She took the package, looked at me suspiciously, and unwrapped the book. She screamed and cried at the same time, it was hilarious :) By this time, my father was extremely confused. For him, I had a new tennis racket cover(he’s an avid tennis player), that said #1 Grandpa. He opened the gift and smiled for the next hour. That’s our story :) I need to come up with a special way to announce our second :)

It’s hard to be away from family when you have a baby. But thankfully there are so many differnent and creative ideas to make every moment special.

She knits, sews, paints, cooks… everything. I bought her some sew-in labels that say “Made with love by Grandma.” I’m going to tell her I was at the craft store and saw something that she’ll be needing soon, then hand them to her. She’s going to flip ;)

It was around Christmas time and for the Grandma’s we put the ultrasound picture in an “I Love My Grandma” frame. My mom looked at it, took about 30 seconds to register and then said “is this…YOU?”. For my dad, who was also my marathon training partner, on one of our runs I casually asked him if he liked that his grandchild was joining us on our run. He was shocked and started crying…

We had moved 14 hours away with our three sons. While living away we found our we were expecting. Since no one was around we decided to wait and surprise our families when we saw them all the next month. EVERY time we would get together with another part of our family it would involve a meal. My sons would wait until someone had taken a big bite of food to announce we were expecting #4, which of course led to choking on whatever they had put in their mouth!

and someone else did a “jibjab” and put it on facebook (or you could send it to your friends via email). They already have one child, so they put all three of their pictures and for the new baby wrote “baby and their last name”. It was really cute, here’s the jibjab site: http://sendables.jibjab.com/

When I was pregnant with my first, I wanted a whole month to tell my family – it was agony! But I knew I wanted to surprise them at Thanksgiving, so I had to wait. I wasn’t going to be there, so I mailed them a package and said to open it right before they sat down for dinner. They thought it was candy or some treat.

Inside the package was eight onesies, each drawn on (with sharpies) with “I Love Grandma” or “I love Aunt Suzy,” one for each of my parents and siblings.

It was perfect – they were completely shocked and there was lots of tears! And then they had a great reason to even more thankful. I really treasure that memory.

We had an early ultrasound and put it in a card along with a gift bag that had I LOVE GRANDMA and I LOVE GRANDPA bibs. But be forewarned – talk about needing their reading glasses. They thought the ultra sound was a doppler radar of a storm or a hurricane!! “What is this? An approaching hurricane? WHAT? I don’t get it!! Is it a a tropical storm?” I guess they just didn’t have ultrasounds “back then” and they had no idea what it was. Good thing we had the bibs! I can’t imagine if I’d paid to have it put on a cake and they couldn’t figure it out…

The ultrasound tech at my OB’s office was kind enough to do an ultrasound for us (gratis!) even though it was so early in the process – and she managed to get a pretty great shot. We took that ultrasound photo and had it scanned onto a large birthday cake with “Congratulations Grandparents-to-be” written on it in icing.
When we all gathered for my huge family birthday dinner, the cake was brought out with just the usual happy birthday singing.
I must say, it took a while for those with reading glasses to catch on, but it was priceless to see the wave of understanding move around the table as each person got up to see the cake more closely.
Loads of fun!

We wrapped them and put them at each person’s place at the table. Before we served dinner we told everyone that the packages were for a game and that everyone had to open them at the same time. My mom was the first to realize our news, but mostly because my sweet mother-in-law was too busy trying to figure out how to win the game!

For my first baby we actually showed up at each of our parents house with Chinese take out. We had switched out the notes in the fortune cookies to different phrases like “A small miracle is in your near future” etc. etc. We read each of our fortunes out loud and it took our parents about 5 cookies to finally get the point. It was so great! We all laughed and cried!

We waited until we had an ultrasound picture and then I scanned it and attached it to an email. I called my parents and told them that I had found a family picture, but that I couldn’t place the person and wanted to know if they would help me. Then I emailed the ultrasound while we were on the phone. My mom opened the attachment and was completely puzzled: “This is a picture of a baby,” she said. I just sat and waited for her to make the connection, but she didn’t. Finally, I said, “Mom, it’s MY baby!” She was so surprised and excited! To this day, she still talks about how she had no idea that ultrasound would have belonged to me!
