Happy Memorial Day

May 31, 2010

Isn’t it nice to have a day off?

On our schedule: Ben Blair is out, picking up donuts for a late breakfast. Then we’re taking the kids on a walk to the nearby cemetery to place some flowers. Last of all, we’re preparing for a BBQ tonight. (And if we can squeeze it in, I’m hoping to get the car washed as well.)

What are your Memorial Day plans?

I’m thinking of going to my grandfather’s grave and planting a flower fo rhim and for my grandmother – pink carnations for grandma and a rose for grandpa – a Mr. Lincoln if I can find one for an inexpensive price. It was his favorite rose. Then maybe Jennies for som e out of this world ice cream. But the cemetary will take a while. I always have a lot to say to them.

Thinking of and honoring my military loved ones, my grandparents, and a close friend who passed away early this year. Will stop to put some flowers on her grave. Then finish up bedroom cleaning and decor refresh. Rest. And lastly head to pool party with a lovely group of friends who I really consider family. Might even do a quick shop for a new couch on my way there.

we went to my mom’s to swim, it is hot here! Then five minutes down the road to my mother in laws for a picnic lunch. My husband is working on his sisters house, it is a major project.. but right down the street from my mother in laws so we go to see him too. now home for naps and then maybe a cook out for dinner… or maybe a cook in…. I hear thunder :)

Just catching up on some reading, going to the gym and cleaning. Nothing too crazy :)

Slept in, met family in home town for parade, then went to parents house for BBQ and swimming in the lake. Now we are home and thinking of taking a nap. Later we are cooking on the grill and then going to watch our oldest grandchild play baseball.

I wish! No holiday here – casualty of working in the tourism business. But I am planning on whipping up some yummy burgers on the grill when I get home tonight.

We started the morning with donuts as well. We are keeping it pretty simple and allowing the kids to lead the day (for once). My oldest decided we need to have a Memorial Day party. He made signs, had me print out some appropriate coloring pages, and plans popcorn for the main event. We may do a moment of silence at 3pm, but we’ll see. ;)

We are celebrating my baby’s 5th birthday and enjoying a breezy day at Grams’ and Papa’s house, cleaning out the camper from our first outing this year.

I will be thinking of the Raymond Smith and his family that you present in your photo. Along with Rob Yllescas and Paul Syverson who were personal friends of mine who have died in the current wars. Makes me sad!

This weekend, we went to a birthday party for a little 3 year-old friend, had out-of-town friends visit, ate lots of donuts (!) and celebrated a church member’s return from his service at Guantanamo with a pot-luck supper. Today, my little family and I went to the community pool so I could spend a couple hours feeling weightless!

Thank you for this special tribute. I am a military wife and I posted some thoughts and pics this Memorial Day. Thank you for your support and thanks to all the families who have sacrificed so much more than I can ever imagine!

We live in Metro Manila and the only ounce of greenery we have is the American Military Cemetery across the street from us. How fortunate we are! We admired the plus 20,000 headstones and names remembered in this place as we wondered and photographed the Philippine and American flags.
God bless America and those who so honorably have loved this country so much.

Did I miss the winners from the Mother’s Day giveaways?

Hi Gabby! We had a great day – marched with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in the Scarsdale Memorial Day Parade, had donuts afterwards, went for our first swim of the season at Lake Isle, then caught the last half of Michael’s baseball game. With gorgeous weather the day was perfect but of course we missed the Blairs – say hi to all!

It was also my birthday weekend so we grilled out with friends, ate lots of cake, ate tapas for date night and I had a girls night out to see Sex and the City part 2. That is very sweet for you to have the kiddos honor the soldiers at the cemetary. My tot is a bit young for that, but will have to find a way to incorporate the true meaning of the day someday.
Best,
Tina

Most grateful for the ones who sacrifice so much for freedom, but you should have seen me on Memorial Day. Worked on a $22 clock for FIVE hours. Trying to make my Marshall’s clearance find look like an antique. But I was too anal and too impatient. Wiped it clean this morning and started over. Finished in 30 and love it. Yesterday…just wasn’t meant to be! Maybe I should blog about it. Creative types don’t always get their creations right the first time. It’s a process! xo…Linsey
