J.Crew

June 30, 2010

Friends. I’m ready to start buying clothes again. My body hasn’t quite caught up with the idea. But my eyes are aching for something new and fresh to put on. These are some images from the latest J.Crew catalog that are inspiring my clothes shopping.

In the top pics, I’m loving the use of menswear shoes. I think they look so sassy. And I bet I would get tons of use out of that denim button down with the waist tie. Doesn’t it look super versatile?

Here, the outfit on the left looks so wearable and comfy and classic. I would want to put it on everyday. I’m not sure how I feel about the outfit on the right. What’s your take on a bustier over a tee? Can this really be pulled off by regular people?

And here, the outfit on the left is my favorite in the whole catalog. I love it to bits and plan to copy it. Except the shorts. I can’t do short shorts, so I would replace them with pants cut like the ones in the right-hand image. So cute! Also. I heart the blue bag.

What about you? Where are you finding shopping inspiration these days?

In December in Budapest, it’s cold. I mean, really cold. And on December 5th 2001, the roads were snowy and ice hung from the trees. I was 9 months and 10 days pregnant with my first child. A girl we had named Reagan. It was a good pregnancy. I took yoga, ate well (and plenty), and loved being pregnant. But like all overdue moms, I was ready.

Reclaiming Summer

June 30, 2010

Kelly of Make Grow Gather is trying her best to reclaim the summer feeling of her childhood. Isn’t that a fun goal? She’s got all sorts of great lazy summer content going on. Food, crafts and an occasional guest post in the mix. I contributed an imagined “perfect summer day” here. You can find all the summer posts from her main page.

Family Vacation Photos

June 30, 2010

Maythi sent me a link to Lisa Lucky’s website. Lisa is a photographer and she posted lots of pics from her recent family vacation to southern Florida. They’re pretty spectacular. Plus, her three boys are adorable. I wonder if this area is being affected by the oil spill?

Family vacations are on my mind. We head out of town on Friday morning. Are you going somewhere this summer? Taking a few days off?

Awhile back I featured All In A Day, a beautiful book illustrated by Nikki McClure. Happily, Nikki has a new book out that makes a nice companion to the first. It’s called Mama, Is It Summer Yet? and it features the same great style of illustration. The text is sweet and true to life — the little child can’t wait for summer and asks over and over and over again if it has arrived yet.

My little ones have been asking over and over again about our trip to “Cousins Week” for months now, so I can absolutely relate. What are your kids looking forward to or asking you about?

Nook Pebble Mattress

June 29, 2010

What are your thoughts on crib mattresses? I just heard about the Nook Pebble series. Apparently, it’s intended to be used without any sheets or typical baby bedding. Instead, the surface is both wipeable and breathable and the baby is supposed to sleep directly on it. I haven’t seen one in person, but I think the colors are pretty and that pebble surface looks super touchable.

What about you? Did you seek out an organic mattress? Or are you more about going through your parent’s attic and using the same crib you slept in? If you no longer used standard baby bedding, would you miss it?

You can find the whole Nook product line here.

Are you going to BlogHer ’10 this summer in New York? I can’t wait to attend. I’ll be speaking on a panel with Grace from Design*Sponge. And it will be my first flight with Baby June. But I think I’m most excited about the party that was just announced yesterday:

Kirtsy is teaming up with BlogHer to create the the much-anticipated Voices of the Year Gala and Art Auction.

Voices of the Year Gala & AuctionBetween now and the party, the Kirtsy team and BlogHer will work to transform words and images of the Voices of the Year into works of art in a variety of mediums. These pieces will be featured, displayed, and showcased at BlogHer ‘10 in New York on Friday evening, August 6th, immediately after the community keynote at a reception and Gala.  Then, THEN!, these inspiring works will be auctioned off to benefit healing action in the Gulf Coast, raising money to help fund the long-term recovery efforts the Gulf will need.

Kirtsy wants to get you involved. If you’re an artist, graphic designer or photographer, Kirtsy would love you to contribute your artistic vision to interpret the powerful words that have been chosen as winners. Are you interested? Send an email and let Kirtsy know. Seriously. You’ll get the 411 about the art display and how you can participate.

How rad is that?!

