My Head’s In the Cloud

November 30, 2010

pile of kid shoes

Friends. I’d love to hear your thoughts on The Cloud. Windows Live asked me to write about how technology helps make my parenting life easier, and the cloud is the first thing I thought of.

What is the cloud? That real-but-seems-imaginary internet place where these days, the information of my entire life lives. I’m clearly a big fan of the cloud. When I want to make a list (I adore lists!), I start in the cloud. When Ben Blair needs to see the list I made, he goes to the cloud too — from his own computer. When we are on an errand and forget something that was on the list, we access the cloud from our phones.

How did I function before the cloud? I can’t even remember.

My favorite document on the cloud contains all the bits of information I need to reference frequently, but haven’t memorized. The kids shoe sizes. Christmas wish lists. Notes on when the next ice skating session begins. Wherever I am, if there’s access to the internet, the info is with me. Because it doesn’t live on any one phone/laptop/computer — it lives in the cloud. When I see a pair of darling toddler shoes, I simply check my handy shoe size document to see if I’ve got the right fit.

Last December, we even moved our Christmas card mailing list to the cloud. Best decision ever. All year long, we’ve updated the list with new or changed information. Either one of us can do it from any computer in the house. Now the list is ready to go for this year. Easy peasy.

What about you? Are you a cloud user? Or are you more comfortable on the ground?

——-

Thanks to Windows 7 and Windows Live for sponsoring this post and giving me a great excuse to talk about ways to make parenting easier — it’s one of my favorite topics! You can click here if you’d like to learn more about the power of the cloud and what it can do for you.

Gift Guide #4: Sparkly

November 29, 2010

Gift guide number 4 has arrived! There are so many shiny baubles that have caught my eye, I decided to share them all in one place and theme the collection “sparkly”. Gifts featured here would work for anyone who likes pretty things. : ) Also. Check back later today and I’ll have another huge giveaway posted.

[ This holiday gift guide is underwritten by Pier 1. Pier 1 is your one stop for unique, imported decor, gifts, furniture, glassware and more this holiday season. I've included a few of my favorites from Pier 1 among the items below.]

gift guide design mom sparkly

- Penguin Classics. They’ve reissued the best of the best with gorgeous new covers designed by Coralie Bickford Smith. The perfect excuse to add to your library.

- Custom Notebook by Oh Joy!. At our house, we keep a journal specifically for Christmas memories. Anyone who wants to (me, Ben Blair or the kids) can take a turn writing down their holiday highlights to be enjoyed for years to come. I would have this notebook printed with the word: Christmas.

- Metallic Ornaments. My favorite is the little nest with glittery eggs. I want a dozen of them!

- Paper Bowls. These are stunning. Available in gold, silver or copper — they are quite reasonably priced for a work of art. Wouldn’t a line of them be pretty on a windowsill?

- Twirl Bow Cuff. Ms. Spade can’t seem to get enough of tidy little bows. Neither can I.

- Stencil 5 Print. It measures 20 x 25 inches and is hand-printed with a 5 from the Eames Stencil font. The five can mean anything you’d like it to (may I suggest high five!). It’s just so cool.

- Quartz Pinata. It’s over the top, but it will make your New Year’s Celebration the raddest one ever.

- Clutch by Aviva Stanoff. Wouldn’t this be fun to carry? It would elevate any outfit.

- Hayworth Mirrored Chest. I’m kind of obsessed with mirrored furniture at the moment. This piece is on sale for $249!

- Penguin Ornament. Isn’t he handsome and serious?

- Snowflake Pillow. This will add some light and shine to your house and look just right till Spring arrives.

- Wraparound Ring. I covet this.

- Crystal Wing Flats. It’s difficult to own too many ballet flats. And these would make your jeans and sweater ensemble feel put together.

- Wishbone Necklace. I’m sure you know someone that can use some luck this coming year.

- Glitter Garland. You’ll never guess what it’s made of.

- Tulle Sequin Dress. For your daughter. Because she likes sparkly things too.

- Rose Cut Diamond Rings. Have you heard of grey diamonds before? They are new to me and I think I love them.

- Recycled Bottle Votive. These are beer bottles reborn with a coating of antiqued silver. A pretty way to decorate your house throughout the year.

Welcome to the 2010 Design Mom Holiday Giveaway Week. Today’s giveaway is going to amaze you. You’ll find prizes from Terrain, Custom Toy Portrait, Hello LuckyMerryMakers and Jo Totes. Take note, Friends: WINNER TAKES ALL. I’m not even kidding. One winner will win everything I describe below. There are so many fun prizes, it’s like a giant early Christmas! If you win, you can share with friends or keep every last item for yourself (I won’t tell a soul, I promise). Take a look. But you might want to sit down first. : )

blooming flower gift Terrain garden home holiday

From Terrain, the picturesque home and garden shop created by the Anthropologie people, the winner will receive all four of the Holiday Blooming OfferingsThe Burlapped Hellebore. The Winter HeatherThe Tree Bark Orchid. And The Lemon Cypress. Each plant is prettier than the next. They’ll look gorgeous in your home through the holidays and beyond. If you’re new to Terrain, don’t miss the vintage section. It’s my favorite.

