Locks of Love

Last week, 9 year old Maude had her hair cut off and donated to Locks of Love — a program that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. When the stylist was finished and Maude stood up, she said, "I'm a whole new girl."

How great that we can reinvent ourselves with something as simple as a haircut. Or even some new lipgloss. And. How great to have kids at an age where they can consider the needs of others.

Way to go, Maude! I have done it twice now and I think it is just the neatest form of helping others feel a little more comfortable with themself in a very uncomfortable time. I am so proud of you!

Very cute Maude! She's getting so big! I donated some locks after my last pregnancy (before it all fell out postpartum). You're probably going to get a hilariously creepy thank-you postcard from Locks of Love. If you get it, you'll know what I'm talking about...

Just last Tuesday I did the same thing, cutting off 10 in for Locks of Love. It's a great feeling knowing that your giving of yourself literally for someone who needs it more than you do. It's even better when someone so young decides to make that decision, because it was a hard one for me to cut off hair that I have had for so long.

I love that we have kids that are willing to perform such selfless acts. I agree with Maude wholeheartedly; even though it was she who gave up her hair, she got something so much more meaningful out of the experience.

This was a day that changed my life:

My 11-yr-old daughter did that last year! I wasn't sure I wanted her to cut off all those gorgeous tresses, but she was determined to donate & had been growing it out for a while with that in mind. (She looked really cute with short hair, as does Maude!)

hooray for maude who IS a whole new girl for she has experienced the joy of the ultimate gift of giving. she will surely carry this memory for a lifetime.

my daughter and her friends did this together when they were going into 10th grade. (talk about drama ; )

i bought them all locks of love beanies and bracelets.

looks like they make a necklace now with 25% of the sale going to locks of love. check it out http://www.locksoflovenecklace.org/
