Optical Illusion Tape

October 5, 2010

My morning was spent with Oscar at the dentist. Poor Oscar. His teeth are literally rotting out of his mouth. My dentist assures me it’s genetic and I can personally vouch for Oscar’s good brushing and flossing habits (even mouth wash!), but this sort of thing always feels like a parenting fail. Mostly, it’s just awful to see your child in pain.

He has another consultation tomorrow, and a tooth extraction scheduled for Thursday morning. Sigh.

On a lighter note, check out this optical illusion tape. Wouldn’t it be funny to receive a hinged box in the mail? Also making me happy: we’ve outgrown our tiny kitchen table and I just found a new one! It’s round and industrial feeling and I love it. The table will be delivered this week. I can’t wait to see what you think of it.

What fun tape!

Poor Oscar – I feel his pain! I had constant tooth problems until they took my wisdom teeth out…when I was 27! My teeth were just packed in so tight plus I had bad dental genes. Now I have problems with old fillings falling out or cracking my teeth. : (

Poor Oscar! You are a great mom btw.

LOVE the tape! Thanks for sharing!

Henry’s teeth also rotted out — he had four crowns and two fillings on his fifth birthday. And while the dentist assured me that it was not my fault (NICU antibiotics got him) I still felt terrible.

(We’ve been cavity-free for five years, though, so hooray for that!)

Love love love that tape. Must get some.

Ugh. I have the same problem! My son brushes twice a day, flosses, and eats zero candy (except at Halloween and birthday parties, of course.) and, like poor Oscar, has a set of teeth like Yuck Mouth. Remember that cartoon character?

Poor Oscar! It really is genetics with teeth! I had braces for 6 years. boo! But I’m happy with the result! (Thanks dad!) That hinged tape is so cool! That would be so fun to use! I can’t believe how real it looks!

Poor Oscar. My daughter had to have two of her baby front teeth capped because the enamel was so thin and she too had perfect oral hygiene. It is so hard to watch them suffer.
Lighter note – I’m in love with the tape – love love love. Going to go and look at the rest of the line now. Thanks.

That hinge tape is the coolest tape I’ve ever seen. I’m so sorry for Oscar. I have a sone like that too and he has such anxiety going to the dentist.

I’m sending Oscar web kisses. I hope he feels better. This will make him such a strong man when he grows up. I’m talking Hercules strong… or Superman strong… whatever he can relate to.

What are you doing with your old table?

Promise not to laugh? Our kitchen table is actually an old desk. Can you believe we have 8 people trying to crowd around an old desk? When we put the plates on, there’s no room for the food. : )

Don’t feel bad about Oscar, my son had the same thing happen at 4 years old. At his first appointment his teeth were perfect, not one cavity. Our next visit, 6 months later, was a disaster…8 cavities, rotting teeth…it was horrible. Well, needless to say, he needed to be sedated to have all the dental work done and it was not fun, made me heartsick. But 2 years later perfect teeth, no more cavities, just a bump in the road we had to deal with. Thank goodness for good dentistry!!

Our little fella had faulty enamel, so our story is very similar to the others here. It is always very sad to watch them go through pain and hardship.
After the surgery, he was up and all happy once the anesthesia wore off. Me on the other hand, I was a total wreck for days. Seriously, I think parents are the ones that come out with the trauma. Children are so resilient!

Poor Oscar :( It’s so hard to see little ones in pain! Hoping he feels better soon, and that all the dentistry goes well.

The tape looks so neat! What a fun way to dress up a package.

Cool tape! But I’m here to send my good wishes to Oscar. Poor guy! My husband and I count ourselves lucky that we couldn’t procreate. One reason? The teeth on his side of the family. When my husband was a preteen he had a tooth grow up into his nose. YES. His nose.

Oh dear…poor guy! My daughter went through a lot too and her newest pediatric dentist has suggested that she start chewing Xylitol gum or mints in between meals. Of course she’s thrilled after years of being denied gum! I’ve only done a little research but it seems safe for children, a naturally occurring sugar and it does something to change harmful bacteria in the mouth. You can find gum/mints/mouthwash at Whole Foods. We’re trying it for now….

Whatever happened to the big table you guys made? I LOVED IT! I’m shopping to a vintage industrial feel table and can’t wait to see what you found!!!

I’m so sorry for poor Oscar! My brother and I both suffer from genetic tooth problems, and my teeth break off and crack constantly. My brother had TONS of dental surgery as a little kid. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone…and I’m crossing my fingers that my children don’t have our bad teeth genes.

I have bad teeth too. Something I’ve almost finished reading is dentist Weston A. Price’s book “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration”. It’s notes on his self-funded research. Pretty fascinating. It’s gotten me to eat much healthier if nothing else :0)

Hey Gabrielle! Oh I feel for you and Oscar! My middle daughter has been through some of the same thing… she had to have 6 caps put on her molars when she was five due to grinding – I was a total wreck during the procedure while she was under anesthesia and while she was recovering. Now she’s a total trooper with a spacer that was required due to the caps, even though it means she can’t have gum! She has totally surprised me with her resilience!

As for the tape – TOO COOL! love it! The coolest package we ever received was from my husband’s friend who lives in India. The package came wrapped in a cotton fabric, and was SEWN! with thread to keep it closed, and there were red wax seals on the seams to ensure privacy/security. Looked like it was from an ancient treasure chest and could only contain the most wonderful goodies. It didn’t, but boy did it spark our imagination! Wish everything that came in the mail looked like that!
Have a wonderful day!

argh! my 4 yr old son went to the dentist Monday, after complaining of tooth pain in the previous week…3 cavities, 2 more on the way. i feel horrible! HORRIBLE! he’s 4?! and yes, he has such good hygiene. he brushes, we brush, we floss his teeth (we just added the mouth wash/rinse per the dentist rec). and it did not matter one bit hearing the dentist tell us how it’s normal/genetic/his teeth are really close together/blah blah blah — i feel fully responsible as his mother. HORRIBLE! squeezes for Oscar. it totally blows.

I have had a billion cavities and I am so so careful about brushing and flossing and all those good things. I used to feel really bad until I met my husband who brushes once a day and NEVER had a cavity in his entire life. What?! His mom gave him fluoride for years because he was a preamie. His siblings never had fluoride and they’ve had tons of cavities. I sure it’s a combination of genetics and other things and I know a lot of people are against fluoride but I am not taking my chances on my kids. They both het fluoride.

I hope Oscar gets to go to those cool pediatric dentists that have flat screen TVs on the ceiling so he gets to watch movies while they work on his teeth.

if you haven’t heard about xylitol, i would do some research on it. my husband has had HORRIBLE teeth that his dentist attributed to genetics.. countless cavities, fillings, root canals, etc. We read this (totally corny titled) book “Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye” with very skeptical minds.. just hoping we could find something that might help. The book introduced us to xylitol and things have been much improved since! You can buy xylitol products in most health food stores and even purchase it in its raw sugar like form at most of them as well.

xylitol is the best (gum, toothpaste, mouthwash). my little guy (6years old) just had a check-up and no cavities!! for the first time! I don’t believe all that genetic, sugar, flouride talk…. It’s likely bacteria and xylitol starves bacteria. Seems to work for us.
