 at 4:44 pm

These videos made my day!

15 Rose August 24, 2011 at 6:07 pm

These were so fun to watch with my kids. My personal favorite was Newman, agent unidetified. My daughters thought the Talent Quest was so funny and loved when the baby was jumping. Well done Ralph!

16 Robin August 24, 2011 at 7:04 pm

ALL of them are wonderful and so fun to watch. Ralph will surely be famous some day! You may have some actors and actresses in the family, too! Amazing imagination and good work!

23 Design Mom August 28, 2011 at 3:26 am

Oh man! Wouldn’t that be great? We are trying to figure out how to get Ralph some sort of internship/experience on a real movie set in LA — maybe for next summer. If you know anyone, let me know. : )

24 Lisa August 24, 2011 at 11:41 pm

28 Babara's mom August 25, 2011 at 6:53 am

Barbara is very proud of it! Thank you very much, Ralph & cia.
I am not good in campaigns so we will not go far in the poll. We are very happy though. :)

29 Jodi August 25, 2011 at 8:18 am

Well Blair family, you have certainly inspired my 7 year old son Alex to make his own films and I would certainly like to encourage this inspiration – which brings me to my question: What type of equipment did you use to film and edit?
Thank you,

30 Design Mom August 28, 2011 at 3:29 am

Hi Jodi! Ralph filmed most everything with a Flip Mino video camera, although there are a few parts filmed with his dad’s iPhone 4 as well. And the footage was edited on iMovie for Mac. He also used a big piece of green fabric for a green screen.

31 Trish August 25, 2011 at 8:41 am

We vote for #4! Go Darby! What a fun summer activity.

32 mandi@herbanhomestead August 25, 2011 at 10:13 am

34 Hannah August 25, 2011 at 1:19 pm

I enjoyed so much 2) Newman: Agent Unidentified, 4) Talent Quest and 5) Mary Raibow. But I liked them all, pity I could only vote for one…

43 Kristin August 27, 2011 at 10:02 am

Talent Quest sqeaked out a win, but we wanted you to know that Ninjello was a very close second. Great work, Ralph!

Finally got to sit down and watch all his hard work … well done!

47 justaub September 8, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Finally got to sit down and go back through weeks of designmom that i’ve missed! Wow, thank you for the acknowledgement…i actually blushed! I had so much fun envisioning what Ralph might do with the screenplay.

I am so inspired by all of the Blair children (and parents) and their creativity and have to say that i haven’t had a good laugh in awhile…until I watched Betty and Oscar’s scenes—CUTE!
