Book of the Week: Sock & Glove

I'm so enamored with this book
by Miyako Kanamori. I've totally got a book crush.

The cover is charming and I opened it expecting a simple but excellent how-to book, and found it was so much more. This is no skimpy volume. Before the instruction section even begins, the author spends the first 40 pages introducing us to the 13 different sock-and-glove animals — and their outfits — through a happy story and excellent photography.

The creatures,
including monkeys, elephants, piglets, bunnies — even a fish, have the perfect detailing and are just too yummy for words. It's my two-year-old's new favorite book.

I can't say enough about the photography and styling. Just a really well-done book. I wish I could show you every page.

I haven't tried my hand at making any of the toys yet, but I have been setting aside potential sock candidates. I'm thinking these could be fun for my older kids to make and give to the babies. We'll see. . .

Find it here from Penguin Publishers.

April & May Giveaway Winners

When you win a Giveaway here at Design Mom, you're invited to send in a bio and photo so we can get to know you a bit better. This is a fairly new tradition — we've only done this for a few months — but I already love it! And today's the day we get to meet some of the lovely (and lucky) winners. There were 4 winners in April and there were 18(!) winners in May. Here, 13 of the April & May winners are featured:

Hello, my name is Rachel. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest near Seattle. I love to travel. I have a degree in graphic design and an insatiable love for photography. I am a new mother to my little baby Vienna. I love peonies in the spring, playing music at all times, cooking lovely treats, and working them off through biking, yoga + running.

My name is Laura Barlow and I live in Larchmont, NY with my two daughters and my husband Ben. Here are 5 things about me...
1) I love vacations...I LIVE for vacations. Not sure if it's the actual destination or the escape from every day life that makes me so excited. Vacations are a priority in my life and I'm always planning our next trip. The perfect vacation to me is sitting on a beach somewhere. It doesn't matter where as long as it's warm, there's a good book and good company.
2) I love holidays and believe that each should be celebrated with a zeal and enthusiasm found in few. During the Christmas season I am often referred to as the Christmas Nazi which I take as a compliment because it means I'm doing my job!
3) I studied Home Ec with an Interior Design emphasis at college. At the time everyone laughed at my choice...who's laughing now! It has served me well and taught me many things that help me be a better mother.
4) I love being creative. Scrapbooking, sewing and these days blogging are my outlets of choice!
5) In my dream world, i would be a party planner. I love organizing events, planning parties and giving people an excuse to have a great time. Or I would open a fine linen store that sold beautiful bedding. I would call it Cloud Nine.

Joanne G:
I am a 30 year old stay at home mom to a beautiful, boy, James; born June of 2006. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration and a Masters in Art Education. My home is in WNY. The majority of my time is devoted to my son and adjusting to life as a first time mom. Yes, he is finally sleeping through the night! I try to use any free time I have for creativity. My latest projects revolve around sewing. I also enjoy drawing, painting, photography, reading, writing, and of course blogging here and here. I am married to Jake, the greatest man in the world & my soulmate, and we have one annoying but loveable pooch, Teddy.

Here's a bit about Angela Flynn:
Mother of 2 fantastic kids. Wife of talented artist, with whom I run Simply Silhouettes out of our dining room studio. Here are a few of my favorite things: magazines & catalogs, swedish fish, dishes, Everything but the Girl, fabric and the beach. Now happily residing in the Pacific Northwest after being a midwesterner for the past decade.

My name is Robyn Davie. My family and I live in a small mountain valley in the west, while building our home in a nearby city. I have been married for 12 years to a wonderful, brilliant man whom I love very much. A few months after I completed a BS in management we started our family, and I've loved being a mom ever since. We've raised our children (ages 1-8) while living in Salt Lake, Guadalajara, and Puerto Rico. I enjoy refinishing furniture, photography, and cooking. I frequent thrift stores to find treasures and use coupons obsessively. I've recently become vegan…most of the time. I love the shirt from Pronk that I won, and will continue being a faithful reader of Design Mom!

Kristy Williams
I am out of the country for a while, so I don't have access to any pictures of me at the moment. But here's a quick bio: I am a hopefully-someday-soon mother currently taking a summer to travel with my husband before relocating to Boston. Until last week I lived in Phoenix, Arizona and enjoy traveling, spending time with my family, and dreaming up what my house will look like someday.

After working in the marketing communications field for 7 years, Holly O. left that behind almost 2 years ago when she and her husband welcomed their first child. She spends her days scrapbooking, making cards, doing some graphic design work from a home office, and mostly playing with her little boy. In April, she added blogging to her list of daily must-do’s. A native of Chicago, she currently lives in the desert of the Southwest and, after 2 years, is still adjusting to the heat. Holly will welcome baby boy #2 in July.

Mona is an island girl from Saipan living in Seattle and staying out of the rain, mostly. She loves clean lines, the color "sea foam," and anything that makes her one-year-old laugh hysterically. You can find her at her blog, "Hello Insomnia."

I'm Kaila Lifferth. I have an awesome husband, Noah, and two adorable children (Gabrielle, 5 and Alex, 2). I graduated from university in vocal performance and now teach voice lessons out of my home. When I'm not teaching a voice lesson or running after my children (or cooking or cleaning or doing laundry. . .), I blog as factotum. In addition to blogging, I enjoy reading, traveling, or decorating my house. Oh, and I'm loving the giveaways!

my name is mere. i'm a new mom. i studied philosophy and hope one day to write children's books with philosophical themes with my illustrator husband. i'm going back to work soon and so my time consists now of preparing my husband in all things baby since he will be a stay at home dad. very exciting. my blog is here.

My name is Emily Spencer. I am 32 years old and I live in Utah with my husband and four kids. I am a registered nurse but right now I am home full time with the kids. I love being a mom and homemaker although it doesn't always come easily for me. But I am learning! When I have free time I enjoy cooking, entertaining, interior decorating, hiking, and spending time with family and friends...oh and reading great blogs like Design Mom. Someday, when I have even more free time I hope to return to some of my old hobbies - reading, singing, playing the piano, skiing, and playing tennis.

I am a 30 year old spunky and yet thoughtful, witty and yet wise (on occasion!) pastor's wife. I blog regularly about anything and everything as my hobby. I'm an energetic homeschooling mom of four little boys ranging in age from 1 1/2 to 7. I love to be outside when the weather is nice and would play team soccer if I still could! I am an American living in Canada. That's me in a nutshell.

I'm Elizabeth aka GardenGirl. From April until October I can be found in my English Cottage style garden. When I'm not outside tending my flowers, I can be found inside homeschooling and reading to my three kids. (Love your book recommendations, Gabrielle!) My husband and I will celebrate our 20 year anniversary this year!!! I'm also a huge advocate of adoption and lead an adoption support group/ministry at our church. I'm addicted to reading blogs and visit a wide variety. Design Mom became an instant daily read! I loved everything about it and THEN I found out they had give-aways! Icing on the cake:)

Giveaway: Lego Cufflinks by Jacqueline Sanchez

It's wonderful Wednesday. It's the end of May. It's time to look ahead to June. Let's do a giveaway for the men in our lives — to help us get in gear for Father's Day. The talented Jacqueline Sanchez sent me a link to her Forever Young line of lego-based-jewelry and I was an instant fan. So we set up a Giveaway for a pair of impeccably designed, finely crafted, absolutely happy LEGO CUFFLINKS!!

What's not to love? Legos are practically a symbol of parenthood. You can find them tucked into the corner of many a child-filled home. When you step on random piece in the middle of the night and muffle your scream of pain so as not to wake your slumbering children, legos serve as a not-so-subtle reminder that your priorities are in order, that your children are cherished.

These lego cufflinks let you wear your parenthood on your sleeve — like a badge of honor. Plus, they're a good compromise for the man who is all grown-up and working for his family's benefit, but still loves a good toy. But don't let the playful aspect fool you — all of Jacqueline's jewelry is exquisitely made and a bit extravagant. The winner of today's Giveaway can choose their cufflinks: red squared or black rounded like the ones above. Or. The winner can contact Ms. Jacqueline herself and she'll tell you the additional colors that are available. Her cufflinks retail for $150 — a perfect Father's Day Gift splurge.

Ladies, you're also in luck. Jacqueline designs lovely lego jewelry for Mom as well. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces rings. Everything made from the finest sterling silver — and plastic legos. Some pieces are blinged-up with diamonds and gold.

If legos aren't your thing, you'll definitely want to check out Jacqueline's other jewelry lines. She's a woman of many talents. She even offers a gorgeous bridal line and stunning custom work. What a fun find!

Thank you Jacqueline Sanchez!

Bocce

During our Memorial Day bar-be-que, the men gathered in a corner of the yard for a game of bocce. I love this game. Actually, I really know very little about this game, but I think the equipment is probably the most beautiful of any sport, and therefore I'm a big fan.

I was first introduced to the game under the name petanque by my brother-in-law Mark Sabey. He walked into the yard with a worn bucket full of heavy, etched, metal spheres and I quickly made a mental note that petanque ownership was a must.

After the initial introduction, I started seeing bocce sets all over the place and eventually figured out they were the same thing.
From what I understand, bocce is the Italian name for the game, and petanque is the French name. (If there are other big differences and I'm making a big sport faux-pas here, my apologies.)

This is a perfect yard game. Great for all ages. Easy to involve kids. You kind of meander around the yard as you play which is lovely. You can find sets pretty much anywhere. Target, ebay, Costco. But I've never seen one quite as wonderful as the aged one that captured my heart initially.

The amazing photo of the petanque player is from Someday Somewhere. Aren't those colors fabulous? The bocce set image is from Business Week.

The Stationery Show 2007

The stationery show was just wonderful. This was the first year I attended as a member of the press and it was the coolest thing ever. I could ask more questions, and more personal questions. And because I wasn't there to place orders, there was no sales pitch. It was just really, really good. I was able to have great conversations with about 30 different vendors/artists — a tiny fraction of who was at the show — but still wonderful. I'll be posting about many of these vendors over the next weeks.

In these pictures, you can see the registration area at the convention center and a pile of all the pretty business cards and brochures I picked up. I tell you, it was a feast for the eyes.

Quick Report

Two things:

1) Thank you to everyone who helped make Ask-Design-Mom-Week so much fun. I loved seeing dozens of brilliant ideas submitted by clever readers. There are still 2 or 3 questions that I haven't added my own two cents to, but I'll try as I have a few minutes here and there . . .

2) As I mentioned earlier, Friday morning I attended a fundraising breakfast at the UN for Rescue a Million. I learned a bunch. Initially, I was a bit confused by the group's focus on both children and the environment (do gooding based on PC?) but it was explained that by adding the environmental component — having in-need communities planting and harvesting fast-growing hardwood trees — that more funds became available for the children. I thought it was an interesting approach.

Also, apparently micro loans are typically offered only to the marginally poor — people who have once had a job but have fallen on hard times — who have some basic marketable skills. But one organization that presented at the breakfast was setting up micro loans with the poorest of the poor — the leper communities in India — with great success. I was really impressed.

Plus, it was lovely and interesting to be at the UN building.
I had never had opportunity to visit before. Adorning the walls throughout the complex are art pieces donated by UN Nations and representative of those Nations. I wish I'd had more time to explore.

Giveaway: Luxe Baby Set from Craftsbury Kids

It's Memorial Day Weekend. And although school doesn't let out in these parts for another several weeks, Memorial Day always feels like the start of summer to me. Which is something that should really be commemorated with an excellent Giveaway, wouldn't you say? So enter your comment right away to win a luxurious baby collection from Craftsbury Kids — featuring the legendary BINTH BABY BOOK, BABY BEAR SHOP TRAVEL SET, and a KATE QUINN KIMONO BODY SUIT!!

Craftsbury Kids has done an amazing job of becoming a go-to source for truly unique children's items. From their website: We offer a collection of remarkable goods for children. Sweet and elegant, many of the items are made by hand, all are a breath of fresh air in a modern gadget-filled world. With a quirky sense of playful charm and beauty, our toys, art, clothing and decor are the answer for parents who want something more.
And I'm in complete agreement. Craftsbury Kids has so many lovely items I've seen nowhere else. Let me tell you a bit about what today's Giveaway winner will receive.

