Soap Nuts

I just read about Maggie's Soap Nuts in the August issue of Real Simple. Apparently there is a Chinese Soap Tree, that produces soap nuts. Not kidding. You put a few nuts in a little cotton sack and throw them in the wash. And voilá: clean fresh laundry, no harsh detergent. I'm absolutely fascinated.

Available at Whole Foods. Or. If you don't have a Whole Foods in your neighborhood, you can also pick them up from Amazon. 50 loads, $18.99. If anyone tries them, I'd love to hear a report!

I feel like I have to add: The packaging is not for me. It's clearly designed to appeal to an earthy, hippie sort of person — which I can only sometimes identify with.

If the packaging was more modern, even a little industrial (think sleek white with science-like markings) I think it would make a nice contrast to the earthiness of the actual soap nuts and I think I would trust the product a little more.

Sometimes it surprises me how much packaging affects my purchase decisions.

The soap nuts work good and make my clothes soft. I have used them for a year and recommend them to my friends.
I was a little put off by the box design but then figured it was those scientific/industrial factory products that would occasionally make me break out in a rash or start sneezing from the smell. I feel clean with Soap Nuts. Praise Maggie !!

I really hope someone who's tried these will post a comment! I'm very interested in hearing what they thought! I wonder if they leave any scent?

I second the eczema comment. We are plagued by it over here. Has anyone had any luck with changing to this detergent?

We used those in India all my childhood until I came to the US and they are called ARITHA in India. They have a natural detergent quality to them. they are fabulous. Thanks for posting about this Gabrielle.