custom toy portrait original painting

From Custom Toy Portrait, the winner will receive two custom paintings. Each painting will be 8″ x 10″ and will feature the beloved toy of your choice. You’ll send photos, and Custom Toy Portraits will send back original works of art. Even the most plastic-y toys will turn into gorgeous pieces worthy of a hallowed place on the nursery wall. Don’t believe me? This is a perfect example of elevated kitsch. You’ll love having a permanent record of Mr. Bunny before he disintegrates or loses all his stuffing.

holiday cards letterpress Hello Lucky vintage photo

From Hello Lucky Stationers, the winner will receive a $200 gift certificate. Now is the perfect time to order your holiday photo cards or luxe holiday letterpress cards. How great to get your cards ordered and sent off with plenty of time to spare. Or. Maybe you need sweet birth announcements or a stash of super-cool greeting cards. You could even use the certificate to purchase a gift for someone you love — like personalized stationery or these adorable card kits that make perfect hostess gifts.

picture book doll MerryMakers

From MerryMakers, the winner will receive 15(!) adorable plush toys based on popular picture books: Pete the Cat, Llama, Llama, How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You?, Otis the Tractor, A Visitor for Bear, Ladybug Girl, The Snowy Day doll, 5 Little Monkeys finger puppets, Ella the Elephant, Bad Kitty, Where is the Green Sheep?, Walter the Farting Dog, Katy Duck, Aliens Love Underpants doll, plus the Dog and Bear set. That’s enough toys for your kids, your favorite nephew, and all the neighbor kids too. I think pairing a MerryMakers doll with a matching book makes a wonderful gift.

The Snowy Day doll (and book) is a treasured favorite at our house — maybe we should have a Custom Toy Portrait made of him.

camera bag handbag jototes stylish

Last but not least, the winner will receive three stylish camera bags from Jo Totes. Three different bags in three different styles — Rose, Missy and Scarlet. Jo Totes are ladylike, vintage-inspired bags designed to safely carry a camera and a spare lens while leaving room for things like a phone and wallet. I think Jo Totes would work as a daily handbag, at a photo shoot, or even while traveling. And I love that the padded interior can be custom fitted to organize everything I like to carry. If you win, you could use all three bags and coordinate them with your favorite outfits. Or share the spoils with your friends.

Well now, did I wow you with these prizes totaling over $1000? Want to win it all? Visit TerrainCustom Toy PortraitHello LuckyMerryMakers and Jo Totes and leave a comment below. You only have 24 hours to enter — tell your friends so they don’t miss out. The winner will be posted tomorrow (Tuesday). Good luck!

DIY: Bottles Full of Light

November 29, 2010

bottle christmas lights twinkle DIY

The other day, I wrote about attempting to drill through glass and I finished up the project this weekend. I think it turned out beautifully — I love the idea of bottled light!

These would be pretty by a wintery window or under an entry table. I like the way the gold paint makes the bottom of the bottles look misty and glow-y, even during the daytime.

I’ve got a ton of images and DIY instructions below if you’d like to try this too. For tools and supplies, I started at my local True Value. (Lately, I swear I’m in there every single day.)

Me + Samantha Bee

November 28, 2010

Remember when I mentioned I was able to meet Samantha Bee at eBay? And that she was hilarious? Well, I just got a link to the footage — it even stars Baby June. Made me laugh! I’d love to hear what you think.

Also. Ebay has challenged me to send an Unwrap Attack to a fellow blogger. I am scheming who I should send to, and what I should send. It’s got to be so cool or so funny that it will blow their mind. If I had a bazillion dollars to spend on gifts this year, I would send this. Wouldn’t it be crazy to walk outside and find it in your driveway?

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 25, 2010

vintage turkey image illustration

Hello, Friends! Thanksgiving is officially over at our house. The kitchen is cleaned. The leftovers are in the fridge. The linens are in the wash. And the kids just pulled out the box of Christmas books. I was remembering how morning sick I felt last Thanksgiving, and comparing it my healthy appetite today — and I find myself feeling emotional about how quickly another year has passed. Is it just me, or is time flying by at a particularly race-y speed?

This year, I’m thankful for the safe arrival of beautiful baby June, for my roles as wife, mother and blogger, and I’m so grateful for you, Dear Readers. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind words. They are always a bright spot in my life.

I hope your day was full of beauty and that you were surrounded by family, friends and good food. Happy Thanksgiving!

Ask Design Mom: Potted Christmas Trees

November 22, 2010

Question: Hi Gabrielle. I’m trying to find an alternative to our fire-hazard cut Christmas tree this year. Artificial trees don’t appeal to my taste; I really prefer living breathing things over synthetics. I’ve seen companies online that sell living, potted Christmas trees, but they’re not very affordable. Has Design Mom seen any other cool house plants [...]