1) The Baby Book by Binth.
Likely this is the most wonderful baby book on the market. I covet it for sure. I've blogged about it before, and I was so happy to see it in person at Binth's booth in the Stationery Show and meet the worthy designers who created it. Just as you might suspect, it was even lovelier in real life. It's entirely screen-printed and comes in an heirloom box — every detail attended to. This book retails for $110, which can feel like a splurge for many parents, so it's extra-nice that you can win this one for free!

2) Mother & Baby Travel Set by Baby Bear Shop.
Love this Mama Belly Oil and Cheeky Baby Butter — packaged together in coppery/white polka dot organza pouch — so pretty. Aromatic organic body oil for mom and shea butter baby creme for baby. Created by a family that was plagued by allergies, these products are as pure and luxurious as any you can find.

3) Kimino Body Suit in Clover by Kate Quinn Organics.
How yummy is this bodysuit in mellow clover green? It looks so cozy. I would put my baby in one of these every day, all year long. Made from 100% certified organic cotton rib.

Some of my other favorites at Craftsbury:

The Artfolio Drawing Tote (available in 3 great fabric choices).

An inspiring, varied and extensive collection of Wall Art.

Darling play Sugar Cookies.

So many wonderful products! Reading about the thinking and philosophy behind Craftsbury Kids is so satisfying. I like their image of a collection of toys made by artists and intended to be cherished and saved for the next generation. The majority of Craftsbury's products are handcrafted by independent artisans and small cottage industries. You can get to know the artists and companies behind the Craftsbury Kids Collection here.

Have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend! In addition to hanging out by the BBQ, you can ponder the perfect person to receive this amazing gift set. . .

Thank you Craftsbury Kids!

Ask Design Mom: Waterproof Bibs

Ask-Design-Mom Question:
Hello Design Mom! I have just been introduced to your site and I am LOVING it! I have been reading through the archives so that I can get caught up and not miss a single post. I ran across the "Let's Make Some Bibs" post (such a cute idea and so simple) when a thought came to my mind. I have a 6 month old slobber/teether who soaks through about 3 or 4 bibs a day — I can't keep her dry! Any suggestions of how to keep bibs from soaking through to her cute clothes, in turn keeping her dry? I have seen some plastic/vinyl lined ones in the stores, but would prefer something more appealing. I guess I could line my own with some sort of waterproof material from the fabric store. Any ideas? — Carly Farnsworth

Design Mom Answer:
Smart question, Carly. Drooling babies are a fact of life, but luckily the drooling stage is pretty temporary. Personally, I think your idea of lining your own bibs with a waterproof material is genius — you don't need my help at all!

But if you're really not up for a project, I would recommend keeping watch for oilcloth bibs like these. Oilcloth often comes in really fun and funky retro prints that are really appealing. And oilcloth will do an excellent job of keeping your baby dry.

Design Mom Readers, how do you keep your babies dry?

Ask Design Mom: Planting Flowers

Ask-Design-Mom Question:
Dear Design Mom. I'm recently married (okay, perhaps 3 years isn't recent, but I'm still getting used to the whole married life), and I married into a house. My husband owns this great ranch house that has a huge yard and is just screaming for flowers to be planted. What are the basics for planting flowers. When and what kinds should I plant. I really am just looking at low maintenance flowers that will look pretty and that will come up year after year. Thanks! — Becky

Design Mom Answer:
Becky, this question is especially timely for me. In fact this is the first year I've made a true effort at working on adding flowers to our yard — I'm experimenting with only red varieties. Since I'm no expert, I'll leave it to Design Mom Readers to give both of us their best hints, helps, guidance and links about flower planting.

Ask Design Mom: Fabric Storage

Ask-Design-Mom Question:
Design Mom, I assume I am not the only person in this pickle. I'm looking for ideas of ways to store my fabric stash in as small a space as possible, yet also in a way that lets me easily keep track of (and remember to use) what I have. My current system of plastic totes under my bed is definitely not working! (see the picture below) — Emily

Design Mom Answer:
I love seeing fabric stashes, Emily! Organized or disorganized, the colors and textures are so pretty. I want to put some more thought into this, but in the meantime, maybe some clever Design Mom Readers will share their own fabric storage solutions with us.

Every Child A Hero

The Stationery Show was amazing. A feast for the eyes. I'm still in the processing stage. I met many wonderful vendors who I'm just dying to tell you about. I saw many beautiful products that I can't wait to share. And it was interesting to be there with a press pass, instead of as a buyer or potential vendor as in years past — a completely different experience.

But the report will have to wait.
I received a last minute invitation to a breakfast at the United Nations this morning. A fundraiser by Rescue a Million to benefit children and the Environment. So I'll be away from my computer for awhile.

But while I'm away I've got a plan. Since so many clever and industrious Design Mom Readers offered up so many clever and industrious answers to yesterday's Ask-Design-Mom questions, I'm going to try the same thing today. I've posted 4 more questions below. I've answered one of them and I'll add my thoughts to the other 3 later, but in the meantime, I'd appreciate any of your brilliant ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Ask Design Mom: Funky Wallet

Ask-Design-Mom Question:
Hi Gabrielle. A friend of mine introduced me to your site and i am now a Design Mom addict! I just purchased a black Harveys Seatbeltbag (the exec. tote) as a funky diaper bag and am now on the search for the perfect funky wallet to go with it. I was thinking something bright orange or green. Any great ideas?? Thanks for being a genius! — Amy

Design Mom Answer:
Aww. A genius? That's my favorite compliment yet. Great question, Amy. A good wallet can do wonders for helping you feel put together and organized. They're definitely worth a thorough search. (Oh. And nice choice on the Seatbeltbag. My dear friend carries one and she can't say enough good about it. Plus it's so cute!)

I happened to see some wallets by Jill Bliss yesterday at the Stationery Show and I thought they might be perfect for you. She makes them from vintage bed sheets (not reproductions — actual vintage bed sheets), so the fabric is as functional as can be. You just throw it in the wash if it's getting dirty. And because of the nature of the source material, these wallets are inherently limited edition, making them even cooler.

But what I especially liked, is that Jill made about a bazillion proto types, which she used herself, until she found the right balance of features, like the perfect amount of card slots and a zippered portion for coins. Lots of fabric choices on her site.

If wallets-from-sheets have too much of a refurbished vibe for you, take a look at the colors in these beauties by Aster+Sage. They have tons of accessory choices (wallets, organizers, jewelry envelopes, ipod covers, etc.) on their site. I've posted about this company before. I'm a big fan.

And of course, you can't go wrong with something lively from Kate Spade. (I like the color selection at Plaza Too.)

What about you Design Mom Readers? What are your favorite funky wallets?

Ask Design Mom: NYC Don't Miss List

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
[ Just last week I received 2 NYC questions within minutes of each other, so I'm posting them both here. ]

1) Hi Gabrielle. I have a question for you. I am making my second-ever trip to NYC (a Texas gal in the Big Apple - Yee Haw!) in June to visit my best friend. It's a very short one: Friday afternoon, departing Monday morning. On my first trip to NY I was with veteran visitors. The only landmark we hit was Ground Zero. What is your must do? And shopping is also a priority. We hit lots of the popular shopping districts last time. This time I'd like something a little more unique. Thoughts? And then shows. I haven't seen any Broadway shows — recommendations? (I'm not overly sensitive but don't want anything too racy!). Hugs, Natalie

2) Gabrielle. Question: I am visiting NYC this summer with a dear friend. I am "hosting" the trip, as my friend has never visited NYC. Living and having family in NJ for years, I have visited NYC often, yet this trip will be different. I will be staying in the city and will not have children or a group of family in tow. With only 4-5 days to pack as much as possible into every day along with being mindful of a budget (I will end up paying for the bulk of this adventure). I would like advice from you and your savvy NYC area readers on the following:

- Where to stay (considering location and price)
- Where and what to eat, morning, noon, and night and every time in between
- Which Shows to see and any tips on getting tickets
- Transportation Tips
- Shopping Must See and Buy!

I love New York and look forward to any tips you and your readers provide. — Shauna

Design Mom Answer:
Shauna and Natalie, these are wonderful questions. I'm getting excited just thinking about potential itineraries! And I've never been more certain that lots of Design Mom Readers will have informed opinions of NYC. I'll leave you in their capable hands until I can back here. . .

I'm back. And absolutely delighted with all of the readers suggestions. I'll bet you're totally stoked for your trip! Here are a few of my own tips:

For window shopping, my favorite spots are Takashimaya, ABC Home, and the windows at Bergdorfs. (Takashimaya and Bergdorf's are near each other. They're both part of a lovely stretch of 5th Avenue that includes Tiffanys and Saks and Cathedrals and the Plaza and other lovelies. It makes a nice walk. But ABC isn't near them at all.) All 3 are places that appeal to a designer's soul.

For food, I don't need to add to the excellent suggestions that have already been made, but want to reiterate what one reader mentioned: Don't eat at a chain restaurant. You can go to Fridays/Sbarro/McDonalds anywhere. Why waste your precious NYC minutes somewhere un-New-Yorky? If you really must have fast food, grab a pretzel or sausage from a street vendor — you'll feel so authentic.

For entertainment/sightseeing, remember that just being in the city is pretty intense. Lots and lots of movement and sound and people and smells. Sitting on a park bench and taking it all in is pretty great — possibly better than any show you'll pay for.

For transportation, keep in mind that whether you take subways or taxis you'll still do lots of walking. Really. Lots and lots of walking. That's just how it is. And on short trips, even though it's more expensive, I recommend taxis. Because in a taxi, you're above ground and can see more of the city (Hey! There's the Flatiron Building! or Hey! Look at the lions in front of the Public Library!) while you're getting around.

Have a great trip!!

Ask Design Mom: Guest Room

Ask-Design-Mom Question:
Hello Design Mom. Your website was referred to me by a friend. I am so glad I visited. I need help with a guest room. I cannot find a design I like. I am the type of person who needs a picture of a room to inspire me nad give me some direction. The room is pretty small. About 10 x 13. I currently have a queen size bed for friends and family who visit. I would like the room to be for 2 people, plus room for a port-a-crib. I'm including photos of the room in its current condition. It needs some spicing up! Thanks, Rachel

Ask Design Mom: Jogging Strollers

Ask-Design-Mom Question:
Hello. I love your blog! I was wondering if you could help me with baby joggers. I'm trying to figure out which one I want. There are so many and a huge price range. Do I go with a very nice "investment" stroller or just hit Target for whatever they can offer? Any suggestions? Thanks! — Diana

Design Mom Answer:
Thanks for the question, Diana. What gear to get is always something to ponder. But personally, when I think about strollers I get a little crazy, because my family's stroller needs seem to change by the week. I'll tell you more about my jogger stroller thoughts later. . .

Design Mom Readers, what jogger stroller advice do you have for Diana?

Gone Fishing. . .

So I'm supposed to spend the day at the
National Stationery Show.

No really. This time I mean it.

And my friend Sara reminded me of another booth I definitely want to check out: Blonde-Designs, a wonderful company that I featured very early on in this blog's history, and a company that later sponsored one of my first Giveaways. It will be fun to meet the women behind the designs.

But while I'm gone, I've posted 4 more Ask-Design-Mom questions below — and all 4 are waiting patiently to be answered. If you can help me out by offering up some great ideas for these worthy questions, I would really appreciate it. I'll put my two cents in when I have a minute. ..

Have a great day!

Ask Design Mom: Craft Room Paint Color

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Hi Design Mom, I have a design question. I have a large-ish craft room, with unfinished cabinets and white walls that I need to paint. I am having some serious issues with this project. Do I paint the cabinets white and the walls a color? Or do I paint the cabinets a color, and keep the walls white? Help? And do you have any color suggestions, 'cause I could soooo use some help with that too!
I am looking for something "fresh & funky" and I really like the turquoise & robins egg blues, the chocolates, the mustard yellow, the basic white — I guess kind of like my blog colors. — Mandee

Design Mom Answer:
Great question Mandee. I'll defer to my talented Design Mom Readers while I'm at the Stationery Show. . .

Ask Design Mom: Lunch for a 2-year-old

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Hi Design Mom. I'm not a mom, but love your blog. I have a question that doesn't involve cute baby or mom stuff, but I'm thinking you will have some answers anyway, given your five kids. My 20 month old nephew is coming for a visit for a couple of weeks along with his mom and I was wondering about lunch ideas for him. His mom says she's getting tired of feeding him just bread or other carbs. Any ideas? Thanks, Christine

Design Mom Answer:
Fun question, Christine. I just know clever Design Mom Readers will have lots of suggestions on this one!

