November 2008

A few of the things I’m thankful for this year:

1) People who read Design Mom. This community makes my day, every day. I love the email you send with suggestions and ideas. I love the comments you leave. I love that this is a positive, happy, creative place. Thank you for your kindness. Thank you for telling your friends about my blog. Thank you for reading.

2) Good news about Nie Nie’s recovery. For those of you following the story, Stephanie is awake and has been moved to a rehab center in Utah. Reading updates about her progress makes me tear up. I love the Nielson family. Which reminds me. There are still many, many events and fundraisers happening on Stephanie and Christian’s behalf — like here and here and here. You can read about them all at Nie Recovery.

3) Creative People. I’m inspired by the makers and doers around me. Crafters. Artists. Patient mothers. I love knowing so many people who are building a life they love. Brick by brick. Like Noelle, Molly and Stephanie — who promote and support artists every year at the Beehive Bazaar. And gain their own personal satisfaction by doing so. I heart creativity in all it’s forms.

How about I try to demonstrate a little (tiny) bit of my gratitude with a Giveaway. Featuring seven companies started and run by creative women. Eleven items. Going to eleven different winners. Here’s what’s up for grabs:

- 100 mommy calling cards from Sophie & Spice
Because motherhood is a job. You may as well make it official with some cards.

- Two bags, one large and one medium, from Wet Happened
Wet in fact does happen. And now you’ll have cute, practical bags to carry the wet mess until you can get to the laundry.

- Two wipes cases from Made by Angie
If you’re going to carry a wipes case. And you are. Why not carry a cute one?

- A tutu and cape from Ellie Bellie Kids
Every kid in the world thinks they’re a superhero or princess or both. Make it real with a fab cape or tutu.

- A Tiny-Tales kit and babysitter notes from Tiny Tales
Record keeping made easy. Tiny Tales does the thinking for you.

- A plush blanket from Mairzey Dotes
Because 9 times out of 10, when something happens to your little one, the first thing you reach for is a blanket. You can’t have enough.

- And a Birth Necklace Square — with up to two pendants — from Julian and Co.
Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. A little bit of understated bling never hurt anyone.

Pretty things for pretty ladies. Made by other pretty ladies. Fabulosity all around. Please know that my gratitude for you is completely and totally sincere. You make my day. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

kisses,
Gabrielle

One Laptop Per Child Giveaway

November 25, 2008

Have you seen the latest contest at kirtsy? It’s probably the most Thanksgiving appropriate contest ever. Kirtsy has teamed up with One Laptop Per Child to give away Four XO Laptops! That’s right. You could win one of four laptops. Honest and true.

How? Easy: Spread the word about One Laptop Per Child by sharing their link (http://laptop.org). Email it. Tweet it. Blog it. Put it on Facebook. Call a friend. Do whatever it is you do.

Then tell kirtsy what you did by leaving a comment on the kirtsy blog or on the kirtsy entry, like: “I twittered about OLPC.” And you’re officially entered to win.

Winning a laptop is a fantastic thing. But OLPC’s programs are even more fantastic — their whole mission and purpose is to get a laptop into the hands of every child in emerging countries across the globe. Every. Single. Child. OLPC understands how a computer can give advantages and offer opportunities in a life-changing way.

See, the little laptops they make are amazing. Super sturdy. Designed for children’s hands. Easy to care for and maintain. Self-networking. And they send them for free to children around the globe. These laptops can’t even be bought for personal use — they are strictly for giving away.

With one exception. Over the holidays, OLPC is holding a Give One, Get One (G1G1) promotion. You buy a laptop for yourself or for someone you love, and OLPC will donate another laptop to a child in need. In fact, this G1G1 campaign is the only way to actually buy one of their laptops. Period.

I’m a big fan. If you were reading Design Mom a year ago, you may remember my post on OLPC. We participated in the program last December — and our kids love our XO. Your kids would love one as well! Bonus: I’ll bet it’s the best price you’ll find on a laptop anywhere.

If you are able to get involved with the Give One Get One program this year, you won’t regret it. If donating a laptop isn’t an option, then I hope you’ll get involved by trying to win one from kirtsy!

Share the OLPC link. Tell kirtsy about it. Then you’re entered to win. Done and done.

At the beginning of this post, I mentioned this contest is particularly Thanksgiving appropriate. This is what I mean: I am thankful every single day for the opportunities and friendships that have come into my life through a computer and the internet. And I’m thankful for companies like One Laptop Per Child that understand the power that computer ownership can bring to a child’s life.

What a cute idea — check out the charming brown paper lunch bag alternatives designed by Rebecca Peragine over at Print*Pattern*Paper. With velcro and drawstring closure. In six pretty patterns. A good stocking stuffer for your school age kids. And during summer vacation, they can use the same bag to carry their rock-leaf-dead bug collection.

Oh my goodness! I’m so excited. Remember when I told you about Hands On Kirtsy? It’s a new program kirtsy is launching — featuring gatherings across the country where women can learn how to use web 2.0 services like twitter, delicious, flickr, kirtsy, facebook, stumble upon, rss feed readers, tumblr. . .

The first Hands On Kirtsy was held a few weeks ago in conjunction with the Startup Princess Retreat. And the 2nd Hands On Kirtsy is happening on Monday. This coming Monday, December 1st. And it’s coming to New York!

If you’re in New York and you’re wanting an introduction to social media, we hope you’ll attend. Maybe you’ve read some blogs. Signed up for Facebook. But you’re not sure what all the fuss about Twitter is. Or how one would use Stumble Upon.

Then Hands On Kirsty is for you.