Here’s what BlogHer says about it all:

We’ll start at BlogHer ‘10 with a Gala that is a feast for the senses. Not just fine food and divine drinks; not just music…including a special guest performance still to be announced…but also a feast for the eyes, as Kirtsy will be transforming the entire space into a gallery featuring custom-commissioned art works that evoke the spirit of our Voices of the Year finalists. Those works will be auctioned off post-conference, with proceeds benefitting the Nature Conservancy, so that BlogHer ‘10, and everyone there, has the opportunity to contribute in some part to what will be a long recovery process for the Gulf.

P.S. — Wondering why I’m so excited about this? Two reasons: it’s going to be an amazing event and I’m one of the founders of Kirtsy. : )

Cleaning My Phone

June 28, 2010

Hello Friends! I have to tell what happened this weekend. On Saturday, Sweet Betty wanted to do something nice for me as a surprise, so she took my iPhone and scrubbed it down with soap and water. Surprise! It is now clean and shiny. And it no longer works.

It’s not all bad news. As soon as they are back in stock, my phone will be replaced with the new improved iPhone 4. In the meantime, if I’m not answering your texts, you know why. : )

Did you have a good weekend? Do anything fun? Have your kids ever “cleaned” your phone?

P.S. — I want to thank you for the healthy wishes for June. Happily, she was feeling much better by Saturday morning. Also. Don’t you love this image? Find more of these charming illustrations at Juime. (Via Stellacake.)

A Few Things

June 25, 2010

Hello Friends. Sweet little baby June has her first cold. Poor thing. She’s being a great sport about it, but she had a rough night last night, and now we’re both sort of fumbling around in a fog. The big kids are headed to the pool this afternoon. While they’re getting their splash on, I’m hoping June and I can snuggle up on the sofa and do absolutely nothing — while the bulb syringe keeps us company. : ) In the meantime, here are a few things I’ve been meaning to share:

I write a daily post for Babble’s Family Style blog. Here are my posts from this week:

- A perfect adoption gift.

- The handsome-est baby teether ever.

- I’m gaga over these retro tie-on sun visors. So cute!

- Mymo plush toy animals — with removable tails. Dibs on the elephant.

- My favorite printable paper dolls.

And here are a few more things:

- My nephew sleeps in a closet.

- I’m craving big square glasses.

- What are your thoughts on nail stickers?

- Fun with sharpies. Via The Violet Hours.

- The making of a piggy bank. Neat.

- It’s been a year since Michael died.

- A perfect summer bedroom. (This is where I want to cozy up with June.)

- Music video matchboxes.

- Camel pillows.

- Striped buildings brighten up sad neighborhoods in Brazil.

- Can’t wait to try this! Gorgeous DIY fabric tape.

Thank you so much for dropping by this week, and thanks also for your enthusiasm for the Love The Place You Live idea. Can’t wait to launch it! I hope you have a lovely weekend — meet you back here on Monday. I miss you already.

kisses,
Gabrielle

Information Is Beautiful

June 24, 2010

Brooke sent me the link to Information Is Beautiful. It showcases well-designed infographics — which sounds totally dry, but I find it addictive. Information that I would normally care less about, is suddenly interesting to me because it’s been made visually compelling. Take a look at this “World Map of Touristyness.” What about you? Are [...]

A Baby Story from Jessica Ranjbari

June 23, 2010

June 23, 2010

Two giveaways this week! One today and one tomorrow. Up for grabs today are 5 year-long subscriptions to SafetyWeb. Woot! What’s SafetyWeb? Let me tell you. Project Repurpose

June 22, 2010

Look how cool. Talented Miranda took a bunch of her clothes and remade them into more interesting pieces. The best part? She staged an unofficial (meaning no permission) photoshoot in Home Depot to show off the new wardrobe. How fantastic is that? My favorite remakes: Bonus, I love that Miranda is a clever writer. I [...]

Always Fits

June 22, 2010

Have you heard about Always Fits? It’s a new site offering gifts for the ladies. I think the collection looks fun. Sometimes charming. Sometimes kitschy. The custom state pillows made me smile. (I’d be willing to bet that Texas is the best-selling of these.) Can’t you think of the perfect person to give one of [...]

Old Glory Antiques Fair

June 21, 2010

We’ve been in Denver for a year now and sometimes I’m embarrassed by how little I know the area. So I’ve made a goal to remedy that fact. On Saturday we stopped by the Old Glory Antiques Fair — apparently, it’s a Father’s Day Weekend tradition in our area. We actually arrived just after it [...]