Ask Design Mom: Graduation Gifts

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
[ I received two graduation related questions — one for males, one for females — that I'll try to answer in the same post. ]

1) Design Mom, My sister (who I'm very close to) is graduating from high school next week. I'm a little late to thinking about it, but I wondered if you had any ideas for not too expensive gifts that would be nice and meaningful as she steps into another phase of her life. I was going to make her something that celebrated our relationship, but time is running out, so I'll have to find something that is meaningful that I can purchase and mail. Thanks! — Laura

2) Hi Design Mom, I guess my question is this: I'm looking for a graduation present for my husband who is graduating from medical school. I think presents for guys are hard in general, but congratulatory presents always seem to stump me. You want them to be something nice that he can remember he got for graduation, but he's not especially sentimental. We're moving soon, so I don't want something I have to work on or put time into creating, I just want to buy something nice that he can keep, not ridiculously expensive, but I'm willing to spend money if it's worth it. Got any ideas? Thanks a ton! — Jen

Design Mom Answer:
Oh! Graduation gifts. So fun! What do you say Design Mom Readers? Any brilliant ideas?

5/24 Edit:
Wow. The comments are in deed full of brilliant ideas. I have only 2 things to add.

1) For my high school graduation I was given a 1/2 gallon of my favorite ice cream (Snelgrove's Canadian Vanilla) and I didn't have to share a single bite with my siblings — which was luxurious. My point? Even a simple gift, if thoughtful, is memorable.

2) I was just introduced to a book called Get A Hobby. It's very well put together and well designed with a basic introduction, history and sources on 101 hobbies. Plus you can take a personality quiz to see which hobbies would be a good fit.

Probably it's a stretch, but there's something about graduating, going to the next phase, being a little unsure of what's coming, that brings to mind possibilities. Like, "I've finished what I committed to. Now. If I could do anything, how would I spend my time?" that seems like the perfect moment to introduce a hobby. Maybe this book, plus the materials to start a new hobby would make a good gift.

Ask Design Mom: Making Computers Look Cool

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Hi Gabrielle, I have a question. How do you make computers look attractive? My husband has two computers that we "have to keep" and they're out in the open (not tucked in an office), so I just wonder how do you make computer stations look neat and clean and cool? Any ideas would be great. Thanks, Sarah

Design Mom Answer:
Work stations can be tricky, Sarah. Thanks for the question. I think part of your answer (neat and clean and cool) is actually in your question. Keeping the area around your computer neat and clean will have a huge impact about how you feel about the space.

As far as cool goes, you have a few options. High-tech hardware seems to look most at home in a very modern or industrial setting. I
f modern furniture appeals to you, take the computers as inspiration and consider making the entire room a Moma-looking-haven. Or maybe just make the computer area a bit more up-to-date with a clean white or silver desk. A fabulous desk chair with contemporary lines. A lamp with a modern shape.

If the computers really bug you, another option is to pretend for a moment that the computers aren't there. Make the space lovely — just the way you want it — and then reintroduce the computers. If you love the rest of the room, the computers probably won't bother you so much.

And if that still doesn't work. Consider an Office in an Armoire like this one from an old issue of Living.

How do you solve this dilemma in your homes, Dear Readers?

Ask Design Mom: Bathroom Lighting

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Gabrielle, I love your blog and read it often. I just have one quick question for you: I have recently been redone my kids' bathroom (they are a 6 year old boy and 1 year old girl). The only thing thing I have left that I am really struggling with is the lighting. Currently it has the boring, plain, vanity light with the 4 exposed bulbs. I want something youthful, fun, maybe even a little color. The only place available for lighting is the spot above the vanity — so I am limited. If you have any insight on good places to shop, let me know. Thanks!! — Mel

Design Mom Answer:

Fun question Mel. Bathroom lighting is on my mind as well, but like I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm having a bit of busy morning and won't be able to give you a great answer until later.

I'm posting this now in the hopes that in my absence, Design Mom Readers will start the ideas flowing. Then I'll be back later today to finish the post. . .

Okay. I'm back.

My deal with bathroom lighting is there needs to be a lot of it. Meaning, no matter how cool the light fixture, if it only allows for one bulb, it's no good. I like a lot of wattage — especially in a kids bathroom, where I tend to clean scraped knees and pull out slivers — these are not activities you want to engage in with dim light.

This "more light in bathrooms is better" theory of mine leads me to be drawn to really well-designed, but fairly traditional light fixtures. Sure some might feel more modern and clean and others feel more vintage or antique, but I still think of them as traditional in that they're probably not making the evening news or winning any lighting awards. (And there is some really gorgeous, award-winning, eye-popping stuff out there. But I might not put it over the sink in my bathroom.)

I like this one and this one from Restoration Hardware for example. To add some color, the second one is especially good, for it comes with textile shades available in a dozen or so subtle fabric choices. Or, I'm sure you could have some made (or make your own) in a brighter material of your choosing.

Also, I fully agree with the readers who have recommended Ikea. If you're looking for color and youth and fun, it's hard to beat Ikea.

Ask Design Mom: Summer School Lunchbox

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Dear Gabrielle, My eldest daughter is about to join the ranks of kindergarteners and I am looking for a cool schoolbox for her to take when her classes begin. The problem I'm having is that she's on a 'year round' school schedule and there aren't too many choices out there from which to pick right now — especially when her first day of school is in mid-July! I can't wait for a traditional September 'back to school' post and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this problem. Any ideas? I want to send her off in style. :) Thanks so much. I LOVE the blog. — Heidi

Design Mom Answer:
Oh man. It was 4 years ago when I was doing my own lunch box shopping for my first kindergartener. And I found it so much more fun than school clothes shopping. It was almost as if when picking out his lunchbox, I was picking out the kind of friends he was going to have that year. (I remember being in fourth grade and totally being BFF with a girl named Kristy, because we had matching pencil boxes. . .)

Anyway. Lunchboxes in the summer can be tricky. But don't despair. First of all, if you can stand to wait until the second week of July (I know that's cutting it close), all the stores will have removed their Independence Day products and moved straight to back-to-school products and you'll probably have tons of choices.

If you must have a lunchbox this minute, I have a couple of suggestions. For old school boxes, you can't beat ebay.

Check out this Lassie box. Rad.

Or this New With Tags Return of the Jedi box.

This one is too grown-up for Kindergarten, but I want it for myself.

A quick note on vintage lunchboxes: if you find one sans thermos, don't stress, just send your child with a little Nalgene bottle/water bottle/juice box/milk money instead.

For more current, insulated, soft-pack lunch boxes, Target has a section dedicated to these year-round in their sporting goods/outdoor gear department.

Like this one.

Or this neoprene one that comes in red, black, green, orange. . .

Target also has a more extensive online lunchbox collection than in stores. I like this orange crush lunch box.

For my son, Ralph, I remember finding a reproduction metal lunchbox featuring vintage BattleStar Gallactica at some discount store, I think it was OddJobs. It totally rocked.

Good luck in your hunt! I'm sure clever Design Mom Readers will chime in with their own ideas and sources.

Ask Design Mom: Redecorating Notebook

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Hi Gabrielle, I love your blog and I have a question for you. I want to create a notebook for all of my redecorating ideas. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Ashley

Design Mom Answer:
Oh. Ashley. I love decorating notebooks! But I find this kind of thing very personal. Not personal as in private, but personal as in what works for one may not work for another. So I'll tell you what I do, but I can offer no guarantees that you'll like my simple system as much as I do.

My favorite thing for this kind of project is a medium size notebook that I can fit in my handbag. It needs to have an elastic closure, so that when I tuck bits and pieces of paper in they don't fall out. In addition, if I'm really working intensely on a decorating/inspiration notebook, I like to keep a small container of paperclips and a roll of double-sided tape in my handbag as well. I like Clipiola clips, because they come in a cute, petite container, that closes securely.

Several companies make notebooks of the size and variety I prefer. In fact, See Jane Work carries a great selection of elastic closure notebooks, but my two current favorites are probably the Bella Journals and Cavallini Notebooks.

Best of luck putting together your decorating notebook. I'm certain Design Mom readers will add some brilliant ideas.

Ask Design Mom: First Father's Day Gift

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Hi Gabrielle, I have a question requiring your great taste and advice. With our first child due this summer, I'd like to get my husband a very special "first" Father's Day gift. Any ideas? Thanks!
— Michelle

Design Mom Answer:
Great question, Michelle. How exciting to be expecting your first. A special Father's Day gift is a really lovely thought. I don't know if your husband is really sentimental, slightly sentimental of completely lacking in sentiment. So I'll just make a variety of suggestions.

1) The book I reviewed a few weeks ago The Dangerous Book for Boys would make a great gift for any father. Whether he is a father of sons or daughters. The book has the effect of helping men remember the best of their childhood and desiring a wonderful childhood for their own offspring. I highly recommend inscribing it of course. An alternative to this would be to give him books that he loved as a child — maybe the Chronicles of Narnia in hardcover. Someday, in the not too distant future, he'll be able to share his favorite stories with this new child.

2) I like this engraved keychain from Little Jules. Beautiful. Not too flashy. Potential to be handed down, but not so expensive that if it gets lost, you cry.

3) An engraved yoyo. A symbol of the fun that will come as the baby ages.

4) This Baby Owners Starter Kit (which I first noticed on Goody Blog) looks delightful. The packaging is great and I think the concept is clever. I have no idea if the contents are any good. . .

5) A really good camera or videocamera. New Dads often find themselves behind the lense as Mom holds/feeds/baths the baby. Plus, lots of men like new toys.

6) If he's confident, a World's Greatest Dad tee is going to get a lot of wear. Not so cool when he actually has some parenting under his belt. But down right charming when he's got a 2 week old newborn.

7) For an outdoorsy Dad, you could purchase a baby accessory that will encourage him to keep up his favorite outdoor activities — but with the new baby in tow. Like a baby trailer that connects to a bike. Or a baby carrier backpack for hiking.

Hopefully those ideas (and the fabulous Design Mom Reader ideas) will get your imagination going. . .

Congratulations! And Good Luck!!

A true girly girl tee, with gathered sleeves and front. 100% cotton, this tee is soft and comfy and in three colors goes with just about anything. Even better. Any time this t-shirt is purchased, One Wish World donates $10 to the Kwawatoto Orphanage in Africa. The tee retails for $

2) Next, check out these Form & Flow Earrings designed by A Work in Progress. These are gorgeous. A high quality Hill Tribe Silver Square sits sturdy while the nugget flows freely. The website describes them as "a metaphor for life; to be sturdy while free flowing creates strength". The earrings sell for $29.

3) Third, you get an Appliquéd Bird Make Up Bag made by Just Be.
Can't get enough bird everything! And check out the link to see the lovely fabric lining. So cute. 8” x 6”, zipper closure. Just right for holding all of life’s little necessities. Retail price: $18

4) Then, catch your breath when you check out this First Blush Apron by Blue Lily. Wash cold and hang dry. 100% cotton. 18" across the waist with a 60" grosgrain ribbon waistband. 25" long. What can I say? Too cute for words. There are additional color options on the website. The aprons sells for $35.

5) Fifth, you get a little something for the kiddies — a Pink Girls Appliquéd Logo Tee. As if that's not enough for you to love this tee, know that One Wish World gives $5 from every one of these t-shirts sold, to Reach the Children. Retail price: $22.

6) We're not through yet — you'll also get a Spring Quote Journal made by Marta Dansie.
I grabbed the description right from the website because it's excellent: These journals are individually handmade with patterned cardstock covers and unique silk ribbon binding. They are quite handy at 8.5" wide x 5.5" tall. Within them you'll find coordinating end papers and smooth white 28 lb. paper. Filled with 80 blank pages, each sheet has an inspirational quote neatly printed, leaving plenty of artistic space for your own original thoughts and sketches. For your niece in college or your own bedside table, you'll find yourself jotting your life down in detail. The journals sell for $18.

7) And finally, (and luckily, and happily), the winner will also receive a Mini Folk Art Print entitled Frida Kahlo by Ann Gardner.
I love this print! It is mini at 5" x 7" and comes printed on un-mounted, unstretched canvas. Perfect for a shelf accent or to add color to a little corner. The prints retail for $12 .

I know. I know. I'm gushing. But there's more. Whether you win this generous prize package or not, One Wish World would like to offer FREE SHIPPING to all Design Mom readers thru June 1st. When you place an order, just send them a quick email letting One Wish World know you saw their company featured on Design Mom, and they'll promptly refund your shipping. I say: spread the word about this giveaway and this great company. Everybody loves free shipping.

