Recycled Crayons

August 17, 2006

Love this idea from Martha Kids for recycling smaller bits of crayon into custom-shaped oversize crayons. A glass jar of these custom crayons would be so pretty on a shelf in the art room.

EDIT: Looking for heart shaped bake ware? Try these silicone ones from Target. Or this one from Wilton (it’s deep, so I would only partially fill it for this project.) Has anyone seen a heart baking tin like the one pictured above? My came with Maude’s Easy Bake Oven.

Thank you for your beautiful blog. I love it! I have no idea how you do what you do. You’re truly an inspiration to me, even though I don’t know you.

I found your blog through my friend Shelese. Her cousin-in-law is Jenni. Anyway, you know how one blog leads to another…

You can find me at love and giggles or you know what i’m talkin’ about.

And I’m with lizzy…where do you find the heart mold?

Thanks, again.

Lizzy and Namona,

Good luck on your quest for Heart-shaped bakeware. You may have already found similar items, but you may want to check the links I added in the main post.

And Namona,
Thanks for the compliment. I’m glad you love it.

First I have to let my child use crayons.

I’ve done this before in regular muffin tins. The clean up is easy if you put some aluminum foil in the bottoms of the tins. My boys loved this project.

I do this with mini or regular size muffin tins and put cupcake paper liners in, then it is not so messy at all.

My grandmother used to make these crayons when we were little and we could use them when we went to her house. I loved them and thought they were so beautiful!

Love the heart shaped molds. Just be really careful when you do this project or something like this could happen.

I’ve actually done this- I made these crayons when Aaron was just a toddler and, naturally, I didn’t clean up right away after Grace was coloring with them, and he chewed and chewed and when I finally found him, I had a bigger mess than when I started. Oh well. I did find that melting the crayons (I melted them in the microwave) really made my kitchen smell like burned wax- which is unpleasant. The crayons were a hit though.

beautiful. i wonder if this would work with weighted cookie cutters on a baking sheet. i have that fabulous set of animal shape cookie cutters from williams-sonoma and would love to try that.

What a neat idea – I hate throwing away crayons when they get broken – this would allow us to save them and reuse them in creative ways. I think, too, these would make great gifts from one toddler to another – and they’d certainly be original. :) This is one I’ve gotta try!

You can all find heart-shaped tin molds at the dollar stores. You buy them in packs and they are for cup cakes, but I use them for whatever- even jello jigglers!

I found the silicone heart bakeware on Amazon.com – they come in petite and a few bigger sizes.
