Eternally seductive – France and French properties are just so enchanting aren’t they!” I lived in France for a year and part of that time my abode was a 6 man frame tent – still – it did nothing to dent my love of the country – in fact it enhanced it as I was so close to nature.

Thank you for such an evocative photograph – what dreama (and maybe) reality are made of!

I just began reading your blog and have become consumed by it….the thought of living abroad is one I carry with me every day since we moved back from Mexico 5 years ago. I have a young son and would like to grow my brood abroad. I’ve been a foreigner for almost half of my life and its an experience that only enriches the lives of children and strengthens the bond of a marriage and family. Go you!

I am just seeing this and am so happy for you! My husband and I are doing our first trip along these lines because we too can both work from anywhere. Ours is only for a month tho. So cool to see you doing it with kids and for a whole year! I am interested to hear how you do it all. Myhusband said “the Four Work Week” has all kinds of tips for doing this safe and well. I’m looking forward to using your site as a good resource too! Yea!

Go for it, Blairs. A year abroad is the best gift you can give your kids and yourself to open up your world view! Evan and I did it when our oldest was 1. We lived in Italy for 6 months and loved every minute. It has really shaped our lives in so many ways. Unfortunately, we were unable stay longer but the experience we did share has had lasting profound effects! FYI: We leased a brand new Renault car for a great price including insurance. Would and have! I actually picked up and married a Brit, taking my 3 kids in tow then adding 3 more (so far…). We picked up and moved ‘abroad’ back to the US for 18 months and now are returing to England and buying a holiday home in France because it’s where we think of ‘summer’ and the in-laws are already there too. I love it, the pace, the lifestyle, the schools, school Nativity plays….not so crazy about the harder driving test or price of imports like Reese Cups but Lindt and the TGV makes up for it ;o)

You should go for it! Amazing! I lived in Prague, Los Angeles, now my husband and I are living in Salzburg, Austria and are already planning the next move to Barcelona, Spain.. and maybe in the future somewhere in Asia (probably island of Koh Samui) We are absolutely addicted to traveling and would love to live everywhere! Definitely changes your view of the world!!!!

This is awesome! You should totally do it! I lived in the south of France for two years in several different cities. Carcassonne, Montpellier, Perpignan and St. Raphael which is near Cannes. It was amazing. Where did you find this house? I’m interested in going back and maybe trying to the north. Was it a particular website? Darling blog, btw!

I just want to say that my dream was also to live abroad. My husband is German and we met in Texas. I have 2 small children, however, not to burst anyones bubble. It can be taxing to be abroad, and the ‘dream’ can sometimes not ‘relate to reality’. Its great to have dreams, but remember even moving to a new country albeit Western just like America, can be very challenging. And with a Family, finding time to learn the language, unless you already know it, can be stressful and tiring…along with watching 2 small kids. It is also a tremendous experience, and you learn to qickly rely on yourself. But all the things one takes for granted that you can get so readily back home, it takes time and months to cultinvate finding.