One other note, as you browse their site, you'll notice that several items are marked with the cherub symbol. This means that a part or all of the profits from the purchase of that product go to help a certain cause or charity. Why? Well, One Wish World says, "We hope to do good while sharing our gifts and talents. We believe strongly that helping others is good business. Hopefully you will feel good about doing business with a company as dedicated to helping others as we are." I'm impressed.

Thank you One Wish World!

Ask Design Mom: Crib Bedding

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Hi Gabrielle, This question should be an easy one for me to figure out but I'm stuck. When I bought my son's crib bedding, I stayed traditional with a Pottery Barn Kids toile pattern in green. I wanted something neutral for either a girl or a boy. Now, I'm realizing that it's a far cry from my style and not fun enough for my son's personality. I really like a mix of traditional and modern in my home and would love to bring this into the nursery.

We have a Pottery Barn armoire and matching dresser in white, and a custom Ragazzi crib also in white. Since these are pieces I probably won't be changing anytime soon, I'm hoping to allow some new crib bedding to transform the overall feel of the room. I keep returning to the obvious sources, like Dwell, ducduc, etc., but can't seem to find the perfect fit. (And I'm thinking I want a perfect fit when I'm spending $300 plus for the second time.)

Also, do you know of any options to buy just a bumper and quilt? I'm not wanting a bed skirt as it just keeps getting in the way with the drawer under the crib. I would love some help! Thanks,
Kelli

Design Mom Answer:
What a fun question, Kelli! I think you're right. Bringing in some modern, funky crib bedding, and adding it to your traditional furniture is a great way to bring that of-the-moment traditional/modern mix to your nursery. You mention not needing a crib skirt this time around, and might I suggest, that although they are adorable, crib bumbers become pretty much useless as soon as your baby can pull up and use them for a step. So maybe you can forgo the bumper as well?

In addition to saving you some money, it would really open up your choices — because you'll only need a quilt/blanket and a crib sheet.

I love this gender-neutral alphabet blanket and cute stripey sheet from Modern Nursery.

And this womb-with-a-view bedding from Land of Nod.

Or pick up a twin-size duvet cover in a Marimekko print and have a seamstress size it for a crib — use the remaining fabric for throw pillows on a rocking chair.

Design Mom Readers, where would you suggest that Kelli could find modern crib bedding?

Ask Design Mom: Bookmark Storage

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Dear Designmom, I'm a fan of your site (who reading this isn't?) and I'm an aspiring Mom. I'm pretty good at keeping our stuff in line, but this one's got me stumped: My hubby and I are both voracious readers, and thus we accumulate lots of bookmarks; people make them for us, we get them for presents, neat ones show up in books we buy every once in awhile, and we create our own out of scraps of paper. I don't really like that last option, but I've realized that we do that because we can't find any of the cute bookmarks we already have.

It would be nice to have all the bookmarks in one place. Currently, they're all hidden away in boxes; ideally I'd like a box or a container that sits out in the open air and displays our cool-looking bookmarks as well. I can't think of any good solutions that would work. I think of a jar or a cup, but they're round and bookmarks are usually square. Do you have any good-looking ideas? Always,
Kate

Design Mom Answer:
Interesting dilemma Kate. And I think you're right, the solution is all about finding a good-looking container. One you don't mind having out in the open — maybe on a side table next to your favorite reading chair, or on a bookshelf with your favorite novels, or even on the nightstand. Maybe you need several containers in several places.

Personally, this is the kind of thing that I would mentally put on my perpetual shopping list and just keep my eyes open for anything that might work:

-A good-looking low woven basket from the craft store.
-A little decoupaged box in a gift shop.
-
A wirework basket at an antique store.
-A modern mesh container designed for office supplies from Target or the Container Store.
-An old refridgerator-ware butterdish from the Salvation Army.
-A vintage cigar box.
-A beautiful silver bowl.

Because bookmarks come in all shapes and sizes, big and small, I think you're correct to not use a jar or cup — tiny bookmarks would hide at the bottom.

I hope that helps! How do you store and display your bookmarks, Design Mom Readers?

Ask Design Mom: Name Display

Ask-Design-Mom-Question:
Hi Design Mom. What are some cool ways to display our name in our home? We move a great deal and to give my children some continuity I have a few things that I always display in our homes in some way or another. I hope this will give them a sense of “home” no matter where we live. One of those things is our initial. I started collecting R’s (our initial) a few years ago and have them here and there around the house. I am getting a little bored with these however, and I wondered if you had any fabulous ideas of how to display our name. Thanks, Rachel

Design Mom Answer:
What a cool idea Rachel. You're a smart mom! I have two solutions to suggest:

1) A company called Avalisa will produce an abstract pattern based on your name. From their website, "Choose a name and get a design custom made for your person of interest. they can be totally abstract as seen in existing designs, or less abstract so you can find the letters."

I love this. It would be custom art plus your family name all wrapped up in one. And the examples of work from their website are so pretty. As a side note, Avalisa doesn't focus solely on names, they have several excellent collections. Animals. Patterns. Things that go. Check it out.

2) Another solution would be to pick your favorite custom-wall-vinyl company (I've posted about a few of these companies already. Quote the Walls is another one.) and have them produce your family name in the size, color and font of your choice.

I'm imagining something really big and bold, like 5 feet across, off-centered and low on the wall, so that if your couch was against the wall, the bottom of the name would get cropped a bit. I wish I could find a good photo. . . Or maybe something really tiny and subtle on the interior of the front door. The options are endless.

What about you Design Mom Readers? How would you display your family name in your home?

Sesame Letterpress

Have I reported on the Stationery Show yet? No. And I can't. Let me explain: I really wanted to go last Thursday but preparations for Friday's conference ended up filling up the day. So on Friday, I snuck away from the conference with my sister to catch the last few minutes of the show. How shocked was I to get there and find out I HAD THE DATES WRONG!! The Stationery Show didn't start until the next day.

Boy did I feel stupid.

To sum up: I haven't see the show yet but plan to be there sometime this week and promise to report.

In the meantime, if you're looking for a stationery fix, check out these darling baby calling cards created by Sesame Letterpress. Love the silhouette. Love the rounded corners. Love the colors. Lovely.

Sesame Letterpress is a new-to-me company and I can't wait to explore the rest of their website to see what further treasures I discover. You can get more info and see the excellent work of Sesame Letterpress on their site. Plus, lots of pictures at the Sesame Letterpress Flickr page.

Great Gift for a 15-year-old Girl — by Guest Mom Hailey Meyer Liechty

Favorite Spaces — by Guest Mom Hailey Meyer Liechty

I tidied up my generally messy house so you can have a peek. (My friend Nancy the Wonderful has a sign in her neat & tidy studio that says, "This mess is a Place." Amen to that.) If I have a design philosophy it is: make it functional, fun, beautiful and hopefully open and friendly for our family and guests. Easy on the eyes, ears, feet, mind. Here are three of my favorite places in our house.

1| the Pantry. It is a separate closet within the kitchen. Everything is at hand. It is great for cozy cookie making too. The containers are Tupperware Modular Mates. They work beautifully, look great, clean up well. They meet the criteria. I recently added the 4 on the counter.

I also like the new Ball "Collection Elite" canning jars for everyday doo-dads and smaller bulk purchases.
(An aside: while preparing this post I heard a great story about Men loving/selling Tupperware on Marketplace/Public Radio, check it out.)

High tech recipe system.

2| This is our mantle in the family room, which is off the kitchen. At the start of the building process (the foundation had been poured), I realized that the room was crazy small for the many jobs it needed to fulfill. We stopped the process, worked with our architect and added 10 feet. It has turned out to be a smart move. The portrait on the mantle is of Julian (9) by Lee Udall Bennion.

Lee has painted our two older children's portraits, each at age 8. If we have to evacuate, I'm grabbing these paintings first. Well, after the children and Ginger. . .

3| My Studio. My Brain. Gabby remembers a fun cooking class at my house and I remember buying these faux-grain insect specimen drawers from her as she was preparing to move to New York. We had a great conversation and then had to figure out a way to get them out of her house, onto a truck and into a storage unit — waiting to build a room for them! They are fabulous.

Right now I use my studio space for my lovely itty-bitty laptop. I draw some, journal some, sew some (love notes to my darlings), read and eventually hope to get all my children's photos/mementos out of here. I recently purged my studio of all toys that I was "keeping out of reach" from the children they belong to. Now they are kept out of reach someplace else.

My goal is to have my studio clean and available for work all the time.

Drop Off Laundry Service — by Guest Mom Hailey Meyer Liechty

Drop off laundry is one of my favorite "digging out" techniques and a favorite gift to give new mothers, especially of multiples. With all the nuttiness around here the last thing I get to is laundry.

My solution is to take it to the Laundromat one day and pick it up the next. FYI, my laundromat charges $.95/Lb., 10 Lb minimum. In LA I found
a service on line for $1.25/lb and only $.70 in NYC for next day.

The mother of my good high school chum in San Francisco, Samantha (xox), sent her laundry out all the time. I remember thinking that was a good use of money and time. When I lived in NYC I did it often. Now, sadly, I only do it once in a while; wish I could drop-off more often. I love it also because I don't really know how to fold small pants so they stay folded. And then there is the dilemma of tons of sheets, especially the fitted ones. I can't get how to fold fitted sheets either! True. But they come back sweet smelling, folded, smooth and tight. Mmmmm.

Take a look at my before and after shots:

Giveaway Reminder: Organize Magazine

If you haven't already thrown your name/comment into the pool, here's a quick reminder that you have until tonight (Thursday) at midnight P
ST to enter to win one of 10 subscriptions to Organize Magazine! It's a hot new magazine, out next month. Don't miss out. Just leave a comment over on that post.

I'll be mostly away from the computer for the day. My plan is to spend some time at the National Stationery Show first. I'm especially excited to see Nantaka Joy, the new line that the talented author of Oh Joy is launching.

Afterwards, I'll help with preparations for the Politicopia booth at the Personal Democracy Forum tomorrow (read: pick up banners and handouts, pack up the tables and chairs, and wheatgrass. . .).

It's going to be a good day!

Design Blog Party

I'm trying to scheme a way that I can get to this party tomorrow night, but it will be a full-on miracle if I can squeeze it in. Is anyone else planning to attend?

I've never been to a blogging/design party before, but I'm imagining lots of people in black, sitting on barcelona chairs and talking about wordpress vs. blogger, challenges of keeping a blogroll and Target.

Which sounds lovely to me.

The smart blogs listed at the bottom of the notice are sponsoring it. I first saw it on Moco Loco. You can RSVP for this event at icff@theapt.com

AG Bell Walk — by Guest Mom Hailey Meyer Liechty

On Monday, when I read the post about Gabrielle's friend Laura and the Cystic Fibrosis Walk, I thought, "It sounds like a great weekend to get out and support something!! Because there is another walk happening this Saturday that's dear to my own heart.

It's called the AG Bell Walk, and it is all about childhood hearing loss. I love the tagline: Hear from the Start. Talk for a Lifetime. (Isn't that nice?) The event takes place all around the country. I lifted some text from the AG Bell Walk website because it was succient and I feel it is 100% important:

Hearing loss is the most common birth defect, yet most families are not familiar with it — or what the options for addressing it are. Yet, early diagnosis is critical so that children with hearing loss can benefit from advances in hearing technology and education. In fact, most children with hearing loss can learn to listen and talk nearly as well as their hearing peers.

On May 19, AG Bell chapters across the United States are hosting a Talk.Walk.Run., as well as a variety of other events, to raise awareness of the risks of childhood hearing loss and the options for addressing it, including spoken language. Join friends, family and colleagues and help give every baby with hearing loss a sound start in life.

It will be held in the following cities:
* Ann Arbor, Michigan
* Atlanta, Georgia
* Denver, Colorado
* Edmond, Oklahoma
* Indianapolis, Indiana
* Provo, Utah

My family will be participating and I am so happy to be involved.
_______________

Note from Design Mom:
Speaking of Walks, there are only a couple more days to get your support pledges to Laura for the Cystic Fibrosis Walk. I'm with Hailey: it's a great weekend to support a good cause!! And thank you to everyone who has donated so far.

