We finally have a mantle after 7 years of hanging our Christmas stockings on our entertainment center.
But now I face the dilemma of how to hang the stockings? We have a wood mantle that is painted white so it's not really something we want to poke holes or nails into. I have seen these ideas for stocking hooks over the years but now I think I will have to make a purchase. I like these very simple ones from Pottery Barn but I also think these natural wood ones from LL Bean are nice too.

Is it possible to place hooks underneath the mantle? That's what my mom did and we had a white fireplace...
PBK has ones that have a little picture frame on them...I put the kids pictures in them and it is fun to see how they grow!! THey love seeing how little they were the year before (I use a pictre from Christmas Day for the NEXT years stockings...).
I like the hook idea too.
Do most people how ONE stocking they use year after year or do you switch it up? I kind of switch it around........ just wondering
I have a nightmare about those stocking holders....my little one could pull on the stocking and the holder would come down on their head? Does this ever happen?! So I tie the stockings to the stair railing before Christmas and lay them on the floor on Christmas Eve, but it's true, it would be much funner to actually hang them by the chimney with care.
Since I've been married, I have never lived in a house with a mantle. Total bummer. I hang our stockings down the banister.
Although, Jordan linked to some article from Domino (I think) where a designer had installed a mantle in an apartment with no fireplace and just placed a mirror in the fireplace opening. It's got me thinking about where I could put a mantle in my own fireplace-less house. . .

I'm sure you have solved the problem about your hooks but I love ours. Just a board that I lay down on top of the mantlw with hooks out the end. I drape the top of the mantle with black velvet so the board doesn't show.
