Hair Tutorials

July 7, 2011

image here plus a link to instructions

On Jordan’s last visit to our house, she introduced Maude to some really fun hair tutorial posts and now we are kind of obsessed. Braids! Updos! Feathers! We especially like the Hair Dresser on Fire videos.

For those of you who asked for instructions on how we did Maude’s hair for the French Greys photo shoot. You’re in luck! We followed the instructions in this video.

Know any great hair tutorials? Please share. We’re always looking for more!

P.S. — You could win an Oro Diamond necklace from Leslie Lewis Designs on the Design Mom Facebook page. The winner will be picked today (Thursday).

I found a tutorial for the hairstyle! I put the picture into google images (my new favourite thing!) and it directed me to a blog called Fashionising. com. the image is here:–Double-hair-knot-5227.html
and the tutorial is here:–how-to-hair-knot-5650.html
Have fun! :)
My hair is too short :(

So helpful, Steph! I’ll update the post with the source info asap.

this almost makes me want to grow out my short hair…but that middle phase is so daunting (and ugly) to get through. Lovely ideas.

The Beauty Department is also good for this kind of thing:
My favorite is the milkmaid braid which I gave an attempt to before leaving austria:

I tried to post this but I’m not sure if it went up! Eeks.
I love updos and they’ve been a lifesaver in the heat of NYC. Some faves:
- Braids and bows:
- Cute bun (variation on a ponytail):
- Heidi Braids! My favorite:

Well, I feel like you wrote this post for me. I never know what to do with my hair, yet I wear it up every day. It seems everyone I pass has their hair pulled up and it looks so simple and natural, but when I try I can spend all day reworking until my arms hurt and it never has that just-pulled-my-hair-up-real-quick-and-it-looks-cute look. I fret and fret and finally give up. Thank you sooooo much!

I love this! One of my goals this summer is to learn how to braid my daughters hair!

8 Design Mom July 8, 2011 at 2:39 am

That sounds like a perfect summer goal!

9 Monique July 7, 2011 at 8:32 am

I found this tutorial on Pinterest a few weeks ago. I get so many compliments when I wear this braid!

I love Reagan, and her hair tutorials are the best. Such cute ideas!

11 Design Mom July 8, 2011 at 2:39 am

Reagan couldn’t be more adorable, could she.

Cute tutorial on how to braid hair into a heart shape for Valentines Day at

13 Rena July 7, 2011 at 9:33 am

I love these hair videos – great resource! The necklace would look fab with a cool braid.

14 kristi July 7, 2011 at 9:39 am

I could have never imagined I would spend any time watching hair tutorials, much less the amount of time I just did. How cute is Reagan?! And such great hair! I need the tutorial on how to make your hair look like you spent some time on it, without actually doing much of anything. So fun – thanks for sharing!

15 Design Mom July 8, 2011 at 2:40 am

Hah! I need that tutorial too. : )

My favorite hair tutorial website is Hair Romance: She did a whole series of 30 updos in 30 days with simple instructions. This is the link to the series:
I think I her pictures and tips are easy to follow and her styles are kid and adult friendly. Very fun!

This is great! I have very long hair and live in super hot Texas. No more pony tails for me- now I have style! Thanks!

I have a friend (a stylist) that is currently running a 30 days/30 different ways challenge on her blog. There are some tutorials and lots of good ideas for twists and braids. You can see it here.

The blog

We love the HDOF tutorials and photos too! I love that I can do them on my 7 year old’s super curly hair and they still look great. Hurrah for messy hair dos!

21 Ana F. July 7, 2011 at 12:22 pm

I am in such need of easy and fun hair tutorials! I can’t stand going out anymore with my sloppy ponytail!

22 Carey July 7, 2011 at 12:51 pm

One I love to use is
Lots of cute styles for girls with long or short hair and at least a few that moms can use on themselves, too.

23 Melissa July 7, 2011 at 1:49 pm

I haven’t cut my hair for a few years, which means I now have long hair. I guess that’s what happens when you don’t cut it, lol! The problem is I have always been bad at doing hair, despite having lots of sisters and a couple of daughters. I’m definitely going to explore all of these links!!!

24 Melissa July 7, 2011 at 2:00 pm

I’ve been really into tutorials lately, my 5-year-old loves braids and updos. I also love Reagan and HDOF. She has amazing style and her tutorials are fun.

25 Sarah July 7, 2011 at 2:07 pm

Two I like:

Berlin Hair Baby has great videos. She’s great at adapting styles from magazines and popular TV shows.

Hair Thursday has a lot of great ideas, as well. I especially love these hand-drawn illustrations of summer hair styles. It’s beautiful artwork.

26 Design Mom July 8, 2011 at 2:41 am

Yes! Hair Thursday is another one of my favorites. Fantastic!

27 Natalie July 7, 2011 at 2:29 pm

Good to know, Keri! Thank you.

I have been doing hair for over 10 years now and I love everything there is about hair. I am on day 23 of my 30 day hair adventure. I am wearing my hair different for 30 days and blogging about it. I have tutorials, step by steps, product knowledge and more. I am working on making my blog a one stop place for all things hair and beauty. Please check it out and let me know what you think.