Hands On Kirtsy sessions are like the funnest class you ever took. No stress. No judgment. Just a bunch of girls learning what’s up on the internet these days. Real hands on learning. Trying things out. Learning new skills. At the end of the session, you’ll feel so in the know! You’ll be able to use verbs like tweet, kirtsy, stumble and flickr without being tempted to giggle.

Extra fun: all the kirtsy girls will be in town! Laura is coming from Texas. Laurie is coming from North Carolina. And Gwen is coming from Colorado. And we can’t wait to hang out with everybody. Best part: it’s free dollars and thirty free cents. For reals. The details:

Hands On Kirtsy
Monday, December 1, 2008
6:00 to 8:00 PM
Hudson Hotel, in the Studio
356 West 58th Street, New York

Too advanced for Hands on Kirsty? Already a social media pro? We get that. But we want to see you anyway. So immediately after the Hands on Kirtsy, we’ve got a fabulous meetup happening. In the same building, at the Hudson Bar.

Kirtsy Meetup
Monday, December 1, 2009
Hudson Bar
8:00 till you go home
356 West 58th Street, New York

For sure, if you’re in the area, you need to come by and say Hello! Oh. And send me an email or leave a comment if you can make it to either event — I’d love to know who’s planning to come.

UPDATE: You can register for your FREE tickets to either event here: http://handsonkirtsy.eventbrite.com/

Zoom Albums

November 24, 2008

Have you heard of Zoom Albums? Zoom Album offers kits for little (3 inch x 3 inch) hardbound books that you can put together yourself in literally minutes. Ellen Marden, the how-to face behind Zoom Albums (she even demo’ed them on Martha Stewart), attended the Startup Princess Retreat. She was lovely — full of energy and great ideas. She would sit and put together these little books while she chatted with you and you could see first hand, just how easy it was.

Basic 411: using Zoom Album’s free software, you drop photos onto their template. Then you print the photos on their special perforated sheet that’s made to work with any inkjet printer. After that, it’s fold, fold, fold. Stick, stick, stick. And then you’re done.

Watch the videos here to see how quickly they come together — or you can check out a video of Ellen’s 9-year-old daughter, Nancy, putting one together for her brother’s soccer coach — so cute!

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzK3MN5NkFk]

The possible applications for these have my imagination in overload. You could make little photobooks of each grandchild — the perfect gift for Grandma and Grandpa this Christmas. You could make one book every birthday as a mini-record of your child’s life. You could scan drawings your child made and turn the drawings into a little illustrated story. You could make an album full of photos of your toddler’s favorite things, and then keep it in your handbag to entertain your child during errands. How about party favors?

And did I tell you, you can print custom covers? Text, photos, whatever you’d like. Or if you’re more of a scrap-book-ey person, you could make the covers from pretty paper and embellish them to your hearts content.

I’m so excited about these! And so glad I met Ellen. I feel like I should buy the kits in bulk, because I know I’ll want to make dozens of these little albums. (Also, because the price point drops to about $6 a book if you buy large quantities — nice.)

It’s a great new week — Thanksgiving is so close — I can taste it already. And it was wonderful to arrive at my desk this morning to find there were 1300 entries on last Thursday’s giveaway. I think this may be a record at Design Mom — 1300(!) entries. Good to know you like Epson Printers.

Big congratulations go to: MMW who said, “May the gods of Random.org pick me. Thanks Design Mom.

Hooray for MMW! Please email me and I’ll put you in touch with the sponsor right away. Thank you all so much for participating. And a special thank you to Epson for sponsoring the Giveaway.

Advice Please

November 21, 2008

I’ve been looking for a new heavy coat and found this beautiful red one at TJ Maxx the other day. I’m loving the shape, loving the details, and loving that it was a bargain for an overcoat at $60. Plus, it’s from Esprit which made me happy — I don’t think I’ve worn anything from the Esprit line since junior high. : )

Only problem, it’s a size too big (and they didn’t have a smaller size). Other only problem, will I like it less after Christmas when I’ve had my fill of red?

Do I keep it? Or return it? Feeling so indecisive…

Schoolyard Gardens — by Guest Mom Rochelle

November 21, 2008

Our local school is trying to get a schoolyard garden and I’m doing what I can to support the effort. Ideally, it would be something really lovely — like the edible schoolyard that Chef Alice Waters helped create at the MLK school in Berkeley, California. The Edible Schoolyard website lists 20 good reasons to support [...]

Book of the Week — The Day They Parachuted Cats on Borneo — posted By Guest Mom Rochelle

November 20, 2008

As someone with a career based on the outdoors, ecology is on my mind. A lot. And I try to pass what I know on to my children. A great book for introducing kids to ecology, and the knock-on effects that our actions have on our environment, is called The Day They Parachuted Cats on [...]

Justin Hackworth Photography

November 20, 2008

While at the Startup Princess Retreat I was lucky enough to have my photo taken by Justin Hackworth. It was one of those everything-comes-together sort of things. Early in the conference, kind of out of the blue, Gwen Bell said to me: we need to get you a new head shot. (Ummm. True. And also. [...]

Celebrity Mom

November 19, 2008

Big news! Huggies has officially named me, and some of my favorite peeps, a “celebrity mom.” It feels good. But honestly, I always thought “celebrity” involved more limos/Escalades. In my case, it means Huggies posted a video of me being interviewed by Ralph. Hot! You can view the video under the Celeb Mom Spotlight tab [...]

Tree House Update — by Guest Mom Rochelle

November 19, 2008

You may remember this time last year, we had just started our tree house endeavor. Phase 1 (thanks to grandpa) was the platform, Phase 2 was to make it safe (i.e.add a railing) and paint it. Here is where we are now. I love the way the rope looks and we went with red to [...]
