Liz Gumbinner’s Pregnancy Advice

October 2, 2009

Most books have it all wrong.

Enduring pregnancy isn’t a matter of getting enough sleep, sucking on ginger candies, or kegel marathons.

Really, it all comes down to storing up a repetoire of snappy comebacks to stupid questions.

Mostly the ones I received were about my size — I was too small, too big, way too big, and should I really be eating so many chocolate chip pancakes?

In Gabby’s case, no doubt it will be about the size of her beautiful family. And while she’s far too gracious to use any of these, I would have some stock answers ready to go. Just in case.

-Yes we planned it. It seemed a shame for that last seat in the minivan to go to waste.

-Yes we planned it. I hear we get a free toaster with every sixth baby.

-Yes we planned it. Now only 12 more to go!

Those forty weeks may seem long but really, they’re a small price to pay.

After all, look what we have to show for it.

so true.

I always hated the "O, so good that you have a boy, AND a girl. Now you can be done!"

As if we were waiting to be an even number with both genders.

And, "My you look so big for such a petite girl." Thank you for calling me short and fat, wonderful.

LOVE This. I love how people almost WANT to hear you say – "oh we totally didn't want this kid". Just wish I could legally slap the person asking "was this planned?"

Congrats. Enjoy. Truly a blessing from God – whether its #1 or #19

I always thought I wanted a big family, but now that we have one and a half (due in Feb)- we really think two is it for us. I've had a fantastic, blissful experience as a mommy thus far, but I just feel content with my couple. We'll see. We have lots of years left to decide (hooray for youth). That being said, I'm totally impressed with people that are fantastic parents to large families. Not everyone can pull it off. Making babies is one thing; parenting is a whole different story. Shoot, parenting one lil' guy has pushed me to my limits at times. But Gabby can do it. And who wouldn't want her for a mommy? That baby is one lucky kid. Hooray for baby #6. Congrats.

Beautiful, Liz!!

"Are they all yours?" Yes! I am so blessed.

"You have your hands full!" Better full than empty.

Of course you have two more than I, but those are my favorite thoughts I think in my head when approached with such exclamations!

Okay, I loved your stock answers, and I am committing them to memory. We have three, I really want another, but I am anxious about what all my friends (who have two) will react. I shouldn't be, but I am. We have two girls and then a boy; how many times I heard, "Oh, you got your boy so now your done." Ugh. I love this site because I get a little intimidated by more kids, I think maybe I can't keep it together. I love to see that Gabby does.

SO TRUE! I love this post. And I hate that "did you plan it?" question. Love the comebacks and I'm putting them on file for next time. . .