The DMV, Deafness & My Children — by Guest Mom Hailey Liechty

The picture of me in the sidebar is my actual DMV photo. Before being the Guest Mom I thought, what picture should I use? I'd like my portrait taken for the Design Mom spot ... but I want to look good, like my DMV photo...(chuckle chuckle) No one in the world would believe that, but it's true! My favorite denim jacket. Favorite scarf. Slightly funky, slightly sparkly.

I've decided to use that photo because it helps illustrate a story that goes with it. I went to the DMV dreading the ordeal. The photos. The test. The waiting. None of that happened. I didn't need the test, the lines were reasonable and the woman who took the photo was very nice, cracked a joke or two, smiled and commented on my first photo. She showed it to me and then asked if I wanted to take it again. She loved my scarf. My mom gave it to me. I love all the colors and (!) it sparkles too!

She took my picture 3 times and let me choose the best. I like the picture. I really like pulling out my ID.

She asked me questions on the Drivers License application. Address correct? Yes. Age? Yes. Donor? Yes. Is it correct that you want to donate $2.00 to the blind? Yes.

At this point I became a bit more friendly, taking her cue, and said, "I wonder why they don't have a donation spot for the deaf? Why the blind and not the deaf?" I wondered out loud.

Her response was, "Yeah, I don't know. Especially since it is much, much, much, much, much, much, much worse to be deaf than blind."

I paused, then said, "Well, I think it is only much worse. You can keep a few of the much-es."

She went on to explain the social barriers of deafness. She was kind. Finially I said something like, "Two of my children are deaf (the two lovely faces pictured at the top of this post) and it can be a drag, a big repetitive drag, but it is not the worst thing and I don't think it is worse than being blind. My children can do anything — play, read, use the computer, run, draw, cook. With fantastic modern technology they can listen and with therapy speak very very well, and eventually drive."

She gave this friendly apology/explanation for what she had said, and for me having 2 deaf children. She then asked a few more DMV questions, collected my money and I went on my way.

This story perhaps is unusual because it is about a kind and generous DMV worker, but it is so typical of my daily experiences.

I meet many friendly people, others who stare, or let their children stare, at my children until I explain to them they my children are deaf and have COCHLEAR IMPLANTS. The cochlear implant helps them hear. Other people, not professional speech therapists, act as though they know more than I do; as in a relative telling me my son has "bunched Rs," he doesn't. Many people like to share their opinion about deafness and how beautiful sign language is. Why don't we sign more? I explain that a child can really only learn to talk in the first 6 years of life, the earlier the better. After that spoken language will always be like speaking a foreign language. My children will probably learn sign language at some point and that is fine with us.

People like to share assumptions about a deaf person's abilities, comparisons to other disabilities and stories of family members. I hear dire stories of unethical audiologists selling over priced hearing aids and self-interested insurance companies denying coverage to children, and adults, for anything related to deafness. (We personally have dealt with medical insurance issues a lot.)

Whether it is deafness, cochlear implants, how cochlear implants work, why and how my children need them, genetics and our family history, or schools my children attend (Nathan, age 6, is the top of his mainstream class), it can be tiresome. I really don't mind. I have to explain everything to everyone, all the time.

My favorite, and perhaps the most surprising thing, I need to explain to people is why we want to give our deaf children the gift of spoken language and why, when at home and out and about, I must repeat myself over and over, again and again, with speech and sign. This is not redundant. It is educational, to help my children (hearing or not) perceive the subtle nuances of sound so they can learn to express themselves beautifully and at the same time educate everyone who asks, or looks at them askew.

Giveaway: Organize Magazine

I'm craving a middle of the week pick-me-up. How about a Giveaway? Get your comments in right away for your chance to win ONE of 10 SUBSCRIPTIONS TO ORGANIZE MAGAZINE!!

10 winners! That certainly improves your odds. And what a cool prize. Organize is new on the scene — the premiere issue comes out next month — and I have to say, the timing couldn't be better. I am so craving a new read. The topic of this one especially interests me. I heart organization. In addition to implementing the ideas, I can imagine sitting in the middle of my house at its craziest (which is pretty darn crazy) and flipping through this magazine just to rest my eyes on it's peaceful photos.

Plus, isn't it fun to be in the know? It'll be a treat for you to sprinkle your conversations with mentions of this magazine before it hits the newstands. Product gossip is the best kind of gossip.

You can see a preview of the current issue here. (Try "pulling" the corners to turn the page — neat!) And based on the preview, I'm really impressed. The layout is clean and lovely and so is the imagery. Take a look:

Don't you feel more organized just seeing those images? The website looks like it will be useful as well, with a "Neat Things" section and a "Your Ideas" section. If you don't win, you can subscribe here. Like I said before, the premiere issue comes out next month. I can't wait to get my hands on one.

Thank you Organize Magazine!

Keeping My Hands Busy — by Guest Mom Hailey Meyer Liechty

Sally Mavor is one of my favorite artists. She has created many lovely books with felt, needle and thread. Using her book Wee Folk I created an Owl needle book that I sold last weekend at a Bazaar. I had a lot fun making it.

I often have 10-20 minutes waiting for someone; it is nice to have a small portable sewing/crochet project to work on. I used to read but I got so annoyed(!) when I had to stop in the middle of a chapter or article. Felt is especially forgiving for portable projects.

I have loved felt, wool felt, since I was very little. Is it the powerful memories of flannel boards? My Grandmother's coats? I don't know. But it is the equivalent of sewing with whipped cream — soft and gentle on my fingers. And there is a bonus: the natural wool is great for your needles!

Next projects:
after I make a few funky-fabric-combination tote bags, I'm planning on making one of these crayon caddies. Wouldn't this be great for a car trip? I would substitute non-melting colored pencils for crayons. You can find directions for the crayon caddy at Skip To My Lou.

What to Pack for BlogHer

I'm going to BlogHer in July and I'm way excited. I was able to attend one event at the BlogHer Business conference last March and loved it. I'm thinking a whole conference will blow me away. Cool people. Good ideas. And speaking of good ideas, here's your chance to get in on the action. Design Mom is welcoming sponsors for her BlogHer Conference Trip. Sponsorships are available in the following areas:

1) Airfare
A direct flight from either JFK or LaGuardia to Chicago please. Do you have a parent on the board of directors for Jet Blue? Delta? American Airlines? Other? Hook me up. I'll make [Your Airline Here] the official airline of Design Mom. Or maybe you're a smaller (cash poor) company but you have a stock of transferable frequent flyer miles? You know how I love to support small businesses. . .

2) Hotel
BlogHer has booked blocks of rooms at two fine Chicago Hotels. Chicago City Centre and W Lakeshore. While either will be lovely, I don't think I'm going to shock anyone if I say I'm more of a W kind of girl. Anyone out there have a connection with Starwood Hotels? I'll need a room on Thursday, July 26th, Friday, July 27th and Saturday, July 28th.

3) Meals
I have no idea what to expect for meals. Will I be eating at the conference? Will I be going out? Room Service? Who can tell? I assume this will need to be a cash stipend. Ask my kids: everybody suffers if Design Mom is hungry.

4) Wardrobe
I'm thinking mostly dresses. Although a good pair of jeans is imperative as well. And something to wear with the jeans. Plus luxe pjs — goes without saying. Think you have the goods to dress Design Mom? Let me know. (Do you do dresses but not jeans? I'll be happy to accept several sponsors in this area.)

5) Accessories/Jewelry
Earrings. Bracelets. Necklaces. Cocktail rings. Belts. I don't know exactly what I'll need yet. But I know it needs to be fabulous. You know everyone will be asking me where I got that gorgeous bracelet/necklace/ring — will I tell them about your company? Send me an email if you'd like to be a sponsor.

6) Shoes
Really, it will depend on how the wardrobe develops. But I'm guessing at least 3 pairs will be involved. Maybe 5. Do you own a shoe store? Or. Does your company have nothing to do with shoes, but you'd like to sign on as the shoe sponsor? Let's talk.

7) Handbags
It's true about ladies and handbags — you just can't have enough. It's an addiction. I'm going to need something really smart to carry during the day. Something with room for my laptop, cell phone and a cute little notebook. Plus lip gloss. Then, I need a hip little something to carry to dinner.

8) Luggage
Design Mom has to represent. I can't show up at the hotel with tattered, mismatched luggage. But it's really only a 3-day trip and I don't need anything montrous or hardcore. I have my eye on this Orla Kiely roller case (and there's a matching shoulder bag, duffel and handbag as well). But I would consider any high quality, of-the-moment luggage set you'd like to sponsor. In fact, almost anything from Flight 001 would be perfect. 2 pieces should be plenty — a mid-size rolling case and a largish shoulder bag.

9) Cell Phone
I've got a cell phone, of course. But it's time for an upgrade. I'm pretty clueless about phones. What do I need? A Razr? Do they come in red? And note — it's got to work with my Verizon contract. Want me to try another phone company that's got particularly good coverage in Chicago? I'll also consider a prepaid phone contract on a chic phone with enough minutes to get me through the conference. (Read: enough minutes to call home every 1/2 hour to check in on the family.)

10) Laptop
Although I'm on a destop computer at home, while at the conference I'll need to be able to blog on the go. And in style of course. A Mac Book or Mac Book Pro should do the trick nicely. Are you a tech company trying to reach women? Consider a sponsorship.

11) BlogHer registration
There's no point in going to BlogHer if I'm not registered! BlogHer has made a point of keeping registration costs low so that more women can attend. It's not unusual for a business conference of this caliber to cost $1000 or more, but BlogHer registration is only $205.93.

If you, or your blog, or your company is interested in being a sponsor (read: interested in helping Design Mom keep it real) or you know someone who might be, please send me a quick email letting me know which category(s) you're interested in supporting, and I'll give you all the sponsorship info: What you'll get. What you'll give. How cool you are.

Think I'm joking? Does Design Mom ever joke when handbags are involved? I'm absolutely, positively welcoming sponsors for this trip. Design Mom Sponsors are so the new black.

5/17 UPDATE:
So exciting!! It looks like I've got 2 categories sponsored. Only 9 more to go. I'll post with more details in a few days.

Bizarro — by Guest Mom Hailey Meyer Liechty

Although a news junky, I subscribe to the paper just for the funnies. Comics are great to help children read and to develop a sense of humor (which seems very rare these days). Plus, they are good for conversation starters and great art!

My favorite? Bizarro. I contacted the artist, Dan Pirraro, and he gave me permission to use this one while I'm a Guest Mom here. I think it is perfect for the Design Mom blog.

Ask Design Mom: Dinnerware for Kids

Ask-Design-Mom Question:
I'm new to your site, so I'm not sure if you've covered this topic before, but I wondered if you've found any nice dinnerware for kids — not too cutesy, definitely not gender-specific. I found one shallow but largish bowl in an op shop which has funky jungle animals accosting each other signed by K. Motonobu but can't find anything to match it or even to rival its affections at our dinnertable!
Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Lauren (in Queensland, Australia)

Design Mom Answer:
Hi Lauren! Great question. I am also on a perpetual quest for good children's dinnerware. There are dozens of lovely choices in melamine these days, but I do have issues with melamine's non-microwave-ability. So I was delighted to see these rubber options.

Virtually unbreakable. A plate, a bowl and a cup in lots of mix-and-match bright choices (greens and blues too). And completely fine in a microwave.

If you don't share my melamine issue, Giggle also has several other cute options. I especially like the Groovy Dots Dishware and the Snack Sets (pictured at top).

What about you Design Mom Readers? What have you seen lately in great-looking dishware for kids?

I first spotted the rubber dishware on Tangled and True.

Edible Glitter — By Guest Mom Hailey Meyer Liechty

My friend Laura sent me a wonderful package, out of the glittery blue sky. This edible glitter is lovely to look at and is basically flavorless.
It is made out of gum arabic. Lovely, lovely.

Just sprinkled some pink over real whipped cream for Stella's chocolate birthday cake for a final touché. You can find them

Hostess with the Mostess Stationery Week

The Hostess with the Mostess has a special week going on at her blog. And I am especially in love. She's spending the whole week showcasing stationery(!) — everything from wedding invitations to everyday cards. I'm grinning just thinking about it.

Yesterday she featured several companies — all new to me — and all producing really beautiful work (like Avie Designs, who made the hot cards below). I can't wait to see what she posts today. Plus, as icing on the cake, she's hosting a couple of stationery giveaways as well.

