It feels like it’s been ages since I posted a book of the week. I’ve missed it! Today’s book is Except If by Jim Averbeck.
It’s great. A super simple premise: what if what you are looking at, isn’t what you thought you were looking at. I find it sparks fun imaginative questions(What else could be in that egg?). And the illustrations are delightful. This is perfect for preschoolers or kindergarteners — Oscar and Betty both love it.
P.S. — Here’s another one of Jim’s books. And more books here.

My son was just on my lap and roared when he saw the dino cover! Ha! Maybe it’ll find it’s way into an Easter basket.
How cute, Krystle!
Exciting! I love your book picks. We are huge fans of In a Blue Room by the same author. Can’t wait to read this one.
We love In a Blue Room too!
This looks great. I’m excited to check it out from the library.
I hope you like it, Meg!
I’m a kindergarten teacher and found this book at the library. This is a GREAT one for teaching little ones about checking and clarifying predictions, as well as comparing and contrasting. I am pairing it with a minibook where kids make their own except if books. It’s a simple way to explain higher-level comparisons and analogies for young kids.
