Lost Roll of Film

March 29, 2011

I know this is an icy picture for a Spring day, but I love the story behind it! Todd Bieber found an undeveloped roll of film while walking in Prospect Park. He had the photos developed and then used clues from the images, plus a dose of social media, to track down the photographer. The story has an especially charming ending. You can read it here.

Do you have any great lost and found stories?

Thanks for the link, Ann.

What a great story – I love the ending – and perfect for you right now.

Flotsam, by David Wiesner, is a wonderful children’s book all about a boy who finds a camera at the beach. I wrote a review of it here: http://curlybirds.blogspot.com/2010/06/flotsam-book-review.html

It is defiantly worth checking out – we really love all of Wiesner’s books.

0h, I love Prospect Park! It’s practically our front yard…(and my husband proposed to me there too).

Thank you so much for sharing this!! I had heard this story but didn’t know the ending. It’s so nice to see that he found the taker of the film. As a photographer, I love this story! :)

Oh… and as a first-time mom I would love to know what are the must-haves for baby clothes!! I would love to see a line of clothing done by you.

My husband had a similar experience (on a less romantic scale) when he found a camera memory card under the freezer of the grocery store where he worked. He looked through the photos and figured out that the owner was an LDS senior missionary working in the Family History department, where a friend of ours also works. She was able to track the missionary down and return her card. The woman became a favorite customer.

Maybe I’ve watched too many movies.. but I’m wondering if he was worried there would be spy secrets on the film and that by developing the photos he’d put himself into the midst of a battle between life and death! LOL ;)

This isn’t nearly as exciting, but while cleaning up from a conference I had coordinated a number of years ago, I found a cheap digital camera that someone had left behind. It was fun to look at the pictures and try to figure out who it belonged to, and we did eventually track down the owner.

That was such an introspective and unique video, I loved it! It really is very Amélie.. un peu. Minus all the gnome pics. : ) I always find something new and inspiring here..

I had followed this story awhile back and I am SO glad to hear they found the photographer!
I don’t know how much this is a lost and found story but amazing non the less:
Vivian Maier: http://vivianmaier.blogspot.com/
She left thousands of rolls of undeveloped film and negatives in a storage shed and after defaulting on the payment the shed was bought and her work was discovered. Her work is BEYOND amazing. She will now be in history books. Some would say “sadly” she passed before being discovered, but I wouldn’t. She shot for her, because she loved it, and now we all get to enjoy it. Check her out. Her work is STUNNING.

I so very much love this story. Amelie is my favorite movie so reading about this just tickled my fancy. Also, I ran across a few canisters of undeveloped film of my own the last time I cleaned the basement and have been curiously sitting on them. I’m pretty sure they’re from my artsier fartsier college photography days. Just waiting for the right down to get them developed. Maybe when I need a bit more whimsy coupled with having the energy to go down memory lane for a little while…

Thanks for sharing this one!

My husband took a trip through Europe when in high school. He returned with several rolls of film, but one was forgotten until some time later. When he finally came across it, he took it in, only to have it disappear while at the developper!! They offered him a free roll of film to make up for it. Horrible! I hope he gets to return to those places some day and take new pictures.

When I was about 10 years old we were vacationing in Florida. While we were there my mom lost her pearl earring. We searched everywhere for it and soon she decided it was a lost cause. A few days later we were swimming in the pool with my cousins and someone bounced the beach ball out of the pool. I got out to go retrieve the ball which had landed in the thick Bermuda grass. All the sudden I stepped on something sharp and assumed I had cut my foot on a seashell. I looked at the bottom of my foot and there was the pearl earring! The post had actually gone into my foot and all I could see was the bloodied pearl shining up at me. “MOM!!!” I screamed “I FOUND YOUR EARRING!!!”