The whole week is in honor of the New York Stationery Show, happening this week. Can you see why I'm so happy? The Stationery Show is like a second Christmas for me. Pretty overload x 10. Confession: I think I even prefer it to the Gift Show. I've got family coming to town. A big conference on Friday. Hosting book club tonight. So I'm not even sure which day I can go. But I'm bound and determined to get there.

And for your own pretty overload, I highly recommend you pay a visit to the Hostess right away.

Start Your Week off Right

It's Monday morning. If you're like me, a good Monday morning can determine the outlook of my whole week. If I start the day with a clean kitchen, if I am patient with my kids, and if I do something kind for someone else, I'm in good shape. Today's "something kind for someone else" is extra good because it involves one of my favorite families and a cause that's dear to their hearts. And I want to invite you to "do something kind" as well.

My friend Laura, blogger extraordinaire, participates each year in the Great Strides Walk for Cystic Fibrosis. Her son Conner (the lovely figure in the orange cap above) was born with Cystic Fibrosis, but because he only has a mild form, Laura feels especially responsible for supporting other families dealing with CF — many families experience Cystic Fibrosis in a major way and don't have the time or energy to do fundraising for research. There's an excellent post about why Laura Walks here.

Laura writes: "We are very fortunate that the type of CF that Connor has (based on the combination of the two mutations) will, in all likelihood, allow him to live a full and virtually symptom-free life. Connor is followed by a pulmonologist at Columbia four times a year and we do physical therapy on his chest everyday as preventative measures.

Since Connor's diagnosis we have learned more about this life-threatening disease (today, the median age of survival for a person with CF is just over 33 years). So, even though Connor's future will most likely be healthy and bright, there are many children whose lives depend on the research and drug development that is funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Because relatively few people in the United States have this disease, not as much attention or money is given to research and drug development."

The Walk is this Sunday, May 20th. Laura's goal is to raise $1500 by the end of this week. She's already 40% there but she needs more help! And I can't imagine a more helpful group of people than Design Mom Readers. Any amount you can donate is wonderful, but might I suggest $10? Not enough to break a budget, but it will add up fast for CF research. Go here to donate to Cystic Fibrosis Research by joining Laura's Walk Team.

Bonus: to thank you for your contribution, Laura had a great idea. Because she is a talented scrapbooker and stationery maker, (sometimes she shares her scrapbook layouts on her blog, see some of my favorites here, here, here and here,) she has designed and made a really yummy set of cards — the very ones pictured here. Anyone who donates to her CF team this year is automatically entered to win the cards! You can read more about the stationery drawing here.

Start your week out on the right note by getting involved in this very worthy cause. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful donations. $5. $10. $100. It all adds up. Remember, the Cystic Fibrosis Walk is this Sunday, May 20th, so you only have a few days to get your donation in!

Please visit the CFF site to learn more about CF.

Year of the Calendar — by Guest Mom Hailey Liechty

This school year has been berserk. We have had 6 different school schedules for 5 children. (Our one son goes to 2 kindergartens, to help him with speech/language.) Many times I have missed important things because I didn't write something on the calendar or didn't check it. Then I realized: It has to be the year of the calendar!

For years I've wanted a simple, oversize (but not massive) calendar. That shouldn't have been too hard to find. Silly kittens, icky flowers, great rock gardens of the world were not necessary. I also wanted to find one printed on uncoated paper, so I could write and erase! The calendar becomes a family journal. The squares are large enough for small daily drawings.
Since I couldn't find it anywhere I had to make it and have it printed.

My friend Hiedi helped with the design and many suggestions. It is bland and fun to decorate. I have the children fill out their dates and they are so proud when their month is up. We have three months hanging on a metal door. I also keep a secondary calendar close by to help plan far down the year.

Welcome Hailey Meyer Liechty!!

I'm so excited to have Hailey Meyer Liechty as a Guest Mom this week! I met Hailey through her husband Christopher, a designer and all-around good person that I worked with on occasion before I moved to New York. And I'm so happy he introduced us, because Hailey is just the kind of artsy, creative, interesting, in-the-middle-of-everything kind of woman I love to have in my life. And as you might expect, she's busy. So I had to beg her and beg her to be a Guest Mom. But she finally relented, started her own blog, and is here with us this week — hooray!

One story I have to tell you about Hailey: she is constantly learning new and wonderful things — and always from the best sources she can find. On one night, years ago, she contacted the pastry chef at Sundance (as in Robert Redford's resort that hosts his film festival with the same name) and asked her to teach a class in Hailey's home. The pastry chef agreed and Hailey invited the women in her life to the class with everyone contributing to pay the Chef for her time. I loved it and was so glad I knew someone like Hailey who would think to organize such a thing. I know you'll love Hailey as well, and you can keep up with her at her fine blog The Letter of the Day.

As you know if you've been reading for awhile, I ask Guest Moms to write up a little something about themselves. Here's Hailey's bit.

-Inventory: 1 lover/husband/penguin-style design dad, 5 children, 6 Llamas, 4 ducks, 4 bunnies, 1 beloved tan & white Beagle.
2 youngest children (6 & 3) are deaf. Both have cochlear implants.
-Title on calling card: "Mother" in Engraver's Gothic, small caps.
-Christopher says, "Watch out!" due to some advocacy work I've done for deaf children.

-Love to listen to loud funky (cow-bells, early jazz, funk, cow-punk) music!
-Been known to dance with children & friends outside of parked cars...

-Love the alphabet (calligraphy & fonts), felt, embroidery, beautiful fabric, clay, drawing and ... GLITTER.
-No longer enjoy cooking, although some think I do.
-Hate cleaning the kitchen — cleaning anything.
-Love clean places/things.

-Crazy about spinning classes.

-Favorite Appliance: The Fellows Paper Shredder.
-Favorite Places: San Francisco (my hometown, sniffle sniffle); Union Square, NYC; Sundance, Utah; my home.

New Camera

Look what my awesome brother Jared just sent me:

A Canon Elph! I'm so excited. I have been indesperate need for a new camera for ages. Jared asked me what kind I wanted, and since he's the photographer in the family, I asked him to please pick one out for me — although I did mention that something really tiny (so that I could put it in my handbag) would be great.

The camera has arrived and it's so pretty. Tiny, just as I requested. But also shiny with lots of buttons. Mmmm. I can't wait to start using it. New toys are so fun. Thank you, Jared!

[ What? You don't have a brother that sends you cameras? Time to rethink your family members. . . ]

Fatboys on Sale

Last summer I posted about Fatboys — these hip new bean-bag type chairs that I saw at the New York Gift Show. I love the colors and the up-to-date shape.

So when long-time Design Mom Reader Sara saw them on sale for $80, she knew I would love a head's up to share with my readers and she sent me a quick email.

Thanks for sharing Sara!

Mother's Day Giveaway #7: Pronk Blouse

You may have already seen today's first premium giveaway — if not, check out the Portrait Necklace here. And then, spend some time with our second premium giveaway of the day. Worthy of all the same adjectives: beautiful, luxurious, high-end. Here's your chance to win A BLOUSE OF YOUR CHOICE from the NEW COLLECTION at PRONK!!

That's right. The winner gets to pick her favorite Pronk blouse, with only one exception: you can't pick this blouse, because it's still in production. Other than that, you've got some weighty decisions to make. What will it be — Dainty Ruff? School-Girl Glam? Just Right? And once you've picked the style, what about pattern? If only all decisions were this fun to make.

The designer behind Pronk, Susannah Furr, has really put together a collection that women will find widely appealing. Flirty skirts. Blouses that will add a bit of color to the average black/grey/navy wardrobe. Dresses that make me catch my breath. Lots of feminine details. Plus, I like the whole thinking behind Pronk. Get some insight into this great line here.

The collection really is incredible. I want to be sure to draw your attention to these especially lovely pieces:

Merry Meringue Dress.

Blueberries for Sal in Hawaii Blouse.

Scandinavian Summer Skirt. (Check out the constrasting peek-a-book panel. So cute!)

Giddy Paisley Dress.

I should note, while these are no Target prices, Pronk pieces are also so much more amazing than anything you'll find in a chain store. Fresh prints. Fresh styles. Totally original. And delightfully and reasonably priced when you compare Pronk to other hi-end indie lines like Lucy Sykes or Anne Fontaine. Not every budget will allow for a wardrobe full of Pronk pieces, but here's your chance to add something really special to your closet.

Thank you Pronk!

Mother's Day Giveaway #6: Fine Art of the Family Necklace

Two really beautiful Giveaways today. Maybe elegant is the better word. Maybe elegant and luxurious. Or maybe I should just say high-end. Curious? Here's the scoop: don't miss your chance to win a stunning IMAGE CASE NECKLACE from THE FINE ART OF FAMILY!!

What did I tell you? Beautiful. Luxurious. High-End. And extra bonus: the Image Case Necklace comes in a large or small size and the winner gets to choose which one they prefer! The jewelry collection at The Fine Art of Family is designed by Monica Rich Kosann, a museum and gallery-exhibited fine art photographer who specializes in black and white portraiture of children and families. Inspired by her visits to flea markets and antique shops where she collected vintage lockets and other precious pieces, Monica created her own collection of jewelry and picture frames.

These are not pieces to pick up casually. These are pieces to purchase with the next 10 generations in mind. Pieces that will be kept in the family. Pieces to be cherished. This is the kind of jewelry that makes a grand gesture as a gift — especially a gift marking an important event — a graduation, an anniversary.

The Fine Art of Family has a beautiful collection of jewelry, gifts and accessories. Allow me to point out a few of my favorites:

Three Coins Bracelet.

Image Case Key Ring.

Silver Rectangle Gate Locket.

Small Triple-Image Case.

Aren't those gorgeous? Luxe pieces all. I especially love the necklaces because I think it's just lovely to have a picture of someone/something dear hanging near your heart. Maybe a picture of your dear grandmother, dear husband or dear childhood home. Good luck. Happy commenting.

Thank you The Fine Art of Family!

Book of the Week: Runaway Bunny

This is the perfect book to showcase the week leading up to Mother's Day. Made in the same era and by the same brilliant team that came up with Goodnight Moon, it's the story of a little bunny with an independent streak whose ready to test the bounds of his mother's love.

If you run away, said his mother, I will run after you. For you are my little bunny.

The little bunny is comfortable imagining pretty much any future, knowing his Mother will be there to love and support him. A sweet and gentle story and very comforting to the toddler set.

I know there's a 90% chance you already have it in your collection, but if not, it's worth adding.

Mother's Day Giveaway #5: Workout Gear from Ryka

Okay Ladies, we've pampered ourselves with luxe linens, beautiful dresses, and gorgeous jewelry. But today we're really going to take care of ourselves. No really. We're going to get healthy. And our sponsor today is going to help. Enter your comment to win ANY PAIR OF SHOES, ANY WORKOUT TOP & ANY WORKOUT BOTTOM from RYKA SPORTSWEAR!!

I'm not kidding. Winner's choice: ANY shoe. ANY bottom. ANY top. So cool. And I realize I'm a dork, but not having anything to wear is one of my best excuses for not excercising. Now Ryka is going a long way to put that excuse to bed. What do you like to do, Yoga? Running? Triathlons? Spinning? Ryka has the right gear to keep you comfortable and moving — and not rearranging/readjusting yourself. I love the tagline on their packaging: Something wonderful happens when women design activewear for women: it fits. And it does.

So get your thinking caps on. What shoe are you going to pick? Take your time deciding because they offer dozens(!) choices. Here are two of my favorites:

Versa MaryJane.

Tri-Trainer.

But you're not done thinking yet. What about a top? Check out these lovelies:

Spin Mesh Top.

Empire Cami.

And of course, to complete the ensemble, you'll need to pick one more item. May I recommend:

Fitness Skirt.

Essential Crop Pant.

You know you need this Giveaway. If you already workout a ton, your gear is likely looking shabby and is ready for some renewal. And if you don't workout at all, there's nothing like cute clothes to get you moving. Paying attention to your health by getting out there and excercising is the absolute best way to celebrate Mother's Day. Here's to healthy women!

Thank you Ryka!

NOTE: Want to double your chances at winning this gear? I noticed Mod*Mom is offering up the same prize package! Check it out here.

Baby Betty is One Today!

Amazing. Betty Blair was born a year ago today. I can't imagine an easier baby. She has been nothing but a delight.
These pictures are of Betty feeding herself Cheerios this morning (and trying to share with Daddy, the camera man).

