Little Black Dress Hunt

July 25, 2011

I’m in the market for a little black dress and I’m having the hardest time finding one that I love. Possibly, this is because I keep getting distracted by summery numbers like this one (on sale!). Do you have a favorite LBD source?

White House Black Market. They have my latest favorite LBD, classic sleeveless v-neck with a pretty flared skirt. Love it!

Have one made. If you have a trusted tailor you go to for alterations or have a friend whose a whiz at sewing and pattern making, this might be a fun LBD making adventure. A one-of-a-kind and exactly-what-you-want creation.

Have you looked over at Shabbyapple.com, yet? I appreciate their vintage styles and relatively modest cuts (I avoid having to cover up in layers for modesty’s sake). I found my LBD at Banana Republic years ago, but today I would probably hit a site like Overstock.com so I could have oodles of choices. Good luck!

Banana, J. Crew, White House Black Market, and perhaps Ann Taylor?
Mine two go-to LBDs are BCBG and Liz Claiborne. Liz Claiborne 1992. It still looks great! Wool crepe is the best!

Apparently we all shop at the same places?

What about this one at Talbots? I’m surprised how much I’ve been finding there the past few months… I’ve bought 4 new dresses recently. I’ve always been more of a J.Crew / Banana / Boden kind of girl…

I just purchased a LBD from Eshakti.com for my sister’s upcoming wedding. It is supposed to arrive today so I can’t speak for the actual dress, but their site is really great. You can custom order almost all of their dresses (lengthen the hemline, change the sleeves, change the neckline, and have it made for your exact measurements) for only an additional $8! They have a lot of great choices, and the dresses are pretty inexpensive to begin with.

If the dress arrives and fits me like a glove, I will be a lifelong eshakti customer!

I just ordered my first dress from Eshakti.com too. The other great thing was that on your first purchase they give you $20 off and they don’t charge you for you first customization.

I’ve had great luck with Nordstrom’s Adriana Pappell. They are modest and chic. I have a black dress from her, and a bright pink one. I love them both!

I’m so glad to see this post. I am going to be looking for the same thing – only I need one for me and one for my daughter! We are doing a big family picture this year with my inlaws’ extended family and we are supposed to wear coordinating colors for each family – like one grandparents wears red, and so does their kids and their kids…. so the photos has sort of a rainbow effect. Our family clothing color is black, so I’m thinking a cute black & white print would look nice in the photo. I am going to check out the stores listed in this post for inspiration!

J cREw – anything in the super 120′s lightweight wool will take you through the entire year, even summer.
Isabella Oliver for the go everywhere black wrap dress.

I have two great maternity LBDs from Old Navy. I realize this isn’t what you’re looking for, but wanted to pass along the recommendation. Simple, cute and well, cheap!

I see that no one has mentioned Boden yet – http://www.bodenusa.com (USA) or http://www.boden.co.uk (UK) – great quality, cute style, and there seem to be plenty of black options (at least on the USA site).

I second the recommendation of eShakti! Also, Modcloth.com- they have a lot of great dresses, but they sell out fast.

This popped up in my google reader after I read your post – it’s from Sensibly Styled, which is run by a couple of LDS women and they talk about where they get modest clothes. Looks like there’s a black dress or two in these boards :) Hope it helps

This might not help you much, but my two favorite places for little black dresses are Target & Decades in Salt Lake!

I’ve also had great luck with White House Black Market – nice quality, decent prices. You’ll get a dress that you can wear for years!

I *wish* I was in the market for a LBD. I am pregnant (not that I’m complaining about that), wearing my maternity clothes for the third time, and am desperate to find anything that is cheap and not what I’ve already worn twice before. I seem to become extremely fussy when I’m pregnant..! ;-)

Seeing as you’re so near the UK now, try Jigsaw, Jaeger and Whistles – once you find a design you like (sometimes the first two are a tad hit and miss, in my opinion) you can be sure it’s great quality. You should also take a look at Toast for more casual clothing – you might be able to order their catalogues to France, which is a treat in itself because the pictures are just gorgeous. The clothes are great quality, ethically made and very practical.

I love Zara too, though I can’t speak to current LBDs there. Excited to investigate eShakti–sounds fabulous! I just shopped for a wedding last weekend and found some good stuff at Nordstrom and Overstock (total surprise!) but not in black. Very tough for me to find a LBD with enough coverage. So I gave up and ended up sewing for myself–in charcoal grey linen, but it would be gorgeous in an all-season black! I found the greatest pattern! I second the sewn/tailored recommendation because you can get just what you want. Here’s a link to what I ended up with, including pattern details: http://www.aestheticnest.com/2011/07/sewing-dresses-for-wedding.html I love dresses. So easy to wear!

The first one gives you the LBD pattern online. How cool would that be to make your own or even make one for your girls. Too bad I don’t own a sewing machine. I too would love to find the perfect dress. Good Luck in your hunt!

I recently purchased the Mossimo Challis black tank dress from Target. It’s rayon, incredibly comfortable and cool-feeling, and has done very well dressing up with a belt and a blazer for work during the recent NY heat wave. And, so easy to wash in the sink and wear the next day – it would be great for traveling light.
