I really liked this post on Laura Day about buildings that incorporate a lot of reuse — like a building made from giant orange shipping containers and a store display wall made from old printing plates. So interesting. One of my daydreams is using reclaimed materials to build a home. I wonder if I could blend a home made from unusual materials into a typical neighborhood or if it would be too weird looking?

i love the design! i would love to live in such an open space.
Isn’t that a neat building? I wonder one acquires a giant storage container…
You can actually buy used shipping containers on ebay for $1500-$2000, sometimes less. My husband had some schemes about this awhile back.
There’s an interesting Wikipedia article called “Shipping container architecture”

Thanks for the link, Andrea!
I have that daydream, too. In mine, I imagine my house set off by itself–a field for kids and dogs, wide expanses for gardening. Neighbors an acre or two over. No worry about fitting into a neighborhood!
I’m sure you’re right, Erin. Wide expanses would be the way to go. : )
I totally have that dream but my house is by a like and hidden by lots of trees. We also build it all as a family. I have a feeling that the kids are not having the same dream.
Hah!
Done right, it’s awesome. Done wrong…well, I’ve seen a few! Love the storage containers. You could just get industrial strength magnets to hang stuff up! : )
Oh! Magnets would be fun in a house built of metal. : )
I saw the shipping container house on HGTV…I think it was a show on extreme homes. Very creative, and I agree – when it’s done right, it’s awesome.
I think there is a myriad of reuse materials for homes available…though I can see how these containers seem to fit the structure bill pretty easily. I’m going to volunteer at the first annual Reuse Conex Expo (http://reuseconex.org/about) coming up in October. I’ll let you know if I see anything great!
I’ve always had a similar dream. Or taking an old warehouse and making it into a home for our huge brood. But instead I live in suburbia, and dream of how a large family could do the loft thing and still make it work with school, sports and life.
The orphanage that we adopted our babies from in Ethiopia was comprised primarily of buildings that were made from repurposed blue shipping containers. It’s pretty incredible what you can do with them.