When you're celebrating your first baby's first birthday the party is fantastic. A big bash where baby is the star, eating cake and generally charming everyone, and the guests are all adults. And you can put in as much time and energy into the celebration as you'd like
.

When you're celebrating your fifth baby's first birthday, you almost forget to do anything at all until your older kids remind you. Not that Betty is aware of it yet, but being a fifth baby is not always a picnic.

So Ben and I and the kids want to do something extra-fun for Betty's birthday. We're thinking maybe a party based on being the fifth. Held at our home: 5 Winslow Circle. Where we can celebrate all the good things associated with the number 5.
Of course, it won't happen today: cub scouts and a daddy-daughter kickball game are already on the schedule. But it will happen soon.

And for today, these photos and a sweet little birthday cake to share with her brothers and sisters, will be just right.

Happy Birthday Betty Blair!

Mother's Day Giveaway #4: Earrings-of-the-Month from My Sunset Road Jewelry

So we've got some amazing necklaces featured in today's first Giveaway — please go enter if you haven't already — and our second Giveaway today is just as fun and equally yummy. Leave your comment for a chance to win a 6-MONTH MEMBERSHIP to MY SUNSET ROAD'S EARRINGS-OF-THE-MONTH-CLUB!!

Earrings-of-the-Month-Club? Exactly. And in reality, it's as good as it sounds. Each month for six months, the winner will receive a new pair of earrings just to their liking. This is how it goes down: when a lucky someone signs up for My Sunset Road's Earrings-of-the-Month-Club, they fill out a little form indicating their jewelry preferences: long, short, beaded, pearl, wood, etc. And Courtney, the jewelry artist, whips the client up the perfect pair and sends them along every month.

Can you imagine how delightful it must be to receive a package like that every few weeks? Wondering what the earrings will look like as you dig into the packaging. Trying them on to see how pretty they look with your new jeans. Lovely.
You can get an idea of the earrings you might receive here.

My Sunset Road has an incredible collection of jewelry. I posted earlier about some of my favorite pieces, and I'll showcase a few more favorites here:

Orbit Bracelet.

Careen Necklace.

Saturn's Moon Ring.

Bamboo & Sterling Earrings.

The idea of a something-of-the-month-club is so appealing to me. Flowers would be good. Fruit as well. But earrings — that would be amazing! And not just any earrings. I couldn't be more impressed with the beautiful handiwork at My Sunset Road. These are gorgeous pieces. Have fun browsing. And good luck (my fingers are crossed for you).

Thank you My Sunset Road!

Mother's Day Giveaway #3: Two Necklaces from Armelle Jewelry

Well. I wanted to start out Monday's Giveaways with a bang. (Mission accomplished, I think.) But frankly, I think that today's giveaways (both featuring gorgeous jewelry) are just as yummy.
Take a minute now to check out the first one (be still my heart): TWO STUNNING NECKLACES FROM ARMELLE JEWELRY!!

Close your eyes for a second and picture the Citrine Drop Necklace and Blue Agate Necklace showing of your lovely neckline. So pretty. Armelle Jewelry is a handmade line of feminine, delicate and modern pieces of the highest quality. First score for handmade. Second score for an artist who summered in Paris growing up and takes much of her inspiration from that stylish place. I am so loving these pieces! Good with something casual. Good with something dressy.

And it's not just necklaces. Armelle Jewelry's selection of earrings and bracelets is just as drool-worthy. Here are some of the pieces I'm coveting at Armelle:

Unakite Hoop Earrings.

Joey Necklace.

Cherry Quartz Gliders.

When's the last time you added a really stunning necklace to your collection? How about two necklaces?

Good jewelry can spice up even the most basic ensemble. Add a pretty necklace and some good heels and voilá, jeans plus t-shirt is elevated to high fashion. Another reason to love accessories: no matter what you ate last night, jewelry always fits. Don't miss your chance to own these gorgeous and unique pieces. Yummy. Happy commenting!

Thank you Armelle Jewelry!

Blirt Shirt

The other day I got an email from Blirt introducing me to their fun and funny graphic tees for children. So great. Check it:

Fish out of Water

A Good Egg

And just right for our Oscar: A Bull in a China Shop

You can find lots more playful tees here. Plus the packaging is delightful. Twined and bundled and bagged and stickered as if to especially delight a designer like myself. And each tee comes with a little booklet giving a brief and entertaining history of the phrase pictured. I can't imagine a more charming way to introduce your kids to the playfulness of the English language.

Plus, as with all
great tees these days, the shirts are made from 100% organic cotton with low impact dyes. Why is organic cotton such a must? Read Blirt's excellent explanation here.

Nice work, Blirt.

Beehive Bazaar

I am just itching to go to the Beehive Bazaar this weekend. Two women I adore, Stephanie Higginbotham and Hailey Liechty (our next Guest Mom), are two of the wonder women behind this event. And from what I know of Steph and Hailey, it's guaranteed to be a fun-time had by all. (Plus, I put a lot of stock in event posters, and this one rocks.)

Of course, I'm in New York and will be missing it. So I beg you: if you're anywhere in the vicinity of the lovely Bazaar this weekend, please pay a visit and then send me an email with some juicy details so that I can live vicariously through you. Three cheers for Indie Artists!

Have you already entered today's first giveaway for the Custom Bed & Bath package? To find it, just scroll down. Ready for sure-to-covet Giveaway number two? Here goes: Make a comment on this post by midnight tonight (Monday) and you'll be entered to win TWO DRESSES and TWO ACCESSORIES of
your choice from SHABBY APPLE!!

You've may have already seen my post about Shabby Apple and if you have, you know I'm a fan. Classic dresses. Great designs. Realistic hemlines. Like I said, I'm a fan.

Dresses are the best. Just think how much fun you'll have picking out your favorite two. One for you, one for a friend? Umm. No. Now's not the time to share — these are some cute dresses — keep them for yourself. Besides, they're so reasonably priced, your friend can pick up her own.

And don't forget the hot accessories. Here are some of my favorite items at Shabby Apple:

Summer in Nice dress.

Stone Henge bracelet.

Sweet Pea dress.

Lipstick belt.

Just think what a boost 2 new dresses will give to your wardrobe. Not to mention 2 new accessories. There's just something about slipping into a dress that instantly brightens your mood. Makes you feel confident for that job interview. Or feel like meeting friends for lunch. Or even makes the grocery shopping a little more glamorous. Three cheers for dresses.

Thank you Shabby Apple!

Mother's Day Giveaway #1: Bed & Bath Package from Monarch Monograms

Happy Monday to you! Let's get started on these amazing Mother's Day Giveaways. Remember, these are prizes just for the Ladies. No toys. No baby items. Each prize is in the $150+ range. And you only have 1 day to enter. There are 2 Giveaways today. Both are excellent. Here's the first:

Make a comment on this post by midnight tonight and you'll be entered to win a BED & BATH CUSTOM DESIGN PACKAGE FROM MONARCH MONOGRAMS. What? That's right, a completely customized design embroidered on a pair of DAMASK HAND TOWELS and DAMASK STRIPE PILLOWCASES.

Here's how it will work: the winner will communicate directly with Monarch Monograms to determine their design style. Monarch Monograms will create 3 custom designs which the winner will pick from. Then Monarch will sew the design of choice on a pair of hand towels and a pair of organic cotton pillowcases. Oh man. I love this kind of thing. Someone determining my design style? Lovely.

I'm heartily impressed with Monarch's work. Take a look at some of their offerings:

Your dinner party will feel more complete with these initialed linen dinner napkins.

You'll love to see this super-soft throw blanket sitting near your best reading chair.

Look how happy these Seeing Spots Burp Cloths are? And this Organic Cotton Receiving Blanket?

And dig this monogram Monarch whipped up for me over the weekend. (It was concluded that I was a san-serif sort of person. Um. Exactly.)

It's so satisfying when you get your house at a point that you can concentrate on details like monogrammed linens. They bring instant luxe to guest space or master bedroom. And are the kind of things your kids will fight to inherit. Take note, these are not your average linens from your everyday department store. Take the pillowcases for example, these are a pair of damask stripe pillowcases available in ivory or ecru. Envelope-style opening. 100% organic cotton with a sateen finish. Like I said, luxe.

Thank you Monarch Monograms!

Porch Update

Ben and I made good progress on the porch upgrade this weekend.

1) We dug out a stump and replanted one section of the landscaping.

2) We removed the screen door and prepped and caulked the main door for painting.

3) We picked up the paint (a lovely shade of green) for the main door. Plus white for the trim.
4) My gardening guru friend Linda helped me pick out flowers for the pots. I've decided to go with all reds this year.

Today, my plan is to order the doorbell, the mailbox, and the house number:

Although I'm still considering these house numbers from Design Within Reach. But I'm wanting something big, and the first option is definitely bigger. Hmmm.

Hopefully I'll be ready to share pictures of the finished porch next week. But I'm not making any promises.

One Last Thought — by Guest Mom Amy M

At the end of a week where I feel utterly grateful for this opportunity I thought I would share with you a very beautiful and powerful quote my husband sent to me recently. It's from a book call Voyage.

"In the worship of security we fling our lives beneath the wheels of routine...we are brainwashed by obedience to 'them' until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of weak relationships, bland hobbies, and empty time-fillers that divert our attention from the sheer idiocy of the charade. The years thunder by. The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked on the shelves of patience. Before we know it the tomb is sealed...When you consider the beauty there is in the world, the rapture that can be known, the honest relationships, the excitement and exaltation there is for the taking...the real things to look at and feel and read...Where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be, quiet bondage, or hard fought freedom?"

Not sure that there is anything more I could add that would make this quote any more powerful. All of us have dreams. Desires. Needs. Wants. The most beautiful thing about life is possibility. We can DO anything, but it is up to us to make it happen. I love the last sentence " Which shall it be, quiet bondage, or hard fought freedom?" Though it is not easy, and I fight against it a lot, I truly would rather fight for the life I want then lay silent and let life pass me by.

LIVE YOUR LIFE!

Thank you Gabrielle for giving me this opportunity and thank you for being with me this week. It's been a pleasure.

Porch Remodel

My sister-in-law Liz, linked to an article from Blueprint about remaking your porch. The article was especially timely for me because I just talked my landlord into removing and replacing the way-way-overgrown-shrubs in our front yard, and I'm working on a porch spruce-up myself.

In fact, that was why I went to Ikea this morning. I was looking for containers for flowers and a new light fixture. Also in the plan: removing the screen door and giving the main door a fresh coat of paint. (Will it be yellow? Will it be turquoise? Maybe green?) And a new house number, of course.

The article thinks this is a one-weekend kind of project, but I have my doubts.

Note to self: Ikea opens at 10:00am, not 9:00.

I've got some great posts for today — including another excellent one from Amy M, our guest mom — but I've got to run to Ikea this morning. It's been almost a year since I've made an Ikea trip and I am very much looking forward to it.

So please check back this afternoon, when I'll have today's posts up.

Making a Blog Banner — by Guest Mom Amy M

I posted this on my blog a month or so ago, but I got such a response from it I wanted to share it here as well. I know this is a lot of information, it took me a long time to put together, so just take it step by step and email me with any questions. Oh and I have been over this numerous times, but please forgive any typos as I'm sure I've missed some.

I'm using Photoshop CS2, but this would work the exact same for other versions of the software or PS elements. I am sure you could do similar things in other image editing programs, but I'm not as familiar with them so I can't help you there. Also I am using the Windows version of PS so will add the mac commands as I know them.

Step one - New Document
In PS go to File/New or ctrl N (cmd N for mac ) and a pop-up menu (shown below) will open that will ask you to put in the appropriate info.

I've highlighted the changes you need to make. Most of your blogs are 660px wide, but you can change that number to whatever you want. I use 800px because the content of my blog is 800px wide. Height can also be changed to your preference, but I tend to always do around 250-275px, depending on what I'm doing. Make sure the resolution is set at 72px, which is best for web graphics. Also check that the color mode is set to RGB color.

click OK.

Step two - Add photo
You now have a blank canvas to design however you choose. I almost always use a photo so that is what I will show you.

First you need to open a photo by clicking file/open or ctrl O (cmd O for mac). Then you need to resize the photo you just opened by going to image/image size or ctrl+alt I ( cmd+opt I for mac). A menu box appears (shown below) and I have highlighted the info that you need to change.

