Collections

January 12, 2010

Each day of this year, Lisa is posting a photo or drawing of a different collection. Stopping by has become a short, but always interesting part of my day.

I collect Caldecott books. What do you collect?

Hi, I remember a post from a long time ago about a birthday parade for a young child. Came back to your site to find it but I can't see any way to do a search on your blog. Is that functionality gone for a reason? Or is it there but I just can't see it? Please help! Thanks!!

I collect pressed souvenir pennies. My husband gave me one on our first trip together and now I have about a hundred of them in a mason jar that sits on a ledge in our living room. It's a great conversation piece and reminds me of my travels. I love searching for those machines that create them when we visit someplace new and it feels like the biggest score when we finally find one.

I've started a collection of Newbery award-winning books for my oldest son, and a collection of the Caldecott winning books for my youngest. I've also started a collection of vintage globes for their bedroom. I collect cookbooks and we have so many golfballs in our home I think my husband must secretly be collecting them!

I collect old letterpress blocks, in initials and numbers that somehow relate to my life or loved ones. A photo of some here http://aspiringartistry.typepad.com/aspiring_artistry/2008/09/little-lovelies.html

THanks for sharing that link. I collect New Canadian Library paperbacks from the late 60s/early 70s. In fact, it got to be a bit of an obsession so I decided to start reading them and blog about it here: http://www.roughingitinthebooks.com It is a very niche blog – Can Lit isn't for everyone (although everyone – myself included – likes to make fun of it).

Business cards. And bells. Two very small items, so even if the collection gets huge, it's still easy to display. I keep my business cards in glass jars, vertically stacked and shown in the jar so you can see all the thin edges. And when someone asks me what souvenir they should get me from their travels, I tell them to get me a bell.

We have two collections as a family: one magnet from each of the states we've visited together, and books. We have over 2,000 books; browsing used bookstores is what we do together as a couple.

I collect smashed souvenir pennies. I smashed my first one at the Royal Gorge when I was seven or eight and now have over 200 in my collection. They are a cheap souvenir when I travel and it's an adventure to find the machines.

Scrapbooking supplies, especially the beautiful paper, rings (I am so into rings right now), and children's books. I seriously could buy every book at Barnes & Noble much to my husband's dismay. Thankfully my kids love books.

L.M. Montgomery's works, even the very hard-to-find collections of short stories. Good, old-fashioned, sweet, funny stuff. Now if I could just go visit PEI.

I live small, so I try not to collect, but I do have a small collection of Prints of Sisters

I have added a few since this photo was taken, actually 2 photographs (not prints). But, it helps me to embrace and celebrate my family-2 girls! sisters!

These responses make me so happy! Cobalt glass. Vintage art supplies. Cake plates. Pressed pennies. Gnomes. Canadian Lit…

You're all so inspiring. We should start a flickr group with photos of our collections. Or a Mr. Linky. Or something.