First off make sure resample image has a check by it and that the resolution is set at 72 pixels/inch. Then change the width of the image under pixel dimensions to the width of your banner, so that would be 660px if you are following me from above. The height will automatically change.

Click OK. The photo will now appear smaller.

Step Three - Moving image
Now you want to move the image you just resized into the blank banner document.

Do this by clicking the move tool or V. I have it circled above shown in the tool window. It is an arrow with what looks to be a + sign next to it. Next click on the image you just resized and while pushing the mouse button move cursor into the new banner document. Release finger. You should now see the photo in the banner. Next, using the same technique, move the image around until it is lined up where you want it to be.

Step Four - Add the finishing touches
This is where it gets a bit tricky and I would encourage you to get to know the PS program. This is your chance to design the banner however you choose. Making it yours. If you want to add text click on the T in the tools window (circled below). Next, click on the banner and type in the text. You can change font and size in the tool bar (circled below). You can also change color by double clicking on the white box in the tool window and picking what ever color you want from the pop-up menu.

Step Five - Saving file
To save file click File/Save As or Ctlr+shift S (cmd+shift S for mac). Make sure the file is saved as jpeg and not a psd. Save it to what ever folder you would like, preferably one you will remember (i save all mine to the same Web folder)

click ok.

Step Six - Upload to host site
You are now ready to get your banner hosted. We are lucky these days there are many sites that 0ffer to host your photos for free like Photobucket or you could also use Smugmug, however this one is not free. At any rate if you have an account to a web hosting site great, if not sign up for an one. Since I can't tell you how to navigate each site just follow the instructions on the web site to upload photos. It should be very easy and self explanatory. If you are still confused email me.

Keep in mind if you are using the new blogger template or page elements (described below) you do not have to host your banner. You can skip this step.

Step Seven - Add banner to blog
This has two different parts depending if you have the old template or the new upgraded template. Keep in mind you can still have the new blogger, but have the old template. You will know if you have the upgraded template if you change the look of your blog by customizing your template with page elements. Another indication is on your dashboard it will say Manage: posts, settings, layout (instead of template). Just so you are aware if you are using the new template your banner will have the blogger header around it like on Victoria's blog. There is no way I know around it.

For the Old Template
1. Go to your Dashboard, click template. Then look for this block of codes in the template:

It may look slightly different depending on your template design, but it should start with blog header and end with div. Disregard the red type

Next Replace that entire code with this code below...don't worry about screwing up as long as you don't hit save template you can always go back.

Next you need to get the url code of your banner from your host site and replace it with "your url here" that is in red. In smugmug it's as easy as rt clicking (ctrl click on mac) on the photo, click properties, and copy & paste the url. In photobucket it will be the code next to URL link under the photo.

Once you have replace the url click preview to make sure it looks the way you want and then save template.

Instructions for upgraded template
1. In your dashboard click Layout t hen click edit html. Next look for this block of codes in the template:

Change maxwidgets='1' to maxwidgets=' 4' and change showaddelement='no' to showaddelement=' yes'. Click save template. Then click Page element tab to go back to layout. You will see an extra Add a Page Element above the Header.

Next click Add a Page Element and a pop-up will appear. Select Picture and click Add to blog . Another pop-up will appear that wants you to configure your image. It is best to leave the title blank. If you want a caption below the image, then fill it in your caption, otherwise leave it blank. If you have your photo stored on your computer, click Browse, then select the photo from your computer. If you want Blogger to size the image to fit into your header, then check the Shrink to fit (default). If you want the image to be exactly the size of your original image, then uncheck shink to fit. Click Save changes

If your photo is already hosted on the web ie photobucket or smugmug, then check From the web and type in the URL of the photo, and then click Save changes.

Of course always make sure to preview blog before making changes. If you don't like it you can always delete the page element and start again.

Good Luck and please let me know if you have any questions.

Finger Magic Origami

I believe I've mentioned before that I've found origami to be a good way to keep my daughter Maude's able hands busy. So when Cindy from Finger Magic Origami sent me a link to her site, I did a little exploring. In addition to being a great little online shop that sells all things origami, the site is also an excellent resource for origami instructions (including videos). But what I especially liked is the lifestyle section of the site.

See photos of origami camping and having tea in the quirky Origami Adventures section. And don't miss O is for Origami, where Cindy photographs the alphabet as seen in the world around her.

By the way, this is a lovely pasttime for kids — spotting hidden alphabets out there in the world — sort of a more challenging "I Spy" game. (I'm not totally sure of the relationship between this activity and origami, but don't mind, because I think hidden alphabets are great.)

Book of the Week: The Dangerous Book for Boys

Just in time for today's book of the week, my brother Jared (a really wonderful uncle and sometime guest blogger here) gave my son Ralph
The Dangerous Book for Boys by Conn and Hall Iggulden. I had never heard of it before, but I was a believer based on the cover and heft of the volume alone. It's a beautifully put together book.

And then, I looked inside and I wasn't just sold, I was converted. It's packed full of all the information that should fill your son's head. Bits of Trivia about the world. Information on famous battles. Adventure stories of men who trekked to Antartica. The most important knots to know. Remember the Great Brain books? Well, the Great Brain, a real boy's boy, would have known all this stuff.

Ralph sat down with it and just started eating it up. "Look Mom, all the different pirate flags. Wow, there's way more than I thought. Look Mom, the 7 wonders of the world. Hey! We've seen one! Look mMom, check out this shot of the Great Wall of China. It's awesome!" And it's not just an afternoon read. It's a big, thick book. I can imagine Ralph studying it all summer long and then some and then some.

There's a really lovely interview with one of the authors on Amazon here (scroll down) where he talks about why he wrote the book and his view that the world is hurting boys by sheltering them too much. If you have a son, a nephew, or a boy who lives nearby in the 8 or older range, do get them this book — it's a treat just to have it in the house.

I would also suggest it as a perfect gift for any man about to become a father to a son. Even though he won't be able to use the book with his son for many years, I can't imagine a better way to get him excited to be a dad. This book will give him the vision of an ideal childhood that he had, wanted, or will want for his own son.

You can find it
here.

Embellish Your Glassware

These
glass sticks by Blik are so smart. On glassware, on a carafe. This is the kind of project that could keep children's hands busy during last minute preparations for a dinner party: Hey kids, why don't you and your guests put these polka dots all over the water glasses, while I frost the cake and visit with their mom. . .

Nice find Hostess with the Mostess!

What do to with your favorite photos — by Guest Mom Amy M

Being a photographer is one of the things I love most. Catching the details of my life has become something I can't live without. I enjoy looking through each photograph and savoring each memory that is tied to it, but I am always faced with the tough question, what should I do with my photos now?

Here are some of my favorite ideas.

Since I really enjoy scrapbooking my photos are most often then not used for that purpose, but then they are stuck in albums and not seen very often (if they get scrapbooked at all which seems to be the case as of late), so something I've done is frame the layouts so they can be enjoyed by all.

Another great idea is to hang a shelf and do a collage of frame photos.

Or instead of using a shelf you could put them in a very pleasing arrangement (9x9in frames from IKEA). Go here for more awesome ideas on arrangements and shelves.

This just happens to be one of my favorite ways to display your photos, perhaps because it's a creative way.

Creating an accordion photo box (click here for more photos). I made this to go in my daughter's room on her photo shelf. It happens to be 4x4, but it can be any size you like. It's enjoyable to make and super easy. Here are the instructions from my blog if you're interested in making one.

Hopefully this has given you some ideas on how to get your favorite photos incorporated into your home.

Chao,
Amy

Junior Society

I just realized I've been remiss in not making sure Design Mom Readers are aware of the really excellent blog being authored by Robert Mahar of Mahar Dry Goods.

If you've been reading for a while, you already know I'm so impressed with the collection of hand-crafted and artisan goods that Mahar Dry Goods has put together. And I'm equally as impressed with the Junior Society Blog.

Not only does Mr. Mahar have an eye for quality products, he also clearly knows a good illustrator when he sees one. The illustrations throughout the Junior Society are by S. Britt, and they make the already good blog content doubly charming.

Definitely one of my favorite new sites.

My Crescer Article is out Today!

Awhile back I mentioned meeting up with Paula, the Editor-in-Chief for Crescer, the big parenting magazine in Brazil, where she asked me to write an article. Well the issue with my article came out today. (Hooray!)

I can't believe I have a byline.
I can't wait to get my hands on a hard copy. My kids are going to think they're famous. Since I don't read Portuguese, I'm going to need to look up the essay I sent over and remind myself what I wrote — I hope it was good.

And a huge thank you to Jeff Taylor for taking the family picture. I was imagining they were requesting the photo for a little spot on the "Contributors" page, but clearly, when they saw Jeff's amazing shot, they felt it was feature worthy. Thanks, Jeff! (It's so great to see a portrait of the Blairs without a single family member picking their nose.)

Ask Design Mom: Simple Doormats

Ask-Design-Mom Question:
We live in a New York apartment building. We've been living here for almost 2 years and still don't have a "welcome" mat at the front door because I haven't found anything I like. I don't want anything too cutesy, or to say welcome even. Just nice and clean. I don't like any of the ones at bed bath and beyond and I'm not sure where else to look. Help! Thanks, Sarah

Design Mom Answer:
We have so much mud being tracked through the house these days (April showers and all) that doormats are on my mind as well, Sarah. Thank you for the great question. Here are some of the doormats I'm looking at:

This simple rubber lattice doormat from Smith & Hawken.

This metal/bristle doormat from Conran Shop (which is sadly out of stock, but I'm crossing my fingers they'll get a new shipment soon).

The Garden Gate doormat from Crate & Barrel. Not necessarily "simple" but I love the pattern and contrast.

The Teak doormat from Gardener's Supply Company.

And my all-time favorite, the Mando Door Mat from Ikea. We have owned this mat at two different homes and I still find it highly appealing. So simple and so interesting at the same time. The red circle makes it feel Japanesey.

Design Mom Readers, where do you find great doormats?

Time For You — by Guest Mom Amy M

I always wanted to be a mother, but never understood how tough it really would be. It's been 7 years now that I've felt the emotional toll as I worry about each one, not to mention the physical exhaustion that parenting requires. It has taken me time to get used to this new role: mother, wife, chef, maid, driver, etc. And unfortunately, it's not something that someone could teach me or even warn me about, I needed to experience and figure it out for yourself.

Motherhood takes a lot out you. Amidst all the chaos and all the things that have to get done during a day it's so easy to loose sight of one significant person in your life...YOU. Sometimes, we are so concerned with what is going on with everyone else in our life we forget about us. Now I'm not suggesting it's not important to focus on others, service is a beautiful way to lift your spirits, but it's really hard to focus on others when we're doing it with our "spiritual buckets" constantly empty. It works for a while, but eventually we crumble. At least that's what happens to me, I get angry and resent that I have to do any of it. Not so good.

So this year I decided I needed to give back to myself and what better way to do that than by being creative — something I love/need. Each week, no matter what else I have to do, I make sure I set aside some time to do a creative project. It could be for me, it could be for someone else, it could be big, or small, I don't care as long as I am filling up my bucket.
Wow. What a difference it has made to me in my interaction with those around me. It gives me a sense of accomplishment that I just can't get from folding laundry. It fills me up and I feel able to give more. Here are a few of the projects I have worked on this year thus far.

Cleaning my studio desk (I could probably do this one every week)

Covering and decorating a pre-made book (journal for my daughter)

Decorating a plain vase

Refurbishing an old piece of furniture to fit my needs (this is for my embellishments)

Making thank you cards

Making gifts (personalized onesie)

Scrapbooking one page or many

Adding color to my favorite accessory (sewing ribbon to my camera strap)

Whether you like to be creative, read a book, exercise, or bake, make sure you do something for you to replenish your spirit so you are better able to give all you can to those you love.

Have a fabulous Tuesday.

Summer Wardrobe Boost

Late Saturday night I was picking up little girl tights and milk and various other bits and pieces at Target when I spotted this dress and picked it up as well. I wore it Sunday to church and decided it's my new favorite dress.

The picture as it stands on the website shows no details, so I'm showing it faded-out as well to make them appear. But ignore the picture and just trust me: it's so very cute. Little flutter sleeves and tuxedo styling on the back. Empire waist. The cut is extremely flattering. And come on, you can't beat $25 — or buying milk and fashion at the same time.

Go see it in person. And then buy one. And we can all be matching this summer. It'll be great.

FYI: It's cut small, so I suggest taking the next size up.
